So I've been mentioning this in shoutbox a bunch and realized it's kinda silly that I never linked it and turned it into a proper discussion. Here is a playlist for Sanderson's lecture on making a good characterI think that's the most relevant to most of us since we're all about the characters here, but the rest of his lectures are nice (same channel should have them all) Biggest things I've taken away from all this is 1) make your characters proactive and 2) ask yourself "what would this character be doing if the plot didn't hit them in the face?" Also, highly recommend watching the Sanderson's Laws vids or just read the tvtropes page which really helps with making powers that don't feel like bullshit.

Fun trivia bit! Zebedee's middle name is Sanderson, but named after Ivan Sanderson, cryptozoologist, instead of this Sanderson guy. (Zebedee Sanderson Taylor has a surprisingly nice ring to it for a name I came up with 14 years ago) (And yes, I'd planned on Lee's real name being Zebedee even back when I first created him in seventh grade! I just had planned on him using the Lee pseudonym in perpectuity. : 3 )
Also, poorly understood wishy washy magic can only create conflicts applies surprisingly well to Fairly Odd Parents and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Wat.

He has a lecture on kid fiction, young adult fiction, and actual adult fiction. Basically boils down to word count and plot complexity, but the rules still apply.
Also if you do not know this Sanderson, I highly recommend Mistborn. One of the most brilliant magic systems I've read and also one of the more unique fantasy settings I've seen. Beautiful fight choreography, too. Bonus points for a lady protagonist who kicks ass.
PS. Also his lecture on fight scenes

Yeah he has A TON of philosophies that made me go "ARE YOU ME? ?" or anyone else on this forum. Probably why I watched mot of those 78 videos. PS. part two of the fight scene lecture TL;DW "be short, brief, and clear" PPS. I forgot about pt 3 which is probably the most important one

I should force every new writer to watch this series... I was working on an article about this very problem. Fight scenes for the sake of fight scenes are wasteful within a narrative.

I'm going to use this thread as a dumping ground for interesting writing related podcasts/videos I find. Everyone else, feel free to dump fun resources as well. Shakespeare and Dragons, a podcast geared toward dungeon masters for creating worlds that your players actually get invested in at a story level. Still on episode 2, but there's some interesting things in there.
