So, anywho, I was talking with Cendra, and realized that my rips were really harshing my RP buzz. As I didn't own the idea proper for certain characters, I didn't feel like I could truly write them and be happy with myself.
Said characters were:
Pablo (Noki, a ripped race)
Miko (Bagan, Mogu, and Dogolas are varying degrees of rips)
Maude (AYG is a rip. Caladrius is straight mythology though.)
Tsubota (Akki Kumo is a rip.)
Elm (Straight up rip.)
So my solutions are as follows:
Elm: Boxed for good. No more Elm. If he's ever needed as an NPC, that's the only time I'll run him. Everybody say goodbye to Professor Elm!
Maude: I've already started de-ripping AYG by turning it from an abreviation to a name (Ayg). I'm thinking I'll develop it later on with some growing and such into its own creature, keeping only the hydra with wings thing from Ghidrah. Caladrius is happy and fine.
Miko: Summoner Style will deal with most of this.
Tsubota: Not telling yet, but there'll be some changes.
Pablo: I've decided to do away with him being a Noki. It really clashes horribly with modern day ORP. I'm still going to maintain his status as a nonhuman tho'. I'm thinking that instead of Isle Delfino, he'll have come originally from a coral reef somewhere around the Philippines. He'll belong to a race of nautiloid based beings, kinda like Nokis, but... Well, not quite so dang cutesy. And they probably would have had underwater cities of some sort, instead of the "mostly on land" deal you saw in Mario.
Imagine if you will, THIS, but with a humanoid torso instead of a squid head. The shell runs back from the body at a downwards angle, dragging on the ground when they walk on land. The cowl looking portion of shell caps their head, akind to a helmet/hood. Instead of hair, they've got short, delicate tentacles that run alongside their faces. Bits of shell armor most of their body, except for arms that are too long for their body, and sturdy, pillarlike legs.
Not sure exactly where to take the history of his people, but I'm tempted to take it in a rough direction of 'A rumored populace, like the Fae in Europe, who offer boon or misery to the humans in the area based on appeasement and following specific rules'. It would definitely line up with his skill as a caster of water magic.
With all that taken care of ideawise, the only two things left to deal with would be his beef with Miko (for destroying Delfino to subdue a new summon) and his weapon, the Shine Blade.
The first is dealt with easily enough with the simple assumption that Miko created a lot of plant matter in said fight, and that algae/seaweed he used ended up choking the life out of Pablo's reef-city.
The second? I'm thinking that it was a bolo knife (probably the Sundang, considering its use for splitting coconuts), left behind as a tribute by some people. Pablo took a liking to it, and enchanted it with a form of consciousness, making it his companion/pet.
So now, if I just make these ideas into names, I will have overhauled one of the most hokey ideas in ORP into something odd, but pretty functional from a storytelling perspective (and a much better fit for more plots, I suppose).
How about you guys? Any rips you regret? Throw them out here, and let's sort them out.
(And I'd like to keep this seperate from the other rip topic. This is dealing with redeeming poorly chosen rips, not a general discussion of them.)
