A man sat alone in a booth of one of the many Lunar bars. He was in the middle of carving his name into the desk with a pocket knife when he heard the local news station's theme song. Ethan looked up at the most convenient screen.
"Good evening, and welcome to the channel 3 news. I'm Jim Brown--"
"--and I'm Linda Nelson--"
"--bringing you the latest news."
The TV screen focused on Linda as she began talking. "Tensions have escalated to full out war on Mars. In the past few days, Mars' Military leader, General Liang Zhi Zheng--" (she stumbled over the name) "--had declared complete independence from the American and Chinese governments on the planet, and started a new military government.
"Today, the American and Chinese leaders were found assassinated. The two governments blame the now independent military, officially declaring war despite the military's claims of innocence. However, the Chinese and Americans on Mars had kept very weak forces due to the fact that the Martian Military had handled that affair for the past few decades."
"This just in," Jim cut in as an intern quickly handed him a piece of paper. "The Martian military has managed to completely overwhelm the Chinese and Americans and has forced them to surrender."
"Oh my, and all this in only one day," Linda gasped.
"Yes, a dire day in--" Jim's voice cracked out as static blasted through the speakers. Suddenly, the screen switched. A man with a hard face that seemed to be chiseled out of stone and blue eyes took over the screen. Judging by the various medals on his orange-brown suit and the orange-brown hat sitting on his light hair, he was with the military.
"Good evening, Lunies. The Martian Military politely requests that Luna surrenders its independence to us," he chuckled, "or we'll drop the politeness."
He paused and looked down and frowned. He looked up again. "Well, unfortunately, your Chancellor has refused to surrender. Good day."
The screens cut to static again and the entire bar shook. Ethan instinctively ducked under the thick wooden table as the lights flickered and dust fell from the ceiling. The rest of the bars' patrons did the same or ran outside to see what was happening. The establishment shook again. Ethan supposed that the Martians had destroyed the nearest power generator, or at least some of the underground power lines, because the lights stayed off this time.
Suddenly, there was an explosion outside the door. Ethan could barely hear the cries of the people who had run outside due to the ringing in his ears, though his hearing quickly returned due to his past training as an army man. More cries emanated from the doorway, mixed with the sounds of bullet fire and energy discharges. Several of the other bars' patrons ran outside, armed with pistols and the like. Ethan felt sorry for them already, but he knew that trying to run outside to save someone's life would just get him killed.

Hex floated slowly, in and out. Pain, terrible pain, but cut off from himself. He couldn't react to it, almost as though unable to feel it. A floating sensation, far too light, not quite right. Slow tides, felt so wrong. A commotion, vibrations, so low he shouldn't be able to hear them.
Slowly, Hex opened his eyes. Water, it flooded his sight. He blinked several times, trying to focus. A mask was over his face -- oxygen, the sweet smell, nectar of life. He took it in with great gasping breaths. The water vibrated, and he heard it, sounds so low he shouldn't be able to detect them. Booms, great, low booms. Explosions.
He sat up, smaking his head on the glass, water-filled coffin he was in. He bit off a curse, bubbles streaming past his face. The neural spike was still in his head, though. He guessed it was impossible to remove it once it was connected to the nervous sytem.
<Anubis?> he thought.
<I'm here Hex! Are you all right?> his ship responded.
<Yes, I'm fine. But I thought I was shot?> Hex said, looking at his chest through the water.
<Yes you were. I'm sorry, I couldn't protect you.> Anubis said sadly.
<It's all right, everything is okay now,> Hex said, but then screamed in his mind as a harsh, stabbing pain ran up his right arm. He looked at it through the water. It was a black, cybernetic arm, with blue circuits running through it.
<Hex, Hex!> Anubis called out.
<Yes, yes I'm here!> Hex said, looking at his arm. <It seems that they've removed my right arm. How curious,> He added, flexing it carefully. It felt powerful, yet dextrous. <Oh well, the new one seems just as good, if not better.>
He then smashed the glass over his head. It burst out in a vicious spray, but no one else was around to get injured by it. Hex climbed out of the tank, totally naked, and felt rather different about himself. His body wasn't thin or frail, as it used to be, but covered by a hard new later of muscle. He examined himself curiously, then walked out of the labs. No one was around to stop him.
The lunar surface was chaos. Troops were in the streets, and Hex had to hide himself from them, and from everyone else, to avoid attracting attention. He was naked after all. He stole carefully down the street, and darted into a clothing shop. He pulled on some jogging pants, and a hoodie, and stole back into the streets, heading for the nearest bar. People tended to gather there, and if he was lucky, he'd be able to steal somebody's car keys.
He walked into the tavern curiously, looking around, but only a single soul seemed to be there. "Hey, who are you?!" he asked curiously. "And how the hell do we get out of here?"

Ethan's back was to the door, so when he heard a voice, he quickly reached into his jacket for his dart gun. Before he took out the weapon, however, he turned his head, and saw that the newcomer was not dressed in the Martian military orange-brown fatigues. His hand relaxed back to his side as he turned around to address the man.
"Dr. Ethan O'Connor." He held out a hand for a handshake, despite the chaos outside. "We'll need to look outside if we want to find a way out."
Ethan jogged through the doorway and into the streets. He looked up at the biodome's curved shell, toward the main dock, to find three military converted Martian heavy freighters hovering around it, all with flexible personnel tubes connected to a fourth. The fourth freighter had actually crashed through the main dock's glass shell, and acted as a make-shift tunnel for the Martian clone army.
Two Scarabs also hovered directly over the main city's glass bubble. Swarms and swarms of Martian fighters flew around the carriers, breaking into and out of formation with each other. Suddenly, the Scarabs began to turn, and Ethan saw why: a Lunar Desecration cruiser had lifted off. The Desecration cruiser's two massive claws began to charge up the anti-matter devices; however, the cruiser was dwarfed just by one of the massive Scarabs. The two Martian carriers had had their 'mandibles' on slow charge the entire time, so in less than a minute, an amorphous blob of antimatter plasma was created.
In one large discharge of destruction, the two Scarabs let fly the streams of antimatter plasma, the straight lines of glowing particles completely tearing apart the Desecration cruiser. Ethan had to shield his eyes from the intense light of the weaponry.
Blaster fire entered the doctor's ear. He turned his head to see a small squad of Lunar authorities trying to shoot at an overwhelming number of orange-brown, each member of the army having the same exact face. They were completely mowed down by the Martian assault rifles. Ethan didn't wait around and ran straight down a back alley, hoping that the new guy would take the cue and follow him.
"Well, I can tell you that we won't be getting out that way," Ethan said while pointing up.

Hex shook Ethan's hand, and then ran out right behind him. He followed the man down the street, careful not to lose himself in the chaos. "True enough!" Hex said, when Ethan pointed out it wasn't wise to leave from the port, for the moment.
They sped around a corner, only to find themselves behind a rusty red, Martian-style iron VS, or Vital Suit. It had four legs, with treads on each leg, and if the rumors were to be believed, it could transform into a tank. It didn't have arms, but it had a laser cannon on one shoulder, and a missile launcher on another. "Whoa, I'm glad it's facing the other way," Hex said, rolling up the sleeve on his right arm, and showing Ethan his cybernetic arm. "It gives me an idea." He flashed a grin.
He ran up behind the quadrupedal tank and jumped onto one of its legs, pulling himself up like a child. He swung his leg up onto the metal, and prayed that the pilot hadn't noticed. Slowly, he crawled up the leg, then jumped and pulled himself onto the top of the cockpit. The clanking alterted the pilot, however, who started swinging the tank this way and that, trying to dislodge Hex.
"Shit!" Hex bit off, and punched the hatch with his right arm. The biometal broke a hole in the hatch, and Hex pried it open, then punched the pilot out cold. The tank was suddenly motionless. He pulled the man out, and threw him down to the street. "Pretty cramped!" he called to Ethan. "But enough room for two! Come on!" He climbed into the cockpit and flipped a switch, and it converted itself into a rather low-to-the-ground tank.

Ethan squeezed into the VS' cockpit.
"We could try the secondary dock," Ethan said. He pointed in the direction, only to see a large plume of smoke over the buildings that obscured the view. "Or maybe the tertiary one?"
There was no smoke over there, but there were no guarantees.

"Or we could go get my ship." Hex said, swinging the VS around toward the southern pole of the moon. "Before I was captured, I managed to move it that far, and engage the magnetic docking clamps. They won't have been able to remove it without removing the ship's superstructure. And I'm pretty sure there aren't any martials watching it. They shouldn't even know it's there."
He quickly accelerated and rounded a corner, using the magnetic treads to stay on the ground. "So that'd probably be our best bet, for the moment. Considering the Anubis was specifically designed to stand alone in this type of combat." He swerved around another corner, only to find another Martian VS in the way. "Shit!" Hex said, engaging the brakes and disengaging the magnetic treads.
The VS quickly went back to its quadruped mode, and Hex jumped it onto one of the steel blocks that passed for buildings on Luna. He quickly locked on with the missiles, and launched three of them from the rack, just as the Martian VS turned to face them. With its laser cannon, it shot the missiles out of the air, but it was unable to lock onto Hex's VS due to the smoke that was now in the way. Hex reversed the magnetic coils, weak though the effect was on Mars, and glided over the surface of the metal buildings, with the magnetic fields holding the suit up. He shot through the smoke, swung around, disengaged the magnetic fields, and shot his laser cannon at one of the enemy VS joints. It melted and broke off, and Hex fired one more missile, destroying the cockpit and sending debris everywhere.
Sweat dripped off Hex's face, and he gave Ethan a sidelong glance. "Would you mind taking over for a bit?" he asked. "I feel like I've just run a marathon with a broken leg." He was panting heavily. His hands and arms were shaking on the controls.

"I'm a doctor, not a pilot," Ethan mumbled while looking over the controls. He pressed an LCD button that read "Tank Mode." Fortunately, Martians didn't like senseless obfuscation, so the VS turned into the tank. The LCD button changed to "Quad mode," but Ethan was paying more attention to the joystick. He pushed it forward, and the VS did as told.
As they rounded a corner, Ethan saw a bright flash of light from the corner of his eye. He looked up, to see one of the Scarabs breaking in half, brief splays of fire bursting from the opening as escaping oxygen lit on fire. Unlike the movies, which even at present, displayed huge explosions for ships, the Scarab was almost serene while the two sections drifted apart. Three Desecration cruisers, painted the blue and black of the Earth forces, surrounded the two Scarabs, a fourth Desecration cruiser falling apart from the Scarabs' previous attacks. Small groups of Slipstreams were weaving through the Martian fighters, using their laser cells to shoot fighters from the air.
Despite its crippled state, the half-Scarab still managed to charge up one last shot, cutting off half of one of the Desecration cruisers. Since it was busy falling apart, the Scarab couldn't aim properly. One of the Desecrators had its two claws charged and ready, and arcs of antimatter plasma shot forward, twisting in a seemingly random path towards the Scarabs remains.
Ethan tore his eyes away from the fight and went back to driving the vehicle. Maybe they would be able to get out from the sky.

Hex looked warily back up at the sky, pondering. The situation wasn't exactly getting any better. Two Earth Forces ships instead of Martian ships didn't make things easier for him, though perhaps they might for his companion. Hex would prefer it if they could escape in the middle of a battle.
They finally reached the edge of the dome, and Hex launched a rocket, blowing a hole in the glass. They passed through onto the harsh landscape of the moon, just a moment before the glass sealed itself shut via a series of veins pumping a sealant through the dome.
"All right, it's in that canyon up ahead. I feel a bit better now, so you can stop." Hex grabbed the other joystick and gave the good doctor an apologetic look. "Just so you know, whether there are Earth forces or Martian forces up there, we'll have trouble. Sadly, I tried to steal the most secret of ships, which is why I was captured in the first place. But thankfully, my ship is close by, and I'm still in command. My name is Hex, by the way," he added, as they passed over the edge of the crater, revealing the long, wide sharp spike that was the Anubis. It was only about sixty meters tall, enough room for about six decks. It had eight guns, four on the top, and four on the bottom. Beams of magnetic energy so strong that they could be seen as a constant aurora borealis effect tethered it to the ground.
"Welcome to the Anubis, likely one of the most powerful ships in the solar system."
A ramp opened to admit them. He quickly stored the VS, and repressurized the bay. "You wouldn't happen to know anything I need to know to get us out of here, would you?" he asked, jumping out of the VS cockpit and leading Ethan toward the bridge.

"Not particularly. As the Martians did, you could just blast through the dome." Ethan yawned. "Anyways, if you're wanted all over the place, the Belt is probably the best place to go."

"Well," Hex said, "it's not like I'm wanted in Martian space, but I doubt we should really be heading in that direction, considering the origins of this ship." He shrugged, leading Ethan into the bridge. "So I guess the Belt is as good a place as any. Strap yourself in tight -- this ship can pull some major acceleration."
He stripped down to his underwear and stepped into an indentation in the center of the room. "Just so you know, this'll happen to you too. However, you don't have to take your clothing off," Hex said in an exasperated voice.
A tube of glass surrounded Hex, and quickly filled up with purple water. It contained a high oxygen-nitrogen concentration, and for some reason which eluded Hex, he was quite capable of breathing it in comfort. He took a deep breath of the stuff, and closed his eyes.
And saw the harsh, white surface of the moon. Of course, he didn't see it in like he viewed it through his own eyes. It was in a harsh mixture of reds and blues and greens, covering a full spectrum. He could even see X-rays and radio waves, among other things.
<Anubis?> he asked, entirely within his own thoughts.
<Yes, I'm here. We are together. I will maintain you,> Anubis said, focusing all of its processing power on enhancing Hex's mind through the neural spike in his head.
Hex let out a mental smile, and then released the magnetic clamps. Ethereal waves slowly pushed against the surface of the moon, generated by the plating of the Anubis itself. Hex slowly brought the ship into orbit, carefully avoiding any power levels that would attract attention. He took a deep mental breath, braced himself, and then powered up the Seven Ethereal Reaction Chambers, bringing the ship up to full power.
"I hope you're strapped in and immersed, Ethan, otherwise this is gonna be rough," he said over the ship's speakers. Then he opened the engine ducts, and thousands of tons of pressurized particles charged the ship's plating.
The ship began to shimmer, then emitted bright light. The Martian and Earth Forces ships in orbit oriented on it, forgetting each other for the moment, to investigate this possible danger. A carrier launched a wing of fighters to investigate, which quickly advanced on the Anubis. Hex cursed, and targeted them with the Ethereal Particle Cannons. He fired them at half power, since the generators hadn't fully charged. The beams stuttered and fell silent before reaching the ships.
The fighter pilots scattered here and there, losing their nerve. A fighter strayed too close, and Hex lashed out with the cannons, tearing it in half. Its chemical fuel ignited and it exploded in a moment. Finally the ship's plating fully charged, and the light dulled back down to a blue shimmer. The ship darted off into the long night, under massive acceleration.

Aidan sat on his small cot, waiting for his life finally to end. He had been on the Renaissance for about three days now. The solar flare knocked him back to emergency power. This was what he got for being such a pacifist during the war. He couldn’t choose a side so he went neutral just like his mom told him. He hated his mom.
He wondered if the distress signal had gotten out. Probably not, seeing how his life was going. Deported off Earth and recruited in the army, all for nothing. He was stuck in a tin can in the middle of nowhere. He decided to wait out his last hours of oxygen with a calm slumber.

OOC: I'd like to point out that about 50% of my vocabulary is pseudovocabulosynthesized (pseudovocabulosynthesis (n) - a word ch00beh made up that describes the process of making fake words) And a <,> is a comma. Apostrophes are commas flying in the air. Sentence fragments, comma splices, etc etc are issues with people on these boards who've been around awhile, so don't worry too much about those. I mean, used in the right way, they can be downright stylistic. Seriously, the English language is hopelessly complicated. The most you have to worry about is just making sure that your posts are readable. I mean, once you've hit a year and still can't form a proper sentence, first I'll wonder why your school sucks so much, then I'll hit you with a log. Kazkame, if you haven't yet, check this topic outBIC: Ethan, to say the least, was mildly discomforted by the liquid surrounding him. Sticking his hand, uncovered because of a lack of latex gloves, into the chest cavity of a nearly dead marine while the transport accelerated into orbit didn't bother him much, but the stuff around him at present did. The much higher acceleration of the Anubis didn't help very much either. Finally, when he felt like he'd lose his lunch, Ethan felt the ship slowing down. He assumed they had reached the Belt... though it was such a short amount of time...

The fluid drained out of the tube around Ethan, which then slid back into the sealing, releasing him to clean air. "Sorry about that," Hex said over the intercom. "When you're traveling at a 62 G acceleration, however, I don't really recommend being outside of the fluid."
He switched on a viewport for Ethan, showing the asteroid formation they were coming up on. Seven, irregularly placed asteroids, tethered together by strong wires, which somehow also acted as support struts, so the asteroids would neither drift apart, nor slam together. Odd tubes and protuberances punctered the asteroid's surface, and the whole place looked rather busy. Small support ships darted around the asteroids, and out into a nearby asteroid field. Hex thought they were probably gathering water. They needed it for the hydroponics bay, and to produce air and hydrogen, which was useful in fusion reactions.
He slowly brought the Anubis in to dock, sending the port authorities a message that they were refugees from a war which had broken out between Mars and Earth. The belters accepted his request for sanctuary, complimented his odd ship, and told him and any passengers with him not to go wandering outside of the port city area -- they didn't want them screwing with any of their equipment. (Which Hex understood perfectly.)
He slowly brought the Anubis into a docking bay, and clamps came out of the walls to firmly grasp his ship and hold it in position. A physical shield appeared around the entrance, and the dock quickly pressurized, allowing Hex and Ethan to disembark. Hex canceled flight mode, and the tube surrounding him was emptied of fluid and then slid back into the floor.
He quickly expelled the purple fluid from his lungs, coughing and hacking until he was sure it was all gone. He wiped his mouth, and looked at Ethan. "I suppose I'll get used to it eventually, but God that stuff tastes sickly sweet." He scraped at his tongue comically. "Shall we go?"

OOC: I hope this works
BIC: Aidan awoke to the sound of an alarm; it was the answer to his distress call. He quickly brought up the video screen, to reveal his commanding officer. Officer Dwight Eisenhower III led a medic unit for America and controlled it with an iron fist.
“MARX!!!” said Eisenhower. “Where the hell have you been? I need you to transfer that medical data to the Belter colonies."
Aidan sat in the captain’s chair of his small vessel with great discomfort. “Sir, I don’t have enough power for the trip nor the supplies.”
Eisenhower nearly fainted at the response. “Are you that inept, soldier? Don’t you remember that your ship has a solar panel for these occasions?"
Aidan suddenly remembered what that button with the image of the sun with sun glasses was for. "Sorry sir I forgot, I shall complete my assignment by tomorrow."
Dwight turned his back to the screen and said, “You'd better, or I’ll be forced to discharge you from the service.” The screen quickly shut off, leaving a dead silence through the ship.
Aidan sulked towards the command center and pressed the solar panel button and set in the coordinates for the Belter colonies. After an hour, the Renaissance chugged towards its destination. Its captain slept in his irregular cot for most of the ride through space. Awakened again by the sound of beeping, he saw his destination and its docking bay. After sending his military ID to docking command, he quickly flew to the docking bay. The Belters accepted his request for a momentary stay, ridiculed his odd ship, and told him and any passengers with him not to go wandering outside of the port city area -- they didn't want them screwing with any of their equipment.

OOC: Kazkame, getting better, but don't forget to double space between paragraphs so it's easier to read. The intarweb doesn't have indentation, so yeah. BIC: Ethan gagged for a bit, letting the fluid out of his body. He really resented the feeling as the jello-like substance went back up his esophagus. After his lungs were completely emptied, he still felt the layer of residual slime in his throat. "We need to go to the bar or something. I need a drink. Plus we can catch the news of what's happened there." The two made their way to the nearest port bar. The dock was crowded, to say the least, with Belters. All of them sported skin suits: skin-tight space suits with a metal ring around the neck for a fishbowl helmet to screw into and various hard plastic covers on important body parts. Of course, none of them had their helmets on while inside the pressurized area. Every single Belter had different designs on his or her suit; stickers, paints, inks, etc covered any given skin suit. Ethan ordered a scotch, downed it in one gulp, then ordered another. He asked the bartender if he could change the television channel to the news feed. "-has been beaten back by a combined effort of Earth and Luna forces," the reporter said, the TV flipping on while he was in mid-sentence. "However, the attack has left the blue planet's satellite and major shipyard heavily crippled. Because the Martians are known to use cloning technology, we can only assume that another attack is imminent. "The Belter government has declared its neutrality in the war. However, there is the growing fear that Mars may try to recapture its former colonists, now that a more belligerent man leads the planet. General Zheng has also formally declared war on the Earth Alliance, though has not said anything regarding the Union of Free Traders."

"Oh good, now it's formal," Hex said sarcastically.
He tried to order a drink, but sadly the Belters didn't have anything of Earth origin -- only a few drinks made in vats out in space. They were... odd. He vaguely wondered why they didn't add gravity plating, to allow for a more... cultured taste. He shrugged, swishing the drink about like a mouth wash, then swallowed it. It was too expensive to waste, and slightly spicy. He'd get used to it.
He turned to Ethan, "So what do you think we should do next?" he asked curiously; he didn't have any plans about it himself. "I don't personally think we should get involved, and after the stunts we pulled on the moon, we're probably outlawed. Both on Mars and on Earth."

Aidan had never actually been inside a port city -- his mother had always told him never to go to port cities. He looked around to see a strange class of people with weird items on their clothes. When he noticed a dimly lit bar, he decided to ask around where the mayor or ruler of this colony stayed.
The first thing that caught his eye wasn’t the strange drinks; it was a man with a Death to Christ t-shirt. He walked over to the man and asked in a soft voice, "Excuse me sir, could you help me out?"
