So! In this sleepless night I had an idea. I'd like to run an RP where the characters are dreaming. Now, this doesn't mean all the characters are in a dream together or something like that. This is not what I'm looking for:
My goal is to tell the dream from the character's perspective in the dream. It could be a nightmare, it could be revelatory, it could be preposterous and silly; the content doesn't really matter that much. Dreams are an area where suspension of disbelief is par for the course; when you're dreaming, everything is real and nothing is absurd. I'd encourage everyone to put their characters in situations they'd never encounter or make them behave as they never would.
I was thinking that you could bring other characters into your dream (since we often dream about people we know) and even auto them to some extent (though you'd probably want to have their owner sign off on it). I think that would add to the incredulity of it.
The knot that would tie this together would be a character I'm thinking of specifically for this RP. Basically a Sandman except, instead of putting people to sleep, he seeds dreams. (At this juncture I'd like to point out that I haven't seen Inception, nor do I know one iota about the plot other than the top probably falls at the end. Whatever that means.) By seeding dreams I mean that he is the reason for their occurrence, not for their content. Think of it as a man watching television; he turned it on and he can change the channels but, ultimately, he has no real control over what he sees other than to choose whether he sees it or not.
Now, I'm still fleshing out the format for this but what I was thinking was that it would lead off with Sandman at the character's bedside doing his thing, then the RPer has the dream, wakes up, and reflects on it as the memory disappears.
Because these dreams won't be interconnected (Even if they use the same cast of characters, none of them will actually be any of the true characters other than the one that wakes up. That character's dream-self is not their true-self.) this can have all ranges of people participate. I don't see a large problem with crossing the ORP/FRP/PRP/ETC boundaries other than I don't know much about anything outside ORP. This has an added benefit of letting new RPers who have trouble jumping into topics with established characters to flesh out their own characters some. It also lets the more seasoned RPers use their characters in ways they never could or to try a new method of storytelling that would otherwise be obtrusive or difficult to mesh with someone else's.
Any thoughts/questions on the format, the Sandman, or the idea as a whole? Anyone interested in tickling some fancies?
Lee: "Oh hey Rie."
ch00bs: "Oh hey Nat."
Lee: "Oh hi Julia."
ch00bs: "Oh hi Blaise."
Lee: "I think we might be in Terrian's dream."
ch00bs: "Why is that?"
Lee: "Because we're in his house, naked but for stilettos, and we're covered in baby oil and I have an overwhelming desire to wrestle everyone."
Potato: Everyone commences wrestling. Terrian rolls over in his sleep with a large grin on his face.
