Temporarily, we are trying a proboard affiliated chatroom in place of the shoutbox. Though a wee bit slower loading, it covers the problems that the Shoutbox had, namely Advertising, Non-autorefreshing, and always revealing member names. It DOES lack the matching color scheme and current screen names, but it's kinda one of those give and take things.
Others, voice your opinions. Baboon, still causing freezes there?

It appears to load properly. However, I don't like the format of it. It's basically a messenger chat room instead of what we had before. It looks as though every time you go to the main page, you have to sign in again. This is not good. Furthermore, one of the things that made the first shoutbox good was that not everyone had to be on at once. You could just see any older messages. I don't quite know if that's the case here. From just looking at it, I'd expect this only shows any messages since you've signed in, not everything.

Yeah, it's worse than I thought it would be. As it's affiliated to Proboards, they played it up to be good. I'll give it tonight, 11:00 PM to prove itself. And retreat to Shoutbox if it fails.

I liked the old thingy... But this is also good, since if a few members come on at once, we can yell at each other and stuffs. Woo yelling. ^^

Yeah, function-wise, this thing is about a 60/100 while the shoutbox was like 70/100. They function, but they both have NASTY flaws.
Ideally, we'd be able to code up some miraculous chat thingy, but no idea who would be willing to do that.

You're comparing two different things entirely. The current shoutbox is basically only a chat for those signed in at the same time. The previous one was like... a noteboard or something. There's not often enough people signed in at once to make this one worthwhile. I'd much rather deal with ads than a chat that doesn't maintain a continuous presence and logging.
Edit: After using it for a number of hours, it's not that bad... My issues with it: ~It resets every time you move to a different page, thus requiring you to leave it in its own window if you want to stay in the chat. ~Also, out of this, it doesn't log everything. If there is a way to get it to do so, that would be good. ~NAME SELECTION. Since it's not linked to your actual account, you can tell it you're anything you want. This lends itself to people pretending they're someone else. Clearly, this is a bad idea.
But yeah, live chat is a good idea... It just needs to borrow some of the original shoutbox's positive aspects.

I think that we will go back to the shoutbox, then, and save the code for this chat to be popped into the main page for a chatroom, as it is a fairly functional chat. Can I get a second for that motion?

Why not set up a IRC chatroom instead? Easy to use, you register a name on the server so people can't impersonate and the operators of the chat room keep things in order.
I'd be happy to set one up if you need me too.

Hmmm... How is it for load times? Because the last chat thingy really murdered our load times for the main page, and the shoutbox, although faster, also did have some little problems where it would block people from loading the boards entirely.

IRC would be a seperate page thingy, right? I wasn't aware that you could embed them... But then again, I rarely used IRC.

IRC is an entirely seperate program for which you need an entirely seperate program to run. Sadly, the best of those programs require you to pay for them (Ircle) among other things. Also, you have to know the IP address of the chatroom your trying to connect to, ect ect. I'm trying to get this stupid chatbox we currently have to load in a different window, to solve the loggin when changin pages problem...But I don't know where the hell Lee stuck the code -_-

Well, that's why I use Firefox with Firebug. All I do is open up my Firebug console, click "inspect" and hover over the java app, and voila, it's highlighted in the source code. Really quite convenient for hacking.
