New monthly feature idea. I will be running it. Every month, someone picks an adjective. We will all work together to nominate up to thirty-five characters (the maximum number of choices in Proboards polls) whom we think meet that adjective's criteria. We are searching for the forum's Ten ___est Characters -- Funniest Characters, Sexiest Characters, Most Evil Characters, etc. Once thirty-five nominations are secure or it's getting late in the month, I create a poll. VOTING HAPPENS. And then the results are revealed, and I endeavor to write some kind of (maybe humorous?????????) list-style article running down the top 10 characters and examining why they are so funny/sexy/evil/etc. COULDN'T BE SIMPLER! There are just a couple more things to say: Each person is allowed to nominate up to five characters per round. Which means seven dedicated contributors could hog all the noms and leave no room for the little guy. But this is okay because judging from the Sporcle quiz results I am guessing that most of you can't name more than five RP characters off the top of your heads anyway, you barnacles. You don't have to only nominate your own characters. Nor only nominate other peoples' characters. Mix 'em up! That is what I'm about to do. Characters from every setting are permitted, including Aleta and Househeld. Whoever is the writer of the winning character each round gets to choose the adjective for next round. By which I really mean, they get to suggest the adjective, and then I have ultimate tyrant fascist communist veto power. You can choose something from this list maybe! It has most of the big ones on it. Or else pick a personal favorite indie adjective without much mainstream exposure. That's cool too. For our first round, this month of August '12, I will choose............................ MANLY MASCULINE - VIRILE - STRONG Which means of course that we are looking to establish THE 10 MANLIEST CHARACTERS IN RP I will start us off with five nominations. RANCE HUCKABEE WILLIAMS MARSHALL and RIE Now I just need up to thirty more nominations. DO YOUR WORST. Let us figure out who is the manliest Once And For All.

Sarcasm in this feature is going to be unavoidable. But when it actually comes to polling time, everyone will be allowed to vote for ten characters, not just one or a few, so I trust that thoughtful opinion will have the lead at the end of the day.
Manly noms so far: 12/35

A lot of the ones I wanted to nominom have already been nominated so yeah. I was tempted to throw out Mandelbrot but Mandelbrot isn't actually that manly when I stopped to think about it.

Even though I can't nominate any more by my own rules, I can certainly suggest a few more characters, and anyone who isn't Biscuit, Elliot or myself can nominate them...
Prime Kuro Price Sarosin Narita Kalim
David Hadley (Emet) Dom (Past Whitefall) General Higgens (Past Whitefall) Mark Rohr
Any takers?

I'm going to up the nomination limit. Instead of five noms per member, let's allow seven.
I'll add Kuro and Prime to the list, and Elliot, Biscuit and Ninety can each add an extra two noms if they want to. There are still some unclaimed potential-nominees in this thread, and surely a fair few more I haven't thought of.
26/35 manly noms.

I'm going to give Noms, AND justify my reasoning, because I'm cool like that. (And because I know it will compel Pohatu to do likewise, as he must always go the extra mile)
-HECTOR CRUZ: Virile works, as does masculine and strong. He's not gentlemanly, but his brash, raw Id driven lifestyle is certainly a very specific variety of manly. Also, Loogs says it's canon that he's stupidly hung, so there is that, I suppose...
-TARAEK: So angry, so reliable, so protective. Even though he might not be a hu-Man, that dinosaur exemplifies a lot of the best attributes of manliness. He might get points off for not being fully evolved, but dangit, I think he deserves a chance to shine here.
-ZEBEDEE TAYLOR: Quite possibly the closest to a "Gentleman" to make it onto the list. He's not as coarse or surly as a lot of the other candidates, instead embodying a more chivalrous and reserved side of manliness. He's the Atticus Finch to the more typical Don Draper and Conan the Barbarian types we have here.
-NICK TAURIC: Though kinda bland initially, his revision in voice in Luxury Train Ride gives him a great 1900's scientist-adventurer vibe. He should engineer himself a handlebar mustache.
Speaking of Mustaches: -ORVILLE GIGUERE: Say what you will about him being a fat-cat sybarite, but the man has a lot of things going for him. He's got the best mustache this side of Renard (who I think disqualifies himself by virtue of not being able to stab anything), a certain refinement and culture (even if not that espoused by the typical members of high society), and sees nothing wrong with tearing out somebody's heart and eating it. He hits the key points of manly looks, dignity, and savagery that makes him quite the contender.
-REBA WINSET: Reba is a different kind of "manly" from Natalie and Rie. They are rugged in spite of their femininity, whereas Reba actually aggressively pursues a manly angle on situations as her natural preference. Hopefully, I can do something to persuade you all of this before too long...
RANCE HUCKABEE WILLIAMS MARSHALL RIE JONAS LUCAS SCAR CESARE STAVROS DEMETRIOS KOSMETATOS MICKEY SHARPE SYLVIA NATALIE ULIMA GEORGE BUCKLAND VALON LORSHA VOLKNER I KETUT TOPAN MIKO ALGERNON BRECK WALLACE CREED DAVID HADLEY MARK ROHR RICK DOM ELLIOT GENERAL HIGGENS PRIME KURO HECTOR CRUZ TARAEK ZEBEDEE ORVILLE GIGUERE NICK TAURIC REBA WINSET 32/35 MANLY NOMS

(And because I know it will compel Pohatu to do likewise, as he must always go the extra mile) Ah, you may have missed the part where I have to type up a Cracked-style list running down the winners after the poll closes. I have to justify everyone else's reasoning! Nevertheless, thanks for the thoughtful noms. I tossed in a few more of those I suggested earlier, just to boost this to 35 since it's already the nineteenth. Poll starts straightaway.

All right, October has begun and it's high time for a new leaderboard contest. As the winner from last round, Biscuit had the privilege to choose our attribute this month, and he chose nothing more or less than the most appropriate adjective this time of the year: SCARY FRIGHTENING - ABSURD - UGLY So we are looking to find THE 10 SCARIEST CHARACTERS IN RP Biscuit had four early nominations to suggest, and can make three more any time he feels like it. MANDELBROT DINH QUINTS BLACKBIRD and LUCAS I, too, have some noms of my own to offer. SCAR VOLKNER AGENT PIKE KALIM SHOUTA BASILISK and DR. SEVERSTAL That's eleven so far. We can fill up the poll with up to twenty-four more, so let's hop to it! Who in RP gives you the heebie-jeebies something terrible?? SPEAK NOW OR FOREVER LOSE YOUR TONGUE. That's right. You lose it if you don't speak. Ghosts come and take it. oooOOOOoooOOOOOOoooooo

If that becomes annoying, I will appoint myself new legislative tyrant banana republic Hitler powers to reject nominations. It's cool to enter her in Scariest because she is a friggin' unnerving bitch, but no, let's not develop a cadre of characters who get nominated every single round.
14/35 scary noms. Biscuit can make three more noms if he wants to; Blood, Elliot and Choobs can make six more each.

i don't see a problem with someone being nominated each round so long as they are barred from winning every round--so like a rule being put in place that someone who has won cannot be nommed in the next round makes sense

So Rie, Scar, and Huckabee would be retroactively banned from this poll?
But that's still easy to spam as long as the character never wins anything. Like, Lee could just spam I Ketut Topan, and it's not like we're ever gonna vote for him for anything because seriously who the frig is that guy, and it'd be a waste of a poll slot. Anyway, I feel like Rie, Scar, and Huckabee all actually do merit consideration as scary characters as well as manly, and it'd feel artificial to exclude them.
Let's just take it on a case-by-case basis... If someone spams a character in rounds with adjectives where they really don't belong, not even for sarcastic lulz, I'll just tell 'em to knock it off.

You could impose a winner's handicap of like -1 or -3, so that for someone to win twice they'd have to win by a wider margin.
|
|
|
Post by {WW}BetaBloodWolf7 on Oct 2, 2012 1:38:30 GMT -5
So what if a character can win multiple times in a row? Doesn't that just show how much we think of that character? I want to see who the Exodus thinks is the scariest character! Not see who COULD have been if we had allowed that character to take part. This isn't a game, so a handicap isn't necessary. It's a vote.
If you're concerned that one person will constantly get to dominate the adjectives, then just make it so that someone can't get the adjective twice in a row.
