So here we'll be gathering the info to have a pronunciation guide in the ORP Reference topic. If there's a name you want to know how to say, please request so that we can get it in here.
To start: Nopcsa: NOP-cha
Rhys: "Reese", like "geese". Maybe a SLIGHT H sound, like "Rheese"?

Oh my god, "cha", I never would have thought of that.
I'm actually curious about the pronunciation of "Valon" because I keep going back and forth on whether the vowels are closer to "talon" or to "Balon (Greyjoy)".
Dunno if there's much confusion about the pronunciation of my cast names, though "Keigler" is tricky, I guess. Never completely nailed down whether I mentally pronounce it as "Keegler", "Kaygler", or "Kyegler".

Yeah, Nopcsa's a Romanian name, apparently. So it's quite... out there compared to a lot of what we know.

i've been pronouncing it nop-ska even though the letters aren't even in that order
Ysane is ee-sahn/-eh in case that was ambiguous. Taruic is tar-wick/.

I've been pronouncing it exactly as awkwardly as it's spelled. Like Nopxa.

I'm gonna wager that I'm gonna have the most names out here. (that's what you get when you insist on making all your characters from made-up places and then try to make up names for them in their made-up languages)
Vathalé Mekranti: as we said in the shoutbox, surprise, the 'th' is voiced!! it would be pronounced vah-THAH-le, with that 'th' said as in 'this' where it's closer to a D sound if you're not a linguistics nerd, and as a 'voiced dental fricative' if you are Pohatu and you are a linguistics nerd. though even in universe i'm sure no one really knows (or cares) so most english speakers probably pronounce the 'th' like in 'thorn' in an unvoiced manner anyway. so idk!
we haven't even gotten to the last name yet. (it's may-KRAN-tee) not-so-fun fact: it was originally rendered as 'Mejkranti' before I decided that it looked bad and stupid and so I dropped the J before anyone could notice. Back when I first introduced Vathalé I was saying that J like in 'jump' as a palato-alveolar affricate, but then I started learning Swedish and started saying it as a much more elegant-sounding palatal approximant and then decided the J wasn't needed. shrug

for the record, I think I was closest to the target on Nopcsa because I was saying it 'NOP-sha'

I've been pronouncing it exactly as awkwardly as it's spelled. Like Nopxa. TBH, that's how I pronounced it until like 2012, when I pulled aside my former pastor (a Romanian) and asked him how to properly say it.

Important question for the topic proper: Do we want to use phonetic spellings in English, or do we want to use IPA, or do we want to do something else? I'm neutral but I think Pohatu and Loogs could have important opinions on this.

see the thing about IPA is you kind of have to be fluent in IPA to use it effectively. it's really a language of its own. that being said, remember that I didn't actually study linguistics in school so I'm not familiar with all of the jargon exactly.
as much as I love the standardization that IPA brings I think it'll just be easier for everyone here if we stick to phonetic English spelling.

while i've done some light studying of the IPA's mechanics, i do not have any part of it memorized so i'd prefer english phonemes
i do like the words "fricative" and "plosive" tho

Valon is pronounced like the word 'talon' or if you will 'Avalon' minus the a. At one point I thought about changing it to be more inline with Balon Greyjoy but he'd always been set up the other way in my mind and it didn't feel right.

Okay... here's my bit on how to pronounce my main peeps' names, etc. Something to keep in mind with a lot of my stuff: things that look Japanese aren't always pronounced the same (esp. if anything Nintaku related; their language looks Japanese when written out in English, but can be pronounced differently and hold different meaning than any real words they resemble).
Nintaku = "Nin Tah-Koo" (like Otaku mixed with Nintendo; originated from an old term used for anime geeks who only love Nintendo games)
Kara = Like "Carla" minus the L (just wanted to make sure folks didn't think I said it like "CARE-Uh")
Serpentei = "Sir Pen-Tae" (long "A" sound on the end bit, not "eye") ~ Kinkaryoh = "Kin Kah-Ree-O"
Sagami = "Suh Gah-Mee" (one of the few characters who's name is pronounced the same in Japanese)
Drakyan = "Druh Kai-En" (they tend to use the letter "Y" pronounced as "eye" a lot; like "Ai" in Japanese)
Nagisa = "Nah Gee-Suh" (first bit slightly like "Gnaw") ~ Ethra'fel = "Eh-Thruh Fell" (rhymes with "Ezra Fell"...LOL) ~ Davarrin = "Duh Varr-In"
...And if anyone wants me to explain anything else (like names of places I've mentioned, etc.), I can easily tell ya via PMs whenever needed. Just thought it would be fun to let ya know how my mains had their names and races pronounced, since I've had these characters the longest of all and you guys have known the most.
