Discussion thread for All the King's Men. As of this writing - Named, living male characters: Valon, Theren, Nadeshi, Edos, Dayth, Zahn, Amir, Gladdig, Vax (or Vex, I'm not sure) Named, living female characters: Opilia, Sabriel, Bebeodan, Esther, Sinda, Yhel, Lyra, Zasza, Isara, Hinankja, Amirah, Magden, Vex (or Vax, who knows) I am endlessly delighted that a story called "All the King's Men" currently features a higher female presence than male. It was cool that DL rolled with it in his last post by introducing two three new ladies.

You forgot Zasza.
Also, to set the record straight, Vex is female and Vax is male.

“And finally, I spent a term of over two hundred years in Drakengrad as a legal scribe for your court system, press-ganged into servitude by Boros Lorsha-” Bebeodan decided it was in good taste to omit the ‘may jackals feast upon his rotting bones’ she compulsively tacked on as a well-deserved honorific in any other situation, “And then liberated by your grandfather, Akamai. There is literally nobody else alive today who has as much experience with your legal system as I do.” My headcanon image for Boros Lorsha My headcanon image for Akamai Lorsha

I'm kinda loving the general tone of the Archipelago that's been evolving in the past year or so. As hinted to in a few things I've said, and beautifully tied up with a ribbon by Pohatu in his last post, the Archipelago verbally has a mixture of a Japanese speech cadence with American bluntness. Furthermore, society has this interesting situation where Archipelago has a touch of Japanese politeness/hospitality when dealing with strangers... That quickly gives way to American Northeast level bluntness and impoliteness once you're more than acquaintances. Really helps give me a feel for how to write NPCs and Archipelago natives in general. (Granted, I don't have many Archipelago natives? I think just Garth really fits that profile, while Emma Ray Jo comes from an outlier rural community, and Thyra and Dalisay were both raised to be very polite and well-behaved no matter who they dealt with.) (I still haven't decided if Nat's an Archipelago native or an American)

"The French words for lawyer and avocado are essentially the same (avocat). Hilarity ensues when translating French recipes for guacamole into English using computer software—they end up instructing you to do things like "chop up three lawyers and then put them in a blender"." If there's ever an Ishkabibble scenario for Bebeodan, I'm totally naming it "French Guacamole".

Oh, so I guess since it's about to become relevant again, I'm gonna take this opportunity to clarify that I'm retconning my entry in Crystal Pt. 2. So Hector and Pleiades were never there, and Marina never existed (therefore Nadeshi never married.) All of those things are so dumb why did I even write that
UPDATE: I was in it for all of one post?? That's even dumber but I guess it makes it super easy to retcon

I've got to admit, I have mixed feelings upon rereading this post. It seems clear that Theren is being set up as "the guy we don't agree with/root for", and Yhel definitely has the high ground over him in terms of caring about the common people. But on the other hand, both Yhel and Lyra trot out variations on the argument "We do what the Highlord says, End Of Story", and the bleeding-heart anti-monarchy liberal in me says that that's a premise worth questioning and criticizing instead of just accepting as right. They're unwittingly pointing to a fault in monarchy that exists even when your king is trying hard to be a good ruler. So I can't quite go along automatically with them either. This RP has already brought up some really interesting themes and I'm getting pretty stoked for it.

Irrelevant (maybe?) to the post above, but I think I finally know how we're gonna set Nadeshi apart from Valon: where Valon is cold, aloof, and willing to be ruthless (at least in his position as king), Nadeshi is gentle and very empathetic and idealistic. Nadeshi never wants to resort to brute force to resolve conflicts. He would much rather do the problem-solving to work it out through peaceful, diplomatic means.
Reading through some non-RP material helped me come to this conclusion. Let's do more of this stuff in the future. It helps me understand stuff better because sometimes I just can't absorb something through reading a story post alone.
(Added note, the majority of my characters fall under the NF category?? I emotionally click better with NF types I guess)
ETA: Another interesting contrast between Drakengrad and Kalar that I have just noticed: Drakengrad's gates are open to visitors; Kalar is notoriously closed off from the rest of the world. No one gets in, hardly anyone ever ventures out. They're super protective of their homeland and their culture, so they don't want someone coming in and ruining all of that by telling them what to do.

Hey, I just realized, Tris Bentha is "the second son of Jhan and Sinda". Does that mean Sinda Solidad?
Because if so, then based on her behavior onscreen, she's taken the death of her son, uh, remarkably well. Either she must have the poker face to end all poker faces, or there must be something culturally different here about deaths in the family that's specific to Drakengrad. Whatever's going on, I hope that gets touched on in-story. Or was it a different Sinda?

It's two different Sindas. Sinda is basically the Drakengrad equivalent of Kelly or Ashley, they're fucking everywhere.
I'll throw this out there now and see what comes of it. There are two major easter eggs in King's Men so far that people could pick up on if they so put their mind to it. One is a direct tie to something in the topic, the other ties to another thread that heavily features Valon.
Happy hunting.

Oh please, you got to give us more of a hint than that! Does the easter egg for this story have to do with names and is that why you brought it up now? Or was it apropos of nothing?

Post by AngelicTragedy on Apr 28, 2016 15:19:00 GMT -5
It has everything to do with names. The cross topic one is pretty obvious once you find it relating to one of the characters in Kings Men. The second one I may have to explain something for you to find.
It's not uncommon for Aldra-Sa to discard their first names while in military service and go only by their last names.

Well the cross-topic one could just be the fact that Sinda Solidad shows up in Crystal 2. That's not much of an easter egg though, you must have meant something more obscure.

Kinda pinned it down right there, sir. Marius' sister has now been seen in two different threads.
I forgot that there was this fact in there, so I guess there are three easter eggs now.
So, post is in the works but it has been slow going since I caught the painting bug. Hopefully I'll be done for a May 1st post.

I've even displeased the faith by refusing to turn over Sabriel to the Daughters of Sari'n. You see, it's tradition for the first born daughter of the royal family to be given to the Daughters as a gift Aou'n. They live their lives in service to the Goddess and have no dealings with the rule or law of Drakengrad as they serve a higher power. I couldn't part with Sabriel, and Opillia threatened me if I even thought about it, which I never would. I gifted a grand palace called Golden Grove to the Daughters in place of Sabriel, which they accepted. Rolling up my sleeves. This looks like a really promising plot point.

Silumas , and anyone else: It's probably too late as of DL's latest post to join as one of Valon's guests, but Drakengrad has plenty of room for more nobles, soldiers, commoners, etc. It's a big city and there are a lot of possible angles to explore. I bet if you dropped DL a line you could work something out!

I could use a few warm bodies for some NPC work that could evolve into your own personal characters. You'll be seeing some of that in the future for sure.

I'm still feeling out the difference between Blaise and Bebeodan. It's a tricky balance- I think the key is Blaise doesn't understand social graces at all, whereas Bebeodan DOES understand them, but only as a completely academic field of study. I think it's key for me to hash out how their dialogue differs as well- I'm feeling like Bebe tends to say things in a very convoluted and tricky way, but uses much simpler words, whereas Blaise should have very simple sentence structure, but use ten-dollar words like she'd been locked in a room with only dictionary for company for twenty years.
