For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
FIRST is the program that my robotics team is part of. It is for high school level kids and you build a robot from scratch in six weeks, so that it can play a game that is different each year. It is a lot of fun and will really help if you plan on becoming almost any type of engineer. It also helps with college, since they give out over one million dollars a year for scholarships.
I suggest that if you're in high school, and are interested in building robots, then you should join your schools robotics team. If your school doesn't have a robotics team, then you could either look for one at a nearby school and see if you could join them, or you could try to start a team at your school.
If you are interested in what I say, then post here and ask me questions, talk about your robotics experiences, or whatever else you can think of. You could find out more by typing in "first" on google and it will be the first link.

Robotics is fun. We had a Electronics and Robotics class at my high school. First semester was electronics, then second semester was robotics, with the ultimate goal to be to compete in at the Tech Challenge. The Engineering class also participated in the challenge, but it wasn't compulsory for them.
Building bots is fun, though both the bots I built were odd looking contraptions made mostly out of recycled materials. Still, it's hard to beat staying up until 5AM at school, working on your bought, knowing taht at 9AM the next day your creation will have to survive a 12 foot drop and live to climb up a 60 degree incline.

Ah yes, crunch time, I remember it well. Last season a couple of guys on the team, including me, were at the school for the entire weekend. I didn't get home till about 11 that Sunday. Then the day we had to ship, I just told my teachers I wasn't staying in class, so I went and helped out. We were working on that thing up to the very second we screwed the lid on the box.
