I know many of you have just recently heard of Nelly Furtado thanks to her new single "Promiscuous." I have news for you: that ain't Nelly.
That's soulless plastic referred to as Nelly Furtado. The real Nelly Furtado wouldn't dare be associated with that bubblegum top 40 shit.
The real Nelly Furtado was poetic and soulful, with a beautiful voice. This new incarnation is nothing but a mass-marketed MTV slave. Does it tell you anything that the song is called "Promiscuous"? No? Wanna read the lyrics?
(BTW, I'm convinced that anything Timbaland touches becomes tainted. He lent a hand with Utada's English debut. And her English debut was less than stellar to put it nicely.
This right here is the real Nelly Furtado. Folklore was definitely her best album, and in a cruel twist of irony, her least successful. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful vocals, beautiful music as a whole. Although I do not own the album yet, I have heard several of its songs and I can say that it's some of the best music I've heard from a mainstream artist. Favorite songs are "Powerless(Say What You Want)" and "Try".
"Whoa, Nelly!", her first album, was good, don't get me wrong, but Folklore was far and above the superior album. "I'm Like A Bird" was my favorite song for quite a while back in 2000, and still is one of my favorites. "Turn Off The Light" is another one of my favorites.... It was funky without being vapid bubblegum top 40 shit.
Oh god.... Listening to "Promiscuous" again.... This is NOT Nelly Furtado. She's rapping....or something like that.....and the lyrics are such trash. Even Furtado's astounding vocals are bleh. Absolutely bleh. Did she HAVE to write such a horrible dirty-for-the-sake-of-appealing-to-the-idiotic-mass song? (Maybe she didn't write this one, which would piss me off even more) I mean, I know there's some way that you can write a poetic dirty song.... (There is, it's not impossible and you know it =P) And if anyone can create poetry, it's Nelly.
Bottom line is, I miss the old Nelly. This new one should NEVER become the image of Nelly Furtado, but sadly, this is what seems to be happening. Where is the old Nelly Furtado, the one whom I was so fond of? Who is this new impostor and why is she so fucking VAPID?!?!
(end rant)
