MAFIA III
WELCOME THREAD
I. INTRODUCTION
Okay, Photu I am not. But this is his baby. Mafia is up for its THIRD outing, and you’re along for the ride.
This game has a slightly different premise than the last two: In this one, a small Greek village has formed around a mysterious catacomb. Though unaware of its secrets, it still changes their day to day lives. Occasionally, people will awaken in a new home, and a totally new role in life. They roll with these changes.
Against this backdrop, a sinister organization has arisen. Hoping to use the power of this artifact to rule the world, this primitive mafia is hoping to kill off all of the innocents, and claim it for themselves.
The goal of each side is to destroy the other and survive this nightmare.
II. VOCABULARY
A brief vocabulary lesson to clarify the terms ahead: “Day” and “night” refer to the 24 hour periods, not regular days and nights. “Role” indicates a player’s powers, but “alliance” simply denotes whether they’re on the side of the Mafia or of the Innocents. “Townsperson” and “townspeople” refer to all the players in the game, and shouldn’t be confused with “Innocents”. “Real-time day” means our standard 24-hour period, regardless of whether it’s day or night within the game.

Below is the complete list of characters taking part in this Mafia game.

There is no replacement voters. If you fail to vote, then it is unfortunate for you, but you do not count. That will greatly simplify voting for us all.
IV. BOARDS
This board is where the bulk of the game will take place. I will create a new topic for each day, where accusations, voting, and the execution will take place. You are welcome to create your own topics on this board, as long as they pertain to the Mafia game.
Mafia members, PM me your Mafia execution votes, and if you wish to have anything stated to all Mafia members, say ALL: and then the message you want them given. That way, the Godfather will have less worries about accidentally being revealed.
The topic “The Shop” is for item purchases. All new games will be accompanied by the creation of a new topic.
The topic “The Cemetery” is for dead characters to discuss the game. Dead characters may not participate in the voting topics or games; unless otherwise specified, they may only post in the Cemetery and out-of-game topics. Channelers may grant one deceased person per every two days the opportunity to vote in a town election.
V. THE DAY/NIGHT CYCLE
Mafia rotates on a day/night cycle, with different events taking place on each. For the convenience of this online community where nobody’s schedule matches up precisely, this game of Mafia will allow no less than 24 hours for each day and 24 hours for each night. I will signal the beginning of a new day by creating a new topic for it on this board; at the beginning of each night, I will lock that topic.
A number of things occur during the day:
Immediately, if there has been a consensus among the Mafia the previous night, their choice of victim is murdered. However, if the Doctor successfully guessed which Innocent was chosen by the Mafia, the Innocent does not die. If the Veteran was chosen by the Mafia (and not rescued by the Doctor), both the Veteran and the appropriate Mafia member(s) die. If the Vigilante successfully fired an arrow at a Mafia member, that Mafia member dies. If the Thief successfully pulled off a burglary the previous night, an item is awarded to the Thief. If a resurrection/Unicorn Horn was used at any point in the night, the targeted character is now resurrected.
That will all make a heck of a lot more sense once you read the next section.
For the rest of the day, surviving members must make accusations and vote for an execution. Players must participate in the day’s game. Any player may purchase an item at the Shop, or PM me choosing a target for a resurrection.
A number of things occur during the night:
Immediately, if there has been a consensus among the townspeople the previous day, their choice of suspect is executed. If a resurrection was used at any point in the day, the targeted character is now resurrected.
For the rest of the night, Mafia members must confer via PMing me to select a victim. The Doctor (or anybody using a Healing Elixir) may PM me selecting a player to protect. The Detective may PM me selecting a player whose alliance will be revealed. The Vigilante may PM me selecting a player to fire his or her arrow at. The Thief may PM me selecting a player to attempt to rob. Any player may purchase an item at the Shop, or PM me choosing a target for a resurrection, freeze or shield.
VI. ROLES
The following characters appear in Mafia III:
MAFIA –These are the villains. These evil people want to use the powers of the ruins to dominate the world.
Godfather – A special Mafia Member. The Godfather’s dealings in the underworld are so well-concealed by his/her network of minions that the Godfather always appears innocent to any investigation. Should the Detective ask the Host about the Godfather’s alliance, the Host is required to say that he or she is an Innocent. As they are the head honcho, not only do they know who their fellow Mafia members are, but also their roles. For the purpose of Mafia votes, their vote counts twice. When everybody switches roles, the Godfather is so entrenched in evil and deceit that they retain their role unless choosing to pass it up. The godfather receives 15 Drachma at the end of every day.
Bodyguard –In charge of warding off unwanted do-gooders, they are particularly skilled in combat. They may PM the Host once per night a player they decide to protect. If that player is targeted by the Vigilante’s arrow, or would be killed by the Veteran or somebody using a Wooden Sword, they instead survive.
Infiltrator –This charismatic individual has been chosen by the Mafia to be their mole, their secret agent. With their Mafia resources, they can replicate many skills like other roles in the game. They show up innocent when queried by the detective. Once per game, they may grant an extra vote like the Gilded Tongue. Once per game they may reduce the votes against them received like the Farmer, and may reduce the weight of their vote by one like the Farmer twice per game. They may block role changes like the Channeler twice per game, though only one role change at a time. They may save like a Doctor/Bodyguard once per game, and may Craft like a Craftsman, though only Extra Votes and Healing Elixirs. They may resurrect one person per game. All of these abilities are per game, and not renewed when the role changes hands. If the Infiltrator is the last Mafia member left alive, they may choose to surrender by PMing the moderator. In which case, they receive winning EP like a dead innocent.
Graverobber- This sleazy individual lurks in the shadows of the graveyard, waiting for his chance to strike. Whenever anybody dies, the Graverobber receives a list of their items. They may choose one type of item, and they receive the player’s full stock of that item. They may choose to forgo items and take 30 drachma instead. If an individual has less than 30 drachma when stolen from, they are put into the negative drachmas (debt).
Necromancer-A master of the dark arts, and one of the mafia’s most dreaded members. Once per game, they may resurrect one Mafia member. In addition, their votes count as being worth two votes for Mafia execution votes after they have expended the resurrection.
Innocents-The reluctant heroes. They hope to survive and overcome the villainy of the Mafia.
Doctor – The champion of the Innocents. The Doctor has the power to rescue assassination targets from the brink of death. Every night, the Doctor may PM the Host naming a player to protect. If that player is the one the Mafia Members selected, the player isn’t killed after all.
Detective – Prowling in the shadows, the Detective has arrived in town to sniff out the Mafia. Every night, the Detective may PM the Host to enquire about the alliance (not specific role) of any player. The Host will reply naming the player’s alliance. Unless the player is of a role that states otherwise, the host will bet truthful.
Vigilante – A master archer from foreign wars, they lurk around the town with their mighty bow at the ready.Once throughout the course of the game, the Vigilante may PM the Host during the night naming a player to fire an arrow at. If the player turns out to be a Mafia member, he or she is killed the following morning. If the player turns out to be an Innocent, the arrow misses and the incident is not mentioned the following morning. The vigilante may accidentally kill suspicious individuals that they target. They never change roles due to their steadfast hearts, unless they choose to change their role at the time of the switch. They may gain more shots by winning or finding Spare Arrows around the town.
Brewer – The Brewer is a good-natured soul who toils on the outskirts of the town. Unfortunately, he/she has become the scapegoat in light of recent events, quick to be accused by the more sophisticated townspeople. If the Detective asks the Host about the alliance of the Miller, the Host is obligated to say that he or she is a Mafia Member. The Brewer may be killed by the Vigilante. Though in a high risk position, it IS very lucrative. The Brewer earns 20 drachma at the end of every day. In addition, they brew potent wine. Once per day, they may name a player. If that player votes in the Mafia vote that night, they are considered extremely inebriated, and their vote counts as being 1 less. (If they are the only voting Mafia member, their vote still counts for executing.) If the Brewer is the last innocent left alive, they will be notified, and may surrender to the Mafia like the Infiltrator surrender.
Thief – Although he may be a criminal, he’s no Mafia member, and is as liable a target for assassination as any other. The roguish Thief makes a business out of burglary, stealing into others’ homes in the dead of night and snatching their goods. Every night, the Thief may PM the Host naming a player to rob. If the burglary is successful, the Thief gains one item from the player’s inventory. The thief comes up as Mafia when queried by the detective, and may be killed by the Vigilante. If attempting to steal from the Veteran or somebody using the Wooden Sword, they are killed. They receive per game:
2 Flawless Heists: If using this at night, they steal the highest priced item that an individual owns. They may not be killed, and are immune to Vigilante shots the night that they use this theft.
4 Heists: The thief receives a randomly determined item from the inventory of the target player.
5 Hasty Heists: The thief receives a randomly selected item. They have a small chance at failing.
3 Money Heists: The thief steals a random amount of drachma between 30 and 100. This may put the target into debt.
6 Trifling Heist: This is the same as the Hasty Heist, but fails half of the time.
Marketeer – This individual controls the stocking of the local store. Every night, they PM the host, naming one of the following to add to the store’s stock. Once they die, the store stops restocking. If they die, the item they tried to stock is instead given to the first Mafia member to vote that night.
*2 Healing Elixirs
*5 Extra Votes
*1 Superb Marionette
*1 Unicorn Horn
Chronomancer – A mystical practicioner of Time Magic, aware of all of the secrets of the ruins. They do not change roles. Once every three days, they may PM the host the name of a player, alive or dead. That player may not post at all in the Mafia forums or take ANY kind of game action at all for two phases. (A phase is a 24 hour period, like a day, or a night) In addition, that character may not be executed. They are treated as being removed from reality during this time.
Veteran –A master of swordplay, returning from wars far away. Though they may be killed, they also are capable of defending themselves from their foes. If, on a particular night, the Mafia Members decide to assassinate this player, then both the Veteran and the last Mafia Member to agree on the victim will be destroyed. If one or more Mafia members fails to vote, one of them is randomly selected and killed. If the thief steals from the veteran, they may be killed.
Channeler- A master magician when it comes to the human soul. Once per every three days, they may have a dead player participate in the normal town vote as if they were alive, without resurrecting the member, by PMing the host. When it comes time for a regular role change, they may name two roles that will not be changed. (They must use one on themselves to maintain their role). In addition, they may transfer one posting requirement from one living/dead member to another one at this time.
Craftsman- A master of creating many varieties of tools and items. They can create any item except for peeks inside Pandora’s box by PMing the Host. A number of phases equal to the item’s cost divided by 10 later, they receive the item.
Phoenix- Once per game, when this player is killed, they return to life as if resurrected the following morning.
Farmer-This townsperson is slightly less sane than the others. Due to this, they are taken very lightly. Their normal vote counts for one less vote than normal. In addition, when they are voted for, they are treated as receiving one less vote than they really did (Mafia and town votes.) Finally, they receive 5 drachma at the end of every day.
Gilded Tongue-This person has INCREDIBLE charisma and talent. Once per day, they may PM the host, declaring a person. That person’s vote counts as being worth 1 more during all votes they participate in until the next morning. In addition, they pay only 80% of the normal cost for all items.
Miracle Worker- This priest channels divine might to undo the dark deeds of the night. They may resurrect people twice per game by PMing the host at night. In the morning, the selected person is resurrected.
In addition, the Miracle Worker, Phoenix, and Doctor know who each other are, and the Farmer, Marketeer, and Craftsman know who each other are.
VII. EXECUTION
Quoted from Photu for truthfulness and no change.
During the night, Mafia Members convene in private to kill off an Innocent. Okay, swell. But during the daytime, all the townspeople gather to execute one of their own. And this is where half the excitement of Mafia lies. You see, it’s no fun just to submit bland little votes for people and kill them off. Pfft! If any of you have encountered the game in real life, it was probably within some sort of theatre context, and executions are precisely the reason for that. Compare:
I vote for Prime.
VOTE: Prime
Alongside:
I think Prime did it. I saw him checking out that library book about medieval weaponry. Dead giveaway! Who else here would even KNOW how to operate a crossbow? I sure don’t.
VOTE: Prime
You’re all RPers, heck, you’re probably even better at this stuff than I would be. I want to see real accusations. Make up bizarre motives, or come up with weird circumstances that just happen to lead your target to the scene of the crime. Watch as Prime comes up with a legitimate defense:
It was for my Dungeons & Dragons campaign! I wanted to make an all-new divine weapon and I thought it’d be better to draw on actual history as my source. Look, Cinders does D&D with me, she can back me up on this! And besides, how do you expect me to own an authentic crossbow? You’d have to be rich to get your hands on something like that. As rich as… say… Paul…
VOTE: Paul
This is crucial, guys. We’re not a big crowd. If this game is going to be interesting, you’ve got add some flavor to the accusations and counteraccusations. Take away that psychological aspect and you’ve just got a bunch of people jumping on a bandwagon. Dull.
At the end of each day, I’ll tally up the results and the majority vote will prevail. I assume each player will chip in with at least one vote, but the more the better. You can change your vote over the course of the day as you like; your final post will be the one considered definitive.
NEW LEE HAWTNESS: When using Extra Votes, state that you are. Votes with Extra vote look like this.
EXTRA VOTE:
You may use two per vote. Any abilities that state they change a vote’s worth affect their normal vote, and is not stated publicly.
VIII. DRACHMA AND ITEMS
Items are purchased through the use of Drachma. The Drachma will be awarded as prizes for a series of games I will run during the day. I’ll give no further detail of these games at the moment. But I will list the Drachma-to-item ratio.
1 Drachma = 2 EP. At the end of the game, you will be able to convert all of your remaining Drachma into EP.
10 Drachma = 1 extra vote. Use them simply by stating in a vote: EXTRA VOTE:. They may be used separate from your normal vote.
40 Drachma =1 Wooden Sword. This item grants you the defensive effect of being a Veteran for the night after you use it. The Veteran doubles their effect by using it.
50 Drachma =1 Healing Elixir. After using this item, a player may save like the Doctor or Bodyguard for the following night. A Doctor/Bodyguard gets an additional save attempt.
200 Drachma= Superb Marionette. This puppet is indistinguishable from the owner. It is discarded in place of the owner’s life if the owner would be executed.
250 Drachma = 1 resurrection. If you own a resurrection, you can PM me during the day or night and select a dead player on whom to use it. You obviously cannot select yourself, because you would have to be dead. At the end of that day/night, the targeted player will return from the Cemetery and be allowed to participate in the game again.
300 Drachma= Spare Arrow. This is another shot for the vigilante.
RANDOM Drachma= Peek Inside Pandora’s Box. The player may use this item to enter the ruins, and triggers a random effect, some insanely good. (700 Drachma, Invincibility for 4 phases) Some, insanely bad (Player automatically dies, etc.)
You can give items to other players, but (unless you’re the Merchant) at a rate of only one item per 24-hour period. If you wish to give an item to another player, PM me and I will carry out the transaction. Tell me as well whether you wish to give the item anonymously or with your name.
You must purchase items by posting at the Shop. This means other players will be able to track the items you have bought. However, the number of Drachma you own and your total inventory at any one time is kept secret. Every time your Drachma count and/or inventory changes, I will PM you informing you of your current Drachma count and inventory.
IX. PRIZES
Prizes will be administered in the following way:
Whenever the Doctor successfully saves a player, the Doctor receives 50 Drachma. Whenever the Vigilante successfully kills a Mafia member, the Vigilante receives 50 Drachma.
All surviving players at the end of the game receive an equal share of an EP pot containing 150 EP times the number of real-time days the game has taken. And, of course, all players have the opportunity to exchange their remaining Drachma for EP when the game is over. You can also trade your unused items back for a full Drachma refund, whereupon you can convert the Drachma into EP.
X. Body Switching
After three day/night phases, the catacombs open, and the players all switch roles, barring the ones chosen by the Channeler, and the set roles (Godfather, Vigilante, Chronomancer). The roles are simply traded. All inventory remains the same. If a player is killed, their role is removed from the Role pool.
XI. HONESTY
This is pretty vital, for obvious reasons. I already wrote this general blurb in the previous Mafia game, so there’s really no need to reiterate it. All the same:
I’m trusting that you won’t PM, email, or in other way contact other players revealing your role, alliance or sensitive information, whether or not you are still alive. Needless to say, I’m also trusting you won’t reveal any of that on the actual boards. However, in the Cemetery, dead players may freely reveal their alliance – but not their specific role.
I'm also trusting that you won't PM each other strategizing about the games. A lot of them will be quite easy to ruin if the players talk to each other privately. We Can't Have That.
Again, I don’t think there’s any need to stress this point. We’re all good people here, and cheating = less fun for all.
XI. YOUR MISSION
I’ll put these in big ol’ Impact font so’s you can’t miss ‘em, y’hear?
CHECK YOUR INBOX NOW. You have been private messaged with your role and responsibilities.
OPEN A BOX IN THE BOX GAME THREAD! Go there. You can get free items and love.
JUST GENERALLY CHECK THE HELL OUT OF YOUR INBOX AS WELL AS THIS BOARD! Setting your inbox to give you a popup every time you receive a PM is a really good idea.
PLEASE INFORM ME OF ANY ISSUES. Between first and second editions, we've ironed out most of the bugs, but I really think that it will help balance it with player input.
HAVE FUN. I’m admin. If you don’t have fun, I ban you. No, just kidding. *clears throat and points to ban-hamma* Now, go, enjoy yourself!
POHATU EDIT: Fixed a few size inconsistencies in "Your Mission".
