I thought I was normal. You know normal, right? Get up in the morning, have breakfast, kiss your mother goodbye and go to school. This was a day like any other, and I did just those things. I had no idea that was the day my life would be turned on its head, that I would find out I wasn't even alive anymore. That the real Leon was already long dead, and I was just a fake, only there as a temporary replacement. Destined to fade away after a few days. Little did I know, that was the day when my entire life began. The very opposite of what I'd believed. Nothing... will ever be the same.
Roger tapped Leon on the shoulder, trying to get his attention. "Hey man, class is over, snap out of it huh?" Leon looked around, startled out of his revere. "What?" He asked, looking around. "Oh sorry." He said, "I didn't realise everyone was leaving. Did the bell ring?" He asked Roger, picking up his stuff and following his friend out of the door. "Yeah, schools over man. Time to go home. Startling isn't it?" Roger said, punching him in the ribs jovially. "Yeah, yeah." Leon said, "But can you blame me for daydreaming? We've gone over this stuff a thousand times, it's not like my grades are suffering." Roger shrugged, "True enough." Leon shrugged, pushing the school doors open, standing there for a moment to let a few girls pass.
"Hey, you want to head downtown to the CD store man? I hear they've got some new albums out." Leon asked Roger, "Nah man, sorry." Roger responded, "But I've got to head down to crash." Leon shook his head, "Studying for college exames already? Your parents are crazy man, we're only in our freshmen year." Roger shrugged, "Got to keep them happy, otherwise my allowence suffers." Leon laughed, slapping his friend on the back. "Alright, well I'll see you tomorrow then. I'm gonna go check out the record store on my own. My music is starting to get old." Roger punched him in the shoulder and Leon walked off, "Right, see you tomorrow."
Leon was quitly browsing through the record lables when he bumped into someone, he looked around. "Oh sorry, I didn't see you there." He said to a girl a little shorter than him, she looked oddly familiar. "Oh, Leon, do you live downtown to?" She asked, then he suddenly remembered. Her name was Clair, she was from his homeroom. "Oh no I don't, I only came down this way to look through the new labels." He said, she looked surprised for a moment. "You came this far out of your way for music?" Leon shrugged, "The stores closer to my house have a somewhat pathetic stock, besides, the walks are good exercise." She laughed, and they continued talking for a little while, before she said goodbye and left.
Leon finished up what he was doing, bought a CD he wanted. Metallical kicks ASS! And heade out the door, he was halfway down the street before he noticed something wrong. Blue glyphs of light crawling across the ground, no one else appeared to see it. Then, suddenly energything was cast in shades of red, and he couldn't see the sky anymore. "What the hell-" He started to say, when something else cut him off. "What that?" A voice asked, "Its moving inside the Fujetzu, it can't be a human." Leon turned around, and beheld a monster. What appeared to be a 20 foot tall reptilian humanoid holding several human skulls on a string was speaking. The head cluster spoke, "It must be a mistes, but ignore it for now. Focus on collecting existence for master." It said.
"Yes ma'am!" The giant lizard answered in a child's voice. It opened it's mouth and appeared to take a deep breath, and instantly the frozen human's around him, uncluding Clair, were dissolved and sucked into the giant as some kind of white light. "What the hell!" Leon said, stumbling back and tripping over. The reptilian quickly finished up all the nearby humans, then started reaching for Leon, cackling gleefully. It grabbed him, he fought it, but was completely powerless before its immense strength. He'd just about accepted death when there was a flash of light, and its arm fell to the ground, Leon bouncing out of its hand.
A girl, about Leon's age, with red hot hair and crimson eye's was suddenly standing between him and the monster. She was holding a flaming katana, and wearing a blick robe open fronted. "Its just a Rinn." A voice said, "Yes I know," the girl responded, "But we still cannot allow it to wander around the city." She said, "Mmmmhm." Was the only response she got. She darted forwards, a blast of flame propelling her forwards, and sliced the reptilian in half, which screamed a token, flinging its skull cluster at her. She jumped over it, leaving scortch marks on the ground as her fire propelled her over it. It took only moments for the reptile to vanish, before she'd even hit the ground.
"Watch out!" The strange voice said again, and she wirled around, the skull cluster having launched itself at her, screaming. A quick upward cut left it ineffective as well, and she landed in front of Leon, turning to face the former skull cluster, which was now simply a young woman, though still older than Leon himself. "So thats your true form?" The young girl asked. The older woman stumbled away from her, "Stay away from me!" She screamed. The young girl advanced on her, her sword held high. "Wait!" Leon yelled, injecting himself in between the two. "There's no reason to kill her now, she's helpless!" The young girl scowled at him, "You don't know?" She asked penitively, then her eye's widened in shock, and Leon felt something thrust into himself from behind, invading him, reaching...
The young girl brought her sword down, cutting through Leon's shoulder and the woman's arm. "I'm cut-" Leon stuttered in shock, looking around at the flame haired girl wide eye'd. She advaned on the woman, who was on the ground crawling backwards. "STOP!" She screamed. The flame haired girl brought her sword down, yet again, a body disappeared. A little doll darted out of the mass, hovering in the air she turned towards the flame haired girl. "My master will make you hurt for this!" Then flew off at high speed. "What?" Leon asked, still in shock. "Help me!" He implored of the flame haired girl. "Would you stop whining? Its destracting." She said, "But the blood!" Leon responded. Wait, where's the blood? He thought, looking at his wound. Where there should have been blood an tissue, there was only a black, rubberlike mass.
The flame haired girl sheathed her sword into thin air, and walked over to him, grabbing his severed shoulder. She pushed it back into place, and blue flame appeared around it for a moment, before it became whole with his body again. "What the?" Leon choked out, looking around. The same flame was everywhere, repairing everything that has been damaged in the fight, street and all. "Why?" he asked, standing up. The flame haired girl turned around, snapping her fingers. The street filled with people again, blue fire burning inside them. "You ressurected everyone?" He asked. "No, they're just torches." She answered. "What's a torch?" He asked. She sighed, "Dammit, why can't you leave me alone.?" The misterious voice spoke again, "Just tell him, I dont think he'll be satisfied until he knows." She shrugged, and turned around.
"That monster you just saw was a Rinn, a doll created to serve a Tomogara, an entity that prowls these lands seeing to feed on existance." She said, "Those people are torches, they're fakes. They're there to absorb the shock that losing the real people would cause to the universe. They'll disappear after a few hours, maybe a few days at most." She said, pointed, "See?" He looked at them more closely. They had blue flames burning in they're chests. "Your own as well." She said, pointing at his own chest. He looked down, then recoiled in shock. There was blue fire burning in his chest. He closed his eye's, and shook his head. "I suppose theirs no point in denying it." He said.
She turned around, and began to walk away. The redness around them vanished, and people started moving again. "Wait!" He yelled, catching up to her. "What's going to happen to me?" He asked. "The same as the other torches," She responded, "You'll just disappear after a few days. No one will remember you at all." Leon walked in silence for a moment...
"No." He said.
"What?" The girl asked.
"I won't fade away, I won't let it happen. I'm Leon, I exist, that's enough isn't?" He asked. She sighed, "Why do you even bother denying it, it'd going to happen whether you want it or not. You are a torch, I am I Flame Haze." She said, "You are destined to end after a few hours, and I am destined to fight Tomogara here on earth." Leon looked confused for a moment. "Whats a Flame Haze?" He asked. "Dammit, would you just SHUT UP!" She yelled, but Leon persisted. "Look, you are not Leon, the real Leon is already dead. Just accept it and leave me alone!"
He stopped in his tracks. "I may not be Leon, but I exist now. I will live on as I am now, won't I? Even if I am a torch, knowing what I am and doing something with it can make a difference won't it?" The girl honestly looked shocked for a moment, then shrugged angerly and stomped off. Leon followed her, she continued to ignore him.
Some time and distance saw them standing on a riverbank in the center of town, overlooking the sunset. Leon looked at the sunrise, then back at the girl. "Well, could you at least tell me your name?" He asked.
"I am a Flame Haze." She answered.
"But that's not your name is it? That's just what you are, the same as myself being a torch." Leon said.
"I'm just a Flame Haze, I don't require a name. You are just a torch, act like it, your annoying me." She answered. Leon scowled,
"I have to call you something, I'm not going to wander around calling you Flame Haze all the time." He said.
Her eyebrow twitched, "If your really so adamant that you have to call me something, the name of my sword, Naieto No Shana will do." She said.
"Fine then, your name is Shana!" Leon said forcefully. Shana looked surprised, mouthing the name. "Your no longer just a Flame Haze, you name is Shana. And I'm no longer just a Torch, my name is Leon!" He said forcefully. "Ok?" Shana looked confused for a moment, then turned around, cursed, and jumped, the flame around her feet forcing Leon back.
"Why does this one torch irritate me so much?" Shana asked herself, alone now. Though she was sitting on the roof of Leon's house.
"Just ignore him." A deep bass voice said from around her neck, her pendant speaking to her. "Still, we have to keep an eye on it. It seems to be a unique torch." The voice said.
"I know Alastor, but it bothers me." Shana said. Alastor simply mad a non-committal noise. "Why should I be bothered by this one torch so much?" Shana asked, looking up at the stars. It started raining.
Roger tapped Leon on the shoulder, trying to get his attention. "Hey man, class is over, snap out of it huh?" Leon looked around, startled out of his revere. "What?" He asked, looking around.
