Berthold leaned back, looking through his newspaper. The city of Olivine had been totally trashed by a bunch of superpowered beings, and even some of them had been killed. That wasn't typical. Usually people lived through stuff like that, well, at least the superpowered ones did.
He folded it up, and shrugged. No need to trouble himself over any of these ordeals elsewhere. He only had his own everyday problems to deal with, that of a man with little work and plenty of expenses. He stepped back as a rugged biker walked by, and looked skyward at the bright new dawn as the sun rose.

Karine Nrutas was busy getting ready for work. The sun was rising and Karine looked out her window as she loaded up her purse with junk she needed. Cell phone, money, lip gloss, and some jewelry for afterwards were all thrown in.
The restauraunt she worked at had been damaged, but it was undergoing repairs. She always stayed after her shift to help the owner with repairs. She loved her job and the people who owned it were very kind, so she never failed to help out.
She left a note on the counter for her mom to find, as the rest of the family was still asleep. She had had to be at work early that morning. Karine walked out the door, grabbing her truck keys. She got in her truck, pushing in the clutch to start it. As she backed out of her driveway, she thought of what she would be doing today.
She finally got to the restauraunt. As she walked in, she noticed the man in the home across the restaurant stepping away from an intimidating-looking man on the sidewalk. She checked her watch. 15 minutes before her shift. She had some time to watch the people. Karine casually looked over, so the people wouldn't know she was looking at them.

The biker, stumbling cluelessly, leaned over then front counter of the restaraunt. "Hey, Miss pink stuff... Do you serve any alchohol at this fine establishment?" The man teetered, and wobbled, wavering slightly as he tried to focus on making his words clear. Berthold sighed audibly at his table, and stood up, pushing in his chair.
"Sir, please leave the women alone. You're looking for a bar, not a restaraunt." Berthold said, and tried to steer the man for the door.

"Um, no, we don't," Karine said uncomfortably, looking at Berthold gratefully for trying to get him out of the place.
"There's a bar, like, a mile down the road," She mentioned, hoping he wasn't driving.

"Okay. Thanks, Karine." The biker smiled stupidly, and tussled her hair a little. "I'll see you later, old friend." The man walked out the door, and the diners collectively sighed in relief. The man slowly puttered away on a scrap heap of a motorbike, leaving a trail of smoke behind him.
"He knows you?" Berthold asked, quizzical. In his distraction, he dropped his newspaper.

OOC: Same time postings... :/ This is BEFORE the biker leaves, not after.
BIC: "Yeah. I hate to see a pretty woman be harassed like that. If you do anything else to her, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to beat the living crap out of you."
Levi strode into the bar casually, straightening his corduroy beige newsboy hat, followed by Arhenius, who tried to cause as little damage as possible by taking care not to slam her long, tough metal spider legs into the ground. He pushed his glasses farther up the bridge of his nose, and patted a revolver that was in the holster on his hip. "Try not to get out of hand, buddy."
[EDIT]- *leers at you two for posting before me*

"Yes, I do know him from somewhere." Karine said, not sure if she should tell Berthold or not. It had been a very dramatic time in her life at that time, and she kind of liked to forget it.
But given that she was a very curious person, a people-watcher, something told her to follow him. As soon as her shift was over she would go to the bar and case the place. Just watching him from afar would be interesting. Besides, she could report the findings to her friends. She stayed in her daydream for about a minute when she focused back on Berthold.
"Can I help you with anything?" she asked. "Sorry to keep you waiting." Karine re-tied her ponytail and put her hat back on, having been tousled by the biker.

"Ah, I'm just looking for work." Berthold said, scooping up his newspaper and turning towards the classified ads. "I need to get a certain ammount of money, and then get a ticket for a plane to America. My father sealed away my inheritance, and I need to buy a key from a friend of his and then make my way to where the will is stowed in order to earn it. He wanted to make sure that I made something of myself after he passed away, and kinda forced me to. I really need that inheritance."
Berthold didn't know why, but he felt like he could say anything to Karine. She seemed to be the perfect listener, somebody who he could open up to. The other two that had just strode in also seemed reliable, though he didn't know how...

"Wow." Karine listened intently, leaning over the counter. It was a slow day today, and luckily, she was on counter duty. She thought about what Berthold had told her, analyzing the situation. Having to work for your inheritance was an interesting, yet ironic way of doing things, she thought. Karine had always assumed that inheritances were automatically given to their beneficiaries.
She thought out loud. "That's a really different way of doing things. I think it's kind of cool. You get to go on an entire adventure to America to get your fortune."
"So what exactly is the type of job you are looking for?" Karine asked, wanting to know out of curosity. But then she suddenly remembered the renovations that were being done. "You know, it just so happens that we were looking for help to renovate this place. If you're good with fixing stuff, the owner might just hire you. I have some extra applications in the back if you are interested."

"America? Sounds pretty awesome..." Levi took a seat on one of the stools, and eyed the menus taped to the wall. "What kind of stuff do you sell, anyway? Any particular specialties? I'm a sucker for Hispanic-style sandwiches..."
Arhenius took one look at the menus, and sighed deeply. "If only I could taste food..." She waved several curly, artificial locks of black hair out of her disappointed face, and tried to sit down on one of the stools. However, Levi stopped her before she could.
"Arhenius, don't. I don't wanna pay for another stool."

Berthold shrugged. "My old man always had me helping out in the shop to build all kinds of parts from blue prints, though he never did let me see what they did go to. I'm good at building things, and good at fixing them, so sure, I'll gladly work here." Berthold ran out to his car to grab a toolbox as Karine went back to check with her manager.
As he came back in, he gave an interested look at the mechanical complexity of Arhenius's legs. He certainly would have trouble making anything like that! He turned towards the manager, smiling confidently. "Berthold Verdigris, handyman at your service."

"Awesome!" Karine said. "You know what? Go to the back and please put the door hinges on right. I think that is what we were going to be doing next.... was the doors.... yeah." Karine looked at the list the owner had left on the counter.
Karine smiled at Arhenius and Levi. "We serve almost anythng here." She handed a menu to Levi and one to Arhenius. "We have like, twelve different sandwiches."

Berthold smiled warmly, and happily proceeded to the back of the restaraunt. He looked at the hinges on the door, and quickly began getting to work on them. He was used to much more difficult tasks, so this simple hinge job was a very good way to clear his mind. He produced his screwdriver, and set to loosening the screws.

Karine smiled and watched Berthold get working. She set up the sandwich tray and got all the fixings ready for that day, for all the people that would come in looking for lunch that day. She started the grill and customers came into the place, looking hungry.
Today was going to be a good day, Karine thought. Things were looking up for the place.

Someone approached the restaurant. "'Scuse me," he said, with a smile on his face, while going around the man fixing the door. He kept smiling as he turned his head to the bar. The guy approached the counter, took a stool, then sat down.
"Hey Karine," Andrew, or as he was better known, Ender, said. "Been a while, eh?"

"Oh my gosh, yes!" Karine said. She hurried over to her old friend and shook his hand. "How have you been? Jeez, it has been so long," Karine said. "What do you want to drink? This one will be on the house 'cause it has been forever!"
She hurriedly pulled a glass from under the counter. "What's been new with you?" she asked.

Ender pulled Karine's hand shake into a hug. "I don't think we need to be that formal, do we?
The boy sat down again. "Yeah, it has been a while. I've been mostly wandering the past few months. All the time away has mostly blended together, so I can't really tell you anything special that happened... And what's been going on with you?
"Oh, heh, I guess a glass of chocolate milk would be nice. But, I'm really hungry... as usual." He opened up a menu then pointed at things down the list. "I could probably go with one of everything right now, but I'll make things easy and just order two burgers."

Karine felt extremely happy to see a good frined again as she was hugged. She immediately mixed the chocolate milk, and grabbed two burgers out of the freezer. She threw them on the grill and flipped them every few minutes making sure they were cooked all the way through. She set a plate of toppings near Ender as well as some ketchup and mustard and relish.
"Well nothing big really. Olivine was destroyed, as you can see, and thankfully, my house was out of the fray. I just started working here a little while ago and the place was affected.... it was awful. But we got Berthold helping-HEY! BERTHOLD!" Karine yelled. "Come say hi to my friend!" She looked back. "He's helping us fix the place." She said, happily.
'Need anyting else?" Karine asked as she cleaned off the grill counter.

Berthold finished his work on the door's hinges, and set down his tools out of the way. He walked briskly out into the room, and looked around. "Hey. You're that... Ender guy? The one who used to run with Zebedee, before the whole Olivine situation, right?" Berthold uneasily shifted around, feeling crude to have mentioned such a painful situation to a close friend of Zebedee's.
"Well... Yeah, I'm doing... some maintenance." Berthold was slightly embarassed by being caught doing routine housework in front of one of the biggest names in the region when it came to technology.

"Yeah, Ender would be me..." the boy said. He eyed Berthold up and down while taking a sip of his chocolate milk. The guy seemed to be well meaning. He also seemed to be one of those awkward types. At least, from an eyes and ears only stand. As an empath, however, Ender actually felt the emarassment from the last statement.
Normally, he would be filtering emotions, aka completely stopping them, because in a public area, emotions come from all directions and can be very distracting and unsettling. But in this place of friends, he let the walls of his mind down, at least as far as the restaurant's walls. Fortunately, for Ender as well as anyone else, actually reading the surface thoughts of those around took effort; it didn't just flow freely like emotions could. Ender would've hated to violate everyone's privacy by being lazy and not keeping up his mental barriers.
"Heh, no worries dude. That door needed fixing. Someone needed to do it, and because you're that someone, we're all thankful. Until, ya know, we get distracted, at which point we completely forget and throw you by the wayside... Imeanwhat?" Ender grinned at Berthold.

"Well, I guess that I'll just sit down for a cup of tomato soup and wait for my next job." Berthold threw himself down on a stool, and then looked towards Levi. "So, since I seem to be digging into the awkward, ugly moments in everybody's past, what's with your friend's legs? And aren't you a bit young to carry a weapon with you?" Berthold querried Levi, watching the youth. OOC: Just realized. Three of the characters present use some variety of handgun. IIRC, they're all revolvers, too. Kinda amusing. And Steph, wish granted.

OOC: Cheap inside joke approaching awooga awooga.
Karine set down a cup of tomato soup next to Berthold.
"You have to finish the caulking around the windows," Karine said. "And, um, the dumpster's sign fell off, you know, the one that says 'Rent Me?' If the people we rented it from find out that the sign fell off they'll charge us. So you have to weld it back on, or at least bolt it back on," she explained.

OOC: *laughs* Yes, I am in on the inside joke > BIC: Levi ordered a steak sandwich from Karine, and turned to answer Berthold's question. "Arhenius? Oh, she's basically a failed attempt by some corporate head honcho to make the ultimate superweapon. Head and torso of a woman, mechanical body of a giant black widow. Those two flexible claws on her back also spray acid. If she's the failed attempt at a superweapon, then I can't imagine what the final version is gonna be like." Arhenius grunted, and didn't even look at any of them when she spoke. "I hope the final version dissolves in hell." She grunted again, and clenched her fists. "Let it go, Arhenius," Levi sighed. "Anyway, this revolver here's mostly just for bluffs. I have plenty worse to kick arse with. So... You a repairman or something?"

"I dunno. Really, I have a few trades under my belt." Berthold tapped his head. "I've got a knack for holding three-dimensional images in my mind. And because of that, I'm pretty apt at any mechanical trade." He looked around, and shrugged. "My father had me make a lot of parts, but never told me what for. He hinted that it would be a present for somebody really dear. But never told me anything about it otherwise."
He looked at Arhenius, and nodded. "Definately a military design. Not sure about the woman aspect, except maybe as camoflage of some manner. I'd like to get a peek at some of the machinery sometime. Maybe I could work out some upgrades?" He started out the door again, to begin repairing the dumpster.
