Just out of curiosity, what programs do you two use for 3D modeling? Usually Blender3D to do my modelling and rendering. The interface is really not intuitive, but once you memorize some important hotkeys (and if you use your right hand for the mouse) you can model really fast, because the hotkeys were specifically made for the user to keep their left hand on the left side of the keyboard. It's a free download, too. Some models I use Wings3D, because it does have an intuitive interface, and is much easier to use than Blender. However, it only makes models, but blender is able to import them, so you can apply textures, mess with the environment, etc. (also free download) For 2D and texture-making, Photoshop CS2. Also use it to touch up renders.

Wings is vastly superior for simple modeling, but falls short for things like human-form modeling and animation. If you want to screw around with starships, cars, boats, guns, ect, wings is a great tool. But otherwise, you'll want to look at blender, no matter how daunting it may be.
