Figured I'd start a separate thread for this so the registration topic doesn't get cluttered and potential new characters don't get lost in a mess of other posts.
Since I don't remember any other topic getting so many in-character (and frankly, really rather good) posts in such a short time (I don't even think OT, Ish or Bollougne got so many so quickly?), why not start a discussion thread about what's happened so far etc etc etc
Here's my observations so far:
No one apart from Garth and Thyra has mentioned any connections to existing characters. I just think it's kinda cool tbh, it feels like a completely blank slate for everyone which is awesome. I anticipate some of the characters have links to pre-existing characters (I know Mel from my cast has links to Helen that me and Lee have been discussing) but at the moment it feels like there's a lot of potential for everyone's high-schoolers.
The actual skirmishes between my cast and everyone else's characters are super interesting to me. What I've actually found most interesting is the retaliation from my cast's pranks - Mel makes Ty's drink go cold so he responds by (essentially) chucking his drink over their heads. What's interesting to me is that Mel and co aren't directly pranking anyone, they're messing with the environment around the other characters but both Ty and Talia responded with direct attacks on my cast. I'm digging the escalation of the retaliation, especially with the fact that Talia responded to criticism on her outfit rather than an outright prank or attack.
Thyra's thought process - what school would ever employ someone who embodies a caricature of evil like Silumas? I'm looking forward to where that one goes.
Love Garth's concern about escalating the prank war. I've never really thought at great length about what the general populace of the Archipelago might think about Powers as a whole, outside of Ecruteak and OT, and a very vague summary in Antibibble.
Who else thinks Pohatu's looking to pull a Florifious on Deandre's power?

Who else thinks Pohatu's looking to pull a Florifious on Deandre's power? Ahaha. Deandre's power isn't about words specifically but as I worked out how it would affect his personality, yeah, he started pulling in an Esther-like direction. I see her as college-aged, otherwise I would've considered throwing her in here too. They would be stress buddies, that's for sure. EDIT: The more I think about it... Esther as TA? It might happen. Got to agree about Silumas appearing so obviously evil that it's hard to see how he got the job. But then I guess that's what they all said about Snape

The funny thing is, my post actually was going to have Garth and Thyra discussing her choice to hire Silumas at length, but I realized that it'd be better to leave it hanging for now, and instead revisit it towards the end of the plot. After all, Thyra's possibly the most wholesome and compassionate character in ORP and Silumas... Is not so much, so there's got to be something going on there. As for actual structure, to avoid Luxury Train Ride problems, I'm planning on making each topic represent an individual day. So this thread will be the orientation, whereas another might be the first night with everybody in the dorms, and another will deal with a field trip or such. As for what's going on in this topic, I'm going to give us a few more days, and then have Thyra take the reins. Likely I'll have every character introduce themselves to the class and demonstrate their power (if it *can* be demonstrated. Dalisay and Deandre seem to have powers that are more instinctive than voluntary?), and then Thyra will have a brief orientation, and then I'm thinking we might have the students each get some one-on-one time with a teacher of their choosing, kinda a teacher-student conference. My one big concern presently is that DL and Merc's characters have VERY open ended powers. So far they've been mostly reining them in, but I have PPSD (Post-Prime Stress Disorder), which admittedly makes me cautious about open-ended powers with a lot of potential in a fairly low level RP. We'll see how this goes, though; after all, I'd say this plotline is hardly combat oriented, and they both seem to have a handle on things. I've gotta give El props for the clique; I can't think of the last time I saw a highschool plot where the bitchy popular clique was actually likable and sympathetic, instead of some vague nasty cipher that served as a hate sink. El's been playing a real delicate balance, and I'd almost say writing a group as "cool and likable, but somewhat distasteful and cliquey" is a much more demanding writing task than most any other antagonist role. Deandre and Didn't should date. Not because they're black, but because with their powers, I'm not entirely sure the readers would ever actually know what happened. (As is, digging his voice. He's got this intriguing, dreamlike, wavery voice that kinda segues in and out of reality with just a touch of dream logic, which is pretty dang unique!) (As a final note, when I saw Pohatu had a character named Deandre (which I'm sure is actually just coincidence), I considered making a character with the same transposition of characters in his first name. But then I realized the character would be named "Endrwe", and I mean, who names a character something dumb like Ender?)

I'm glad about the one-on-one time suggestion because that's exactly what I was hoping to do at some point. Got plans to write a scene between Deandre and someone who isn't exactly a teacher, but a sort of academic/personal counselor, maybe.
Totally agreed about Elliot's characters. They do give off the vibe, but there was such an honest commitment to the integrity and perspective of Carlos and Jay in particular right off the bat that they have my unquestioned sympathy.

I'm actually really loving Deandre - I'm a big fan of the sort of, stream of consciousness style of writing, and the random note he wrote about the waitress is actually adorable. He's the sort of character you just kinda want to hug and tell them it'll all be okay.

No need to worry about Ty, he's pretty much shown all his cards thus far and broadcasted one of his major weaknesses for those who choose to pick up on it.

insert code here //** Typing from my phone so mistakes and incomplete sentences can be expected.
Lee and I have not fully discussed Silumas involvement and how he came to teach. But, I will promise you this: he doesn't plan on executing students that behave badly...at least not without a resurrection. ;P
Seriously though, Silumas isn't necessarily changed, but killing random humans does not even rank on his priority list.

Can we get a name for the main administrative hub building on campus? In my experience, this could easily just be something generic like the "Academy Center", but it could be named after someone too. "Osmund Hall"? "Helmholtz Center"? "Greymartin Hall"? I'm just pulling out more Pokemon nicknames.
(Note: I'm not necessarily saying that's the building they're in right now. In fact, I assume it isn't.)

All I can really say about Talia is that she hasn't come anywhere close to showing all of her cards yet, but then seeing as how she only came into her powers around 2-3 years ago, she may not even know what all of her cards are yet.
She's put a lot of effort into keeping her anger in check because she knows it makes her lose control and her powers can be extremely destructive and have on one occasion proven deadly. This haunts her deeply and is one of the reasons she reins them in for the most part. However the entire reason her mother enrolled her is because her powers only seem to be getting stronger and her control issues only seem to be worsening. For all we know she could be a ticking time bomb.

Not going to say anything specific, but I will mention I talked with Clicker about the school RP today. Also, Pohatu, can you PM me about your character's power? Cendra has an idea for a character, but I want to verify her power isn't the same as Deandre. As for prior posts here: The campus is all one connected, horseshoe shaped building. I'm debating if I want it facing inwards or outwards, but leaning towards the school proper being on the seaward sides, with separate girl's and boy's dorms on either side. The principal's office complex is probably just called as such, though the dorms might have fancy names. I' m thinking Terminer Hall for the boys, and I'm not sure for the girls, yet. Problem is "Yardic Hall" or "Kimoned Memorial Hall" don't sound great, and "Russell Hall" just sounds conceited. Ah, I hadn't realized how dangerous Talia is. That actually makes her a much more ominous character, and it's interesting to see which ways the school will push her.

Just one building? Oh, that's a shame, but I guess it's easier to design. Still, in a school for powers, you'd think at the least that class facilities would be separate buildings from non-classroom facilities, for safety's sake.

That is true... Maybe I'll actually go with an H shaped design, with the buildings separate, but fairly close (no more than a 30 foot walk). I think that actually sounds best to me, in retrospect. Hmmm...

Kinda! Garth... um, well... Uh...
(Silumas, please don't kill Garth. Pleeeeaaase?)
Elliot, do you mind keeping your crew on the bleachers til my next post? If you could, that'd be great (if you've already finished that post you were talking about, I understand. If that's the case, I'll work around it.)

“Ohhh, you clever dog you. Of course, you presumed I'd think you were one of the students, put me through my paces, and see where I stood on you before classes even started. And I doubt you got hired here without knowing Natalie, so you're either trying to cover your tracks, or you want me to embarrass myself by saying something stupid about her. Nice prank, but you've gotta try harder than that to get me.” I'm confused. Who is Garth talking to there? He obviously wouldn't have mistaken either Thyra or Silumas for being enrolled in the school, they're both clearly adults. Unless I'm way off about Thyra's appearance.

The whisper was stated to be non-gendered and impossible to place, and Garth assumed Silumas was doing it to try and get him to talk about what he thought about Silumas. Imagine you were online one day when an anonymous person popped up and was like "So, what do you think of Lee?" I'm guessing you'd think it was me on a sock puppet.
And that's the assumption Garth made. Poor choice, but after all, he's spent the past few years palling around with Nopcsa and the like, so where he comes from, this is a valid call.

With the unconscious summoning of Fire and Death, which were Silumas' go-to elements for ridding himself of inconveniences, the auditorium found itself warming uncomfortably. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SILUMAS IS HEAD OF HOUSE VASHVAL, IT'S CONFIRMED

Now, Orientation is planned on being mainly just, well, the Orientation process; teachers and students get introduced, then a series of short one-on-one faculty student conferences to answer their questions.
I'm wondering what you guys would rather see for the next RP, so I can start planning details: -The first night in the dorms, with everybody jockeying for rooms -The first normal day of classes -The first field trip, which is going to be taking the class on a boat as it does a lap around the revamped Archipelago, describing the setting and giving the students a tour and chance for out of class antics.
I think the night in the dorms would be the most organic, but it also feels like there might not be quite enough meat there to handle a full plot or two. Then again, I could be wrong; the dynamics will shift a lot if we split the genders up, because each group has components from both sides, so it'll change things up a bit. I'm thinking if we did first night in the dorms, it might actually be two separate threads, one for boys, one for girls, for organization's sake. (Yes, I am as paranoid of a Luxury Train Ride situation arising as this sounds)

First night sounds appealing but I feel like we'd know better after another round or two whether there's enough there for an RP. Specifically, once Thyra gets to introductions.

Why not do the first night and the first day of classes together? We'd be able to explore dorms and then roll into the first classes directly from there.
