Elm stood still, regarding the Pokemon dancing back and forth across the habitat it had been placed in. It was some new species that he had never seen before, something related to a Mantine. His heart began beating quickly again... This was a new species, not just a smaller or differently colored Pokemon. He had discovered a new species!
Elm's life hadn't been going so well recently. His wife had left him, tired of his constant obsession over his work, and had managed to receive custody not only of his daughter, but also of almost all of his Pokemon, and ownership of the house. Elm had been forced to live in the lab recently, while he looked for housing.
He quickly put all of his gear together, and got ready to go to the Pokemon center to announce this exciting news. He grabbed his last two Pokeballs, Meowth and Delibird, and darted out the door, into New Bark Town. He fumbled with his list of contacts, trying to recall the number for the Pallet Town Lab.

A rather mature 12 year old was in the pokémon center that Elm entered. Looking at the excited proffesor, Pherris walked over and tapped the mans shoulder. "E-excuse me sir..." Cracking a shy smile "Did something happen?"

"Well, young man, it's fully possible that I, the famous Professor Elm have managed to discover yet another new variety of Pokemon, unknown to mankind up until this very moment!" Elm smiled broadly, dramatically gesturing. "Now, I'm going to go place a call to Pallet Town if I could simply recall their number..." Elm rubbed at the grape soda stain on his lab coat.

Pherris couldn't help but laugh "I don't know the number either, why don't you try watching Prof. Oak's show on T.V. maybe they have a listing to call in." Pherris smiled as he pointed at the T.V in the Pokémon Center.

"Hmmm... Actually, why don't we just try going there by foot? I could use a nice adventure these days. I barely got a full quest when I was a child. I could use some more adventuring." Elm stepped outside the Pokemon center, and looked to the eastern river. "We'll just go along that bank for now."
OOC: Dunno if we're sticking with Gary's dead professor oak, replaced with Gary.

"An adventure huh? You think an old scientist like you can handle it?" Pherris said mockingly. "Well, I suppose we could follow the bank, though, all we would encounter would be water pokémon, can you handle it?"

"I've got a Meowth and a Delibird, both mid-level strength. They're good enough for this, I should hope. Otherwise, I'll be rather disappointed in myself." Elm played with the clasp on his clipboard. "Let's get going." He adventurously darted out the door, tripping on the front step and falling flat on his face.

Pherris chuckled loudly "Get up Prof. Elm..." After helping the broken Prof. up from the ground, they began their journey to Prof. Oak's. Pherris walked with Elm to the side of the water, and they began to follow it. After a few minutes Pherris sighed "This is boring, aren't we going to battle at all... I mean nothing is showing up..."

"Consider yourself lucky that nothing is showing up. I bet that the wild ones we'd see around here would be on even footing with our own parties, power-wise at least. The Pokemon around here are obscenely strong."
"Interestingly enough, New Bark Town was created as a buffer zone due to Pokemon's dislike of civilization. The founders of the town made sure that newer trainers were much safer that way, since nothing vicious from the mountains N.-E. of here or Blackthorne passes through." Elm heard a thud from the bushes, and approached it. A Raticate had fallen flat on its face, apparently bored to slumber by Elm's consistant droning of useless trivia.

"Interesting" Pherris said bored. He continued down the path and passed the raticate "Apparently it did too..." he laughed "How bout we have a little match of our own, we each use one pokemon, and see where we stand, who knows maybe it will be interesting."

"Okay, one on one? Well, Meowth is less likely to have a weakness issue, but I feel more comfortable with it at full strength. More reliable protection with all the fire types out here. So I guess I'll go with Delibird for our fight. Choose your champion, so that I can take action. Standard one attack per turn battle, right?" Elm selected a Pokeball, and prepared himself for whatever his opponent would pick. Elm may have been more experienced, but right now, he was out of practice. This could go either way.

Pherris grabbed a pokeball on his belt, and threw it into the air. A torkoal came out "Hey whistler" Pherris said happily "Lets take down this Delibird!"
"You get first attack there Proffessor!"

"Well, I guess that we'll need to be cautious here." Elm pressed the button, releasing the bird without throwing the sphere. It flapped merrily, bag bobbing up and down as it watched the Torkoal. Elm took in observations as well, chewing his lip.
"Let's get things started with a Water Gun!" The Delibird produced a water pistol from its bag, and fired a shot at the Torkoal. Though not very powerful, it was definitely a threat to the tortoise.

"Block it with a flamethrower!" Pherris said.
Whistler acted quickly and shot ajet of flames foward causing the fet of water to evaporate in the air.
"Good job Whistler!" Pherris said happily.
