archipelagoexodus.proboards.com/board/15/exodus-writing-archiveOne of my old projects was cleaning up spelling and punctuation errors in finished RP topics to make them a little more presentable. The reason only nine topics are actually in the ORP sub-board there, for example, is because those are the only ones I'd fully proofed. But these days I feel kind of dirty about having done that. I look at something like this, and I think, yeah, there's a lot of spelling/punctuation revisions that would make that read better, but we'd be losing something of its essential nature. Why take away the piece of RP history that is Prime spelling "waste" as "waist", "burly" as "burley", and "eyes" as "eye's"? So should I just go ahead and sort the remaining finished RP topics into their appropriate sub-boards? Or is there anyone who would rather see the cleanup continue?

I'd say proofread the topic up to the standard it was aimed at. So the twenty-something Prime/Aurora guardpocalypses don't need any editing, but something like Tri or Whisper in my Ear deserves a once or twice over, and publishable-grade stuff like Ishkabibble, Gasoline, etc. should be made sure to flawless.
My real question as to this is how permissible it would be to alter the fundamental writing behind a post. I mean, spelling and grammar obviously get fixed, but what about obvious writing errors, like using "sword" four times in the span of three back to back sentences? Would it behoove those of us curating the topic for the future to replace one or two of the "sword"s with "blade/weapon" to make it read smoother, or is this presenting an inaccurate version of the author's original artistic vision? On the plus side, this would lead to a smoother reading experience for people, since everything with more-error prone authors (Shoni-Classic, Kaz, Prime, sometimes Kevin) would get a fresh coat of paint, but on the bad side, it does kinda remove the uniqueness. Like, for example, if we archived LTR and changed Prime's posts where he keeps calling Natalie "Rie", that right there actually removes one of the most interesting and amusing things going on at the time.
Of course, there's also the question of how proactive we should be on this front. Since the revival, it's not uncommon for me to pop into people's posts and fix typos where they obviously hit the shift key for too long, or such. It's a tricky balance.

Okay, I've moved several of the obvious candidates for "doesn't need to be held to a high standard" into the ORP archive.
I also renamed General/APCARP to "General & Other" with the intention of deleting the PRP archive (which is empty), but I can't figure out how to delete a board in the new system.

Not gonna lie, if Prime doesn't still "shit somebody in the head", I'm gonna be heartbroken, Mr. Pohatu.

I don't know which RP that's in, but don't spoil it for me, I'll await it with eager anticipation.

Oh, it happened in the OTHER BB topic involving Shin-Ra and Prime. Prime was becoming rapidly irritated, his gun was quite capable of blowing the golems apart, but every time he did, they just reformed. A golem got close enough to take a swing at him again, just just jumped onto its arm, scampered up to its shoulder, and shit it five times in the head. This, of corse, was totally ineffective. He jumped off the golem before it could swat him. "Alright! You dad knows about this place Rick, how the hell do we kill these thin-" Prime voice cut off as a golem kicked him, sending him flying into a nearby tree. He impacted with a boom, and a splash of blood. The tree cracked in half, and nearly fell on top of him. "Oh hell." He groaned, climbing out from under the tree. He whiped the blood from his forhead, trying to keep it from getting in his eye's. His left arm was broken, and hung uselessly at his side. Another golem was baring down on him. He raised his right arm, gun in hand, and emptied his remaining round into its leg, knocking it over, then struggled to reload one handed.

Also, rereading these old RPs has made me realize how ridiculous it was using Zebedee as my main all the time. Remember those days, where everybody had a main character they crammed into everything, and supporting characters were just there to bring out aspects?
I mean back in the day: -Miko was a foil for Zebedee, since he was all about getting things done regardless of the cost, and Zebedee's all about mercy. Summons were also a foil to his Pokemon party. -Thyra was Zebedee's love interest. -Natalie was there for somebody for Zebedee to debate theology with.
-Tsubota, Joseph, and Helen were all just there so Miko would have some hangers-on to help even the odds against Cherrygrove.
-Maude was my first character to go outside the Cherrygrove/Summoner paradigm, so I could fit into smaller topics with lighter cast focuses (where dropping Zebedee or Miko would drag in Ender/Cobra, Sly, Hector, and so forth)

And now Maude is dead, poor thing.
Yeah, you can see the same kind of centralization in e.g. Bulbs' cast (was Jonas his first totally independent character?). And a certain someone else's.

Would you mind if I move this mainboard? It seems like a thread other people could enjoy and give input on, even if it's mostly a discussion of your staff duties.

TBH, I think the first person to honestly use a fully decentralized cast, at least, who hasn't been lost to the sands of time, is Loogs. Her cast eventually converged, but for the longest time, Hector, Nadeshi, and Epsilon had like nothing to do with eachother. I mean, they all were coming of age stories, but I digress.

Sure, go ahead and move it if you like.
People, this is what the Coffee Table is like, it's just endless discussion of forum minutiae peppered with Prime disses. So it's exactly like every other board.

Proofed Beyond the Bullet.
Observations: Achenes refers to Aquara as "the genius" twice in her internal prose and I'm not sure if it's possible to do that without sounding sarcastic as hell.

Oh, good ol' Beyond the Bullet, where the writing turned into a flowchart. Because if you didn't state exactly what string of responses your character would have to each action Zabuza took, Prime would proceed to assume that your character was just standing stock still and would auto-hit a combination attack on you. Not Achenes' finest moment.

Due to the relative from silence since I posted this, I assume everybody's quiet because they're demanding to read my post full of Achenes-goodness. So here it is:
Drinker Island was most aptly named, Achenes mused as she kicked a charred beercan away. It clattered down the slope of the dormant volcano, ricocheting from rock to rock. Far below her vantage point, dozens of speedboats, canoes, sailboats, and other watercraft were pulling into the shallows. This was the last Saturday of the summer, and all manner of teens and collegiates were pouring onto the designated party shore of the least-policed island in the Archipelago.
Achenes licked her lips, and cocked her newsboy cap to shade her eyes against the glare of the setting sun. If she wanted to, she could go charging down there and bust dozens of people for underage drinking, illegal substances of every stripe, and so forth, but that wasn't why she was here. Though she didn't approve of the youth squandering their lives like this, she was after much bigger fish.
Some dealers had been selling heroin at the last couple of these bashes, and furthermore, they'd been cutting it with something... vile. In the past month alone, there'd been over thirty deaths from the contaminated drugs. Even through their high, the victims died screaming. The girl shook her head. She'd wonder why anybody would risk something like that, but she knew it all too well. People her age thought themselves invincible, and when their judgment was compromised, all sense of self-preservation went out the window. She had to wonder what the dealers were thinking, killing off their clientel like that, but it could very well be the same short-sighted idiocy that the other kids had.
Kids... Achenes mused. Funny how she was in the same age range, but considered herself so vastly detached from their frivolous concerns. She ran her glove clad hand across a bullet-pocked case, letting her eyes drift shut.
"WHONK!"
A sonorous cry blasted out from behind her. Achenes spun instantly, heaving the case into a powerful backhand at head level. The strike blew well over the head of a chubby, ground-bound bird, the air from the blow ruffling its disshevelled grey feathers. The brawler regarded the creature suspiciously. It seemed harmless, but then again, it did stand almost as high as her chest.
It waddled towards her, a keel of fat wobbling back and forth with every step. The bird cocked its featherless head, its yellow eyes containing neither fear nor intelligence.
"WHONK!" It bent down, and scooped up a rock with its beak. After a brief pause, trying to get the stone facing the right way, it gulped it down.
"Are you... are you okay?" Achenes wrinkled her nose.
"WHONK!" The bird pecked at her foot.
"Ow, bitch!" Achenes used her leg to scoop its head upwards, and fetched it a loud slap across the face. The flightless bird staggered two steps to the side, reeling from the impact.
It steadied itself, and glanced over its shoulder at her.
"WHONK!" The daft creature began meandering its way away from Achenes.
"I swear, even the fucking turkeys are drunk here," She sighed, and turned her gaze back towards the bay.

Also, maaan, I'm loathing Beyond The Bullet again. I mean, when your character shivs somebody in the face with a deliberately sharpened piece of plastic, and it gets dismissed as "She's too small for her headbutt to damage anybody", it's just like "really?"
Not to mention the fact that Achenes has been repeatedly established as having borderline superhuman strength (clearly superhuman for her size, at the very least), and half a dozen times, it's said that she's too small for her hits to register. I mean, for fuck's sake, in Emet, she almost blows a heavy door off its hinges just by opening it with one hand.
This may be a controversial opinion, but Zabuza's my least favorite member of Prime's cast. At least Prime had the beer & pretzels kind of guy thing going for him, and was fun in social topics, and Eragon had some narm charm going. Zabuza just did things the rest of Prime's cast did, but worse.
That said, Aquara v. Achenes is some good stuff. Kevin's weird, because his visuals are arguably the best on the site (or at least on par with El, myself, and Silumas), but his writing chops aren't quite up to snuff to convey the imagery he's pumping out. If there was a way it wasn't horribly unfeasible, I'd almost wish there was some way Kevin could like, draw a page of manga instead of doing writing, because his writing is solid and serviceable, but his imagery is frickin' gorgeous.

Important question: When we finalize the retcon of city names, should we go through old RPs and fix the names accordingly?
