you've heard of Photugraphy, now get ready for........Looguistics
ITT: Conlang discussion. I think we really only have like, three or four fantasy languages in ORP as of right now: Raiixian, Kalari, Varkadian, and Aldra-Sa(?). And as you may have noted, three of those are mine, thus the topic name.
So I think I've made it clear before that I have a vested interest in linguistics; in the AU where I went to a lib arts college, that's probably what I would have majored in. As Pohatu has noted, I often come up with "made-up" names for characters. Before, they had no apparent rhyme or reason, because I was a teenager who didn't know what linguistics were. Now, however, I know a little more about how languages work. I don't think I have it in me to sit down and codify a whole system, but I can definitely assign some rules to some of the languages.
Here is what I have so far, in the form of short little facts:
RAIIXIAN:
-Language isolate, because even though it's in the Pacific, it looks or sounds nothing like any of the Oceanic languages around it, with one exception: Ka'inamei looks vaguely Polynesian I guess. I'm running with that and saying that her particular dialect has Polynesian influences. shrug
-Did You Know™? It used to be spelled "Raixian", but Lee spelled it wrong with two Is one time and I liked it so I ran with it.
-Probably has its own writing system. I was trying to come up with a script for a project drawing a little inspiration from the syllabic blocks of Hangul and the look of Canadian Aboriginal syllabics. I was considering refining it into a Raiixian writing system, but I feel like Raiixian would have something more flourishy than what I came up with.
-Altaric Raiixian is a separate tonal language, and is partially mutually intelligible with Modern Standard Raiixian. But it's also endangered, after the Raiixian government started making MSR the official language of everything from education to road signs.
VARKADIAN:
-Moribund. Russification really killed this one. Varkadians aren't a very large ethnic group to begin with, and today very few still speak Varkadian fluently, and fewer still teach it to the younger generations. This is why you may have noticed that Vathalé's first language is Russian.
-I fucked up on this one. Vathalé (and the Varkadians by extension) is from Siberia, specifically around the Central Steppes. That would mean then, that Varkadian should be at least somewhat related to Siberian Turkic languages, but the name "Vathalé" doesn't look particularly Turkic. my bad
KALARI:
-Related to Indo-Aryan, closest relatives are probably Sinhalese and Dhivehi.
-Also has its own script, probably related to the Brahmic scripts.
-you're on your own for this one
comments??? suggestions???
