Speaking of activity, I'm thinking of doing a Summer Writing Contest
Well not so much thinking as, making sure you guys are cool with it.
Here's what I have so far.
"The Short Stories of Summer"
May, June, and July will each have a contest. May 1st through May 26th with results being posted on May 31st. June 1st through June 25th with results being posted on June 30th. July 1st through July 26th with results posted on July 31st.
This will be interesting in that I am employing something we did in Fiction class this semester. There will be a list of Criteria that goes along with each story.
Example (I'm showing the one we got for class)
1. Must be no shorter than 338 words and no longer than 501 words.
2. No more than four characters but no fewer than one.
3. Must include the name Fred.
4. Has to include weather as part of the setting.
5. Must reference either a pet or sporting event.
This was for our Short Shorts so A ) the word counts (or page counts) will be bigger for normal short stories and B ) there will be a total of 10-12 criteria for each story.
Judging, first is strictly points. Each Judge (there will be three) will read the story and for each criteria rate (from one to ten) how creatively they met each one. Those will then be totaled and averaged with the story who got the most points wining Judging phase one.
Example.
Criteria 3 scores - Judge1: 9, Judge2: 5, Judge3: 8 = Average Score: 7.3
Criteria 3 gets a 7.3
Phase two- Fan Favorites. Simple, everyone will vote for what they thought was the best story and/or followed the Criteria the best. People can't vote for their own. Whoever gets the most votes will win.
If by this point both Phase One and Phase Two are the same story then that's the winner. If they are different then that's where Phase Three comes in. The Judges will take the two stories, and vote for which one is the best.
Once someone wins they are not eligible to participate again. At the end of the three months we will have a winner for each month. To determine the overall winner the original points they earned from Phase one will be applied to see who wins the overall phase one. Then Fan Favorites, looking only at those three then Phase Three will be the same.
I figure each months winner should get something, with the overall winner getting an extra prize.
Also to participate a person must have been a member on or before April 7th.
I am going to be a judge and I am going to talk to Chelsea tonight in Vent and see if she wants to Judge as well (if I can't get a hold of her I'll just PM her.) That will leave one more spot open.
So what we think?
