So, I was thinking on what I liked the most from prior games of Mafia, and I came up with a pretty solid set of guidelines: -I like players having some control in what role/side they get, but not too much. -Everybody should have SOME kind of powers, even if they're fairly minor. -Themed Mafia can be cool, but if you're only doing one a year, it doesn't hurt to just go generic flavor.
My proposal for this current Mafia is that there'll be two sets of powers: One is the standard roles that get assigned to players, but each player when signing up can pick a minor power that they can use.
Some ideas for minor powers: -The Optimist: Whenever there's a tie vote, the Optimist automatically "wins" (e.g., they aren't picked for execution). -The Obsessive: If the Obsessive votes for somebody multiple days in a row, each day, their vote gets 1 bigger. So for example, if they vote Niji day 1, it's 1 vote. Day 2, it's 2 votes. Day 3, it's 3 votes. HOWEVER, changing your vote to anybody else resets this effect.
Any other suggestions? If we keep the flavor of mindsets for the powers, I propose one of the roles is the Psychiatrist, who doesn't know anybody's affiliation, but starts the game knowing what power every player picked.

Got to say I wasn't super crazy about letting everyone pick their own types in Pokemafia, but I can see why you find it appealing, so I like the compromise of having randomly-assigned major types with elective minor types. That seems like a cool way to add some depth.

I played a game that was mafia-like which involved werewolves and it had a cool role-switching mechanic. The roles were assigned randomly via card draw, but several roles allowed them to swap their own card with someone else's (without looking) or swap other people's cards etc and the victims wouldn't even know. Different mechanics, though, since it was a single round game, not a survival game. But that could be something interesting to play with for allowing more agency.
