tl;dr I AM DROPPING THE GAUNTLET AND CHALLENGE ALL OF YOU TO WRITE 10K STORY WORDS BETWEEN DEC 15 and JAN 31
Hello everyone! It's me ch00bs your dungeon master your best friend and your internet challenge giver. It sure has been quiet around here, hasn't it? Well! That's ABOUT TO CHANGE with you and me and everyone else putting in some low key effort to get this place all lively and fun again. Tired of brooding over stupidly long posts meant to impress and wow? Exhausted from doing your 18th revision of that perfect character moment?
Efffff that
To end the year and to kick off the next strong, I propose a challenge: barf out 10k words between December 15th and January 31st in the RP or solo works or contests forums. I don't want none of that perfect beautiful prose; I want that raw first draft, where you tap into the thirteen year old you who knew that writing was fun and impulsive.
Why do this, you ask? Well, first and foremost, stories are fun. Spinning a yarn about fantastical worlds and complex characters tickles a certain something in everyone. The problem is that, IMO, over the years, we've gotten too good at this and have started aiming to impress rather than to entertain. There's nothing wrong with that, mind you, but doing multiple drafts and plotting crazy twists means more thinking and less doing, leading to the current state of the forums.
Secondly, I think it's a good goal. A lot of us have crazy lives now, but having a concrete goal makes it easier to carve that hour or two a day to just flow with some words. And knowing that this is everyone else's goal also means the stakes are explicitly set somewhere attainable.
And if those two reasons were not enough, thirdly, I'm gonna hand out a real, physical prize. If you make it to 10k words by January 31st, I'll put your name into a virtual hat* and whoever gets drawn will receive a Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen and a bunch of spare ink cartridges that i have lying around.
* the virtual hat is literally going to be >>> import random; random.choice(['your', 'names', 'here'])
So! Let's start end the year and start the new one with momentum!
PS. erotica counts as words do not be shy this is a safe place accessible by all of the internet
PPS. for tracking word counts, I found this great site where you can set goals and post updates, and I encourage everyone to post screenshots of progress should they choose to accept this challenge.
PPPS. let's get interesting and incentivize reading solo works, too, by saying that critiques of solo stuff also counts toward your word counts. we love patrons of the arts
PPPPS. to sweeten the pot for MOAR WERDS, for every 5k words after your first 10k, that's another entry you get in the raffle
