SOMETHING ON MY MIND
And this is not site-specific
But what writers do you look up to? What writing styles interest you and you take on board that style? I could continue with this stuff but I think this is enough!
Also this is a no-shade topic. Don't get bitchy if someone doesn't like your style and all that shit. I just thought it was an interesting topic
Lee
Lee has an extraordinary talent for dialogue and his choreography is amazing. I read his dialogue and I can picture the actual conversation going on, it goes beyond "character a says this, character b says this, plot continues" and actually gets into believable dialogue that I would expect in an every-day conversation. His choreography is also brilliant, there's no ambiguity with movements of characters (which I find is a common issue in writers in general)(no shade at fanfiction writers but girl take an anatomy course)
Pohatu
On the flip side, Pohatu is brilliant at bringing the logical side of stuff to his characters while also keeping them human (or emotive? idk). Of all of his characters, Shouta is the only one I struggled with trying to find human side, then realized that that was the point. Pohatu makes characters to be believable, with human characteristics that the average reader can relate to, and not feel like "damn I wish that was my life". It's a brilliant balance between "i have powers, sweet!" and "oh shit these can land me in trouble" that really brings it to the table. And that's not to nay-say his power-less characters because Nico is among my favourite characters ever.
Derek Landy
OH SHIT AN ACTUAL AUTHOR Yeah the author of Skulduggery Pleasant, as much as I hate his abuse of commas (which I also think I'm guilty of), he can sell a story, a fight scene, a conversation. I believe in his characters because they're more believable than most authors (looking at you, JK) and he has an entire mechanic to magic that, while it seems like New Powers As The Plot Demands, it becomes less that because a lot of the newcomer characters either have basic magics or it doesn't even come into play.
