EMET FUN CORNER!
~ ~ ~ EMET ~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~ FUN ~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~ CORNER ~ ~ ~
In my latest post, the duplicate is reading a list of entries in the book’s table of contents. There’s a hidden puzzle here! All but one of the entries have something in common. They’re all veiled callbacks to the Deceased ORPs board. Each entry is inspired by the name of a deceased RP, reimagined with a tinge of horror!!!!! There’s just one that isn’t. Instead, that’s a reference to a published story, probably my favorite work of contemporary short horror. The name of the entry isn’t the name of the story itself, but the entry name appears verbatim within the story, so a google search will pull it up. Important: The story’s NSFW, or for life, really. It hinges on an incredibly creative and memorable horror concept, but it takes a pretty committed expedition into the realm of sensual evil to get everything in place for that concept to work. So… you’ve been warned. However, the story seems like an absolutely dead-on tonal match for Orville Giguere and his hedonistic philosophy; I recall his words, “A true delicacy is something that is genuinely rare, something that only you or those you decide to share it with would ever get to experience.” That’s what made me excited to sneak a shout-out to that story into Emet. So, happy hunting! Or just go the easy route and google each of the entry names, I don’t give a shit if you want to be lazy. EMET!!!

It is distressing how much of Prime this Brogue is about to read. No wonder you referred to it as "dipping his toe into something serious".

Yeah there were a few more that didn't make the cut, Sky Towers and Blood among them. Others I couldn't quite whip into the right shape included The Nightside, All Strings Attached, and Currents of the Soul.
You have a point about Prime, but honestly, I'm more impressed than anything about how naturally his RPs inspired titles in the proper mood. Thanks Prime.
Good sleuthing. You're right about all of them so far. (And I don't know what "The Visitor at the Falling Sun" is supposed to mean but I LOVE THAT TITLE. It's gonna have to happen.)

Are these actually then meant to be call-backs or call aheads to things that have had/or will happen in ORP, then? Also, "The Visitor at the Falling Sun" would be a great title for Shadowplay, if we ever feel like doing the Vieve/Rhometer/Didn't/Rhys topic.

Oh, definitely not, it was just a much more fun way to generate titles than making them up off the top of my head, and I figured someone (you) would appreciate the mental exercise. This book isn't some chronicle of lost ORP history.

Yeah, Prime does have a few knacks that I have to give him; among the greatest of which is a knack for really cool titles (though there are a few stinkers in there, like "Fell From Heaven" and "The R&D Sucks!" or whatever those were called.
When it comes to titling things, I have to be careful- I love to experiment with things, but a good title catches interest, and is succinct enough that it's easy to mention and have people remember it. I have too much of tendency to use / in my titles; Moss/Moth/Maude/Maul, Rainbow/Shortbow/Mindblown, and Antibibble initially was supposed to be "Making Ashes/Rigorous Therapy/Your Truth", though that needs some reworking. Emet makes me happy because it vaguely foreshadows the critical point in the plot, but Proboards can't really handle the coding for it.
Triannual is interesting, because it's a callback to the fact that Natalie was running into Nachoset again, three years after their first clash, but it never got called out as such. Tragically, LTR was cut off before we could hit the "train goes over Africa, and Nachoset decides to attack it and go after Natalie" portion that I'd been hoping to do.
Flint and Steel and Chips are Down are titles I'm not particularly proud of; both were whipped up in minutes on the fly. Chips are Down may get retitled; I'm still debating on that front.
Quenching the Ucalegon and Nomenclature of the Pococurante are teases. I hope people will click them just because they're too lazy to google the big words, and want to find out what they mean.

Yes haha yes but have you solved Emet Fun Corner yet
"Chips are Down" doesn't have an obscure enough word in it. "Numismatic Parlay" sounds more Lee-ish.

I solved it; but I am leaving the final tumbler in the lock unturned. There are quite a few individuals here who I believe would be very unsettled by reading the work, to the point of losing sleep. So I'll not reveal which one of these works is the hint to find that story.
As a fun little easter egg, Giguere actually considers rolling out SCP-604 (well, the description of SCP 604 from when Emet was first written) when the diners are being seated, but dismisses it. Ironically, even in spite of this, one of his guests conjures up a human heart for consumption.
Also, Choobs, are you game to post in this round with Julia/Charlie, or should I move us along?

I just couldn't stand the thought that you might've left the job unfinished after having done such a good job so far.

I've already suggested "Evening Harmony" as a Giguere theme, and the whole album Flowers of Evil is some worrisomely appropriate background music for Emet, especially "The Irremediable". An idea; a form; a being, parted from the azure and fallen into the slough of some leaden Styx where no eye of heaven can penetrate. An angel (rash wanderer) tempted by the love of ugliness, lashing out like a swimmer in the depths of a huge nightmare, And struggling - O fierce anguish! - against a gigantic undertow which goes singing like a horde of madmen and pirouetting in the gloom. An unfortunate man groping futilely, seeking the light and the key to escape from a hole full of reptiles. A damned man descending endless bannisterless stairs, going lampless down the brink of a pit whose stench betrays its watery depths, Where slimy monsters glare with great phosphorescent eyes that deepen the darkness of the night and make nothing but themselves visible. A ship held in a crystal trap, ice-bound at the pole, seeking fatal passage by which it reached that prison. All these are clear emblems - perfect pictures of an unchangeable fate. They make us think that whatever he does, the devil does well.Eerily, this post presaged a few of those elements, especially the detail of "bannisterless stairs", long before I had ever encountered the album or Baudelaire's book of poetry from which it draws. Also Ruth White's translation includes the word "azure", so there you go.
