Maude sat still in the midst of Ilex Forest, her arms hanging tightly to the powerful treetrunk she had decided to ascend. She began to slowly inch up the tree, feeling the scaley bark of the tree in her grasp. Her nails dug into the bark, not even penetrating it, but giving her purchase for her ascent. She began to increase the pace of her climb, scrambling up the vertical surface faster than most people could run on level ground.
She quickly seized a large branch where it protruded from the trunk. Rolling from trunk to limb with unnatural grace, Maude landed on her hands, with her feet wrapped around the branch to hold her safely above the ground. From this spot, she could see over virtually all of the trees, but not all of them. That wasn't quite high enough for her intended purpose today. She quickly rose to her feet, and began climbing once more. Her loose, lightly colored clothes fluttered in the increasing wind, and her hair blew about her, threatening to tangle in the abundant twigs. Once she had reached the point where the tree trunk got too thin to support even her meager weight, she looked down over the treetops of the forest. Still, many trees hampered her view.
Maude gave a small sigh, and focused on the amulet she wore around her neck. Instantly, wings of glorious golden hues faded in, forming from the ether. They seemingly sprouted from her back, yet strangely enough had not ripped through the back of her shirt. Spreading her wings, Maude burst from the canopy, liberated from the opressive law of gravity. She flapped skywards, a loose feather drifting to the earth in a whimsical manner. She began to fly towards the area she had heard noise from, and, as she cleared the trees, could not help but gasp.
The quiet tranquility of her home had been violated. A large yellow machine, inelegant and utilitarian, had begun to advance into the sacred forest. It was apparently some kind of standard vehicle for the task of clearing the woods, but to Maude, it was one thing. Dread.
