Dace fidgeted slightly where she was standing, watching Durant get ready for the competition. The asphalt of the arena felt extremely bumpy beneath her feet, despite her sneakers. This was it, the real deal. She reached into her right hip pocket, and produced a Pokeball; a generic red model. She pressed the button, expanding it, and then threw it down before her. There was a red flash, and as the eyes of the competitors cleared, the crimson light began to gather and congeal until it had taken the form of a small, cocoonlike creature.
"Minnow! This is our first trainer, so be ready for a lot of tricks!" Dace barked, her Burmy listening carefully and curling its form cautiously, awaiting the battle's start.
"Forget it! Let's just tackle him outright!" Dace's champion immediately uncurled, using the force to hurl itself into the air. As it dropped, it began spinning, hoping to abrade its opponent with its rugged covering. If it hit, its landing would cushion itself. If not, it would use the momentum to roll back to balancing on its tip again, and ready for the next strike.

OOC: This is my first fight of this sort, so let's hope I get it right BIC:Durant looked at the burmy, then at Taraek and smiled slightly. "Alright, Taraek, don't let it connect, use your vine whip to help push you out from it's landing zone" Taraek, lept forward, and in mid-leap, sent it's vines to the floor beneath it and used them to push itself farther. As it landed, it began to turn to face Burmy as it hit the ground.

The Burmy winced as the vines hit the ground, but Dace herself simply watched impartially. She looked at her nails for a moment, feigned a yawn, and then looked back up to the battle.
"You know, if you aren't going to try to hit me, I guess it wouldn't be fair to hit you. Minnow, Substitute." Dace leaned back against the wall behind her, continuing to act bored. In reality, she was almost certain she was going to lose, but she had to put in a good effort. That's what her teacher would want from her, and what her parents would want. A good, strong, effort.
The worm closed its eyes as if concentrating, and a moment later, a thick layer of twigs and debris extended from within the depths of its russet shell, forming a makeshift armor to protect it against attacks. It leaned its small head forwards, and rolled it a few times, looping silk around the shell to hold it tight.

"Aw... That's no fun. You're a girl, gentleman's rules shouldn't apply!"
Durant smiled and looked at the Burmy as it created it's substitute.
"I suppose that sicne your pokemon is a bug that trying to wait for it to burn itself out is pointless anyway, right?
Taraek, razor leaf that substitute. When it's down let's go ahead and give them a good go!"
Taraek made a noise, almost as if it grunted in response. He seemed to smile with his trainer when he let lose a wave of leaves at it's opponent.

"I don't think we'll yield that easily!" Dace shouted, her Burmy closing its eyes and curling itself up the best it could against the attack. Bits and pieces of deritus were ripped loose, leaving the Burmy's outercoating looking somewhat battered, but still bulkier than before.
"We could take a dozen of those without even flinching!" Dace shouted, keeping up her confident front. Really, she doubted her Burmy could accomplish that much, but she could still try. With young trainers, her teacher had said, demoralizing them could go miles. Gym Leaders typically kept the set of Pokemon they used weak enough for trainers in the region to beat, but tended to use demoralizing tactics to make the trainers slip up. Only those with drive and spirit really made it to the top... She just had to hope that she could demoralize him enough with her bluster. She only had two tricks that could catch him off guard, and those were last ditch attempts. One might not even be legal here... Oh well, couldn't keep him waiting.
"Okay, then. Let's see how strong your Bulbasaur's connection with plants really is!" The worm responded, ducking its head into its armor. It popped back out again, flinging what appeared to be a fistful of seeds from the opening. They landed all around the bulldoglike dinosaur, and glowed green for a moment before exploding upwards in frenzy of thorny growths. They began to snarl and tangle, winding around themselves and closing in to form a tight thicket. If it got Bulbasaur, the grass knot would deal some decent wounds, though nothing major. If it didn't, it would at least be an obstacle that could buy Minnow some time.
OOC: Burmy ssssuuuucccckkkkssss. ALL of my moves except Tackle (!) and defensive manuevers are not very effective. Heck, my Hidden Power and special move both don't help me one bit here. I've got an uphill battle.
Yeah, this is kinda like the anime, though there's a strong videogame influence as well.

OOC: You chose it! You could of had Eevee, or Caterpie, or............... KAKUNA! But nope! You chose Burmy. Well, it's still a decent chance, I'm a newb and all, but if a level 23 Beedrill can beat a lvl 62 Dragonite, then Burmy can beat Bulbasaur..... But, I'm not going to just sit here and allow it.
BIC: Durant looked down at the plants that were sprouting around Bulbasaur. His smile faded for a moment, but it returned quickly enough.
"Even if you can take a beating, can you dish one out enough to compensate it?"
The plants around Bulbasaur started taking hold on him, it was too late to try to move out.
"Taraek! Use vine whip to grab that Burmy, then send it skyward!"
Bulbasaur didn't make a single sound in response, but quickly set to doing what his trainer said, and immediately sent out it's vines. Burmy was quickly grabbed and flung up into the air.
OOC: Hope that didn't count as two.....

OOC: Nope, that's one move. Though it's best to avoid auto-hits, just in case the other person minds it or if they avoid it somehow.
BIC: "I can do good enough to keep up with the likes of you!" Dace responded, clenching her small fists. She watched as Bulbasaur snared Burmy and flung it into the air. This was an opening for either contingency... But she had to save those for later. Right now, she should fight conventionally. Only use those two tricks if you need to, to win a fight... Otherwise... They're wasted. Still, it was bad news that Bulbasaur was that fast, and that accurate... She had some work to do here.
"Cool. I don't mind this at all, and neither does Min." Dace pointed to the Bulbasaur. "Tackle again! Let's get 'em good!" The Burmy instantly responded, angling itself and shifting its mass so that it was falling straight at the grass-type Pokémon. It put its full force into the attack, picking up speed as it blew through the brambles and closed in on its prey.

OOC: That's why I threw you, there was no damage done at all. Least not to my reckoning. You didn't get hit or beaten, just thrown upward.
BIC: "Alright Taraek, Razor leaf it before it can hit you!"
Durant wasn't sure, but if Taraek's Razor leaf attack could hit the Burmy it should hopefully get a critical hit! Burmy's fall would hopefully cause it to push itself into the leaves.... And even if it didn't hit, the impact from the tackle should knock him loose from the grass knot!
He smiled, hopefully this would all work out..... If not then Taraek would just take a beating....

"Uh..." CRAP! CRAP! CRAP! He got me! If I don't stop it now, we'll be almost done next turn. This is it!
"Comet manuever!" Dace shouted, throwing her hand forward as she shouted the command. Her champion acknowledged her wordlessly, and shimmered blue for a moment. As it was hit by the storm of deadly razor edged leaves, they all either shattered to a messy pulp or glanced off harmlessly with a series of loud reports. The blue glow began to grow and take on a more regular shape, evening out until it had formed a considerable sphere around the Pokémon. It streaked downwards, hitting the ground with incredible force and kicking the shredded remains of the grass knot and bits of asphalt into the air.
"You forced my hand..." Dace muttered grimly, unable to see if her attack had connected or not. It was her trump card, but her panic must have telegraphed it at least somewhat to her opponent. Where the attack's full impact had hit, the blow had cratered the arena floor, leaving a perfectly round depression. Burmy dropped its azure glamour, evidently taxed by the attack.
"An invincible shield is a powerful tool, but it keeps your Pokémon from moving at all. However, if you can set your course beforehand, that invincible shield becomes an unstoppable battering ram." Dace said simply explaining her attack to the opponent. She only had one trick left... One more chance to sneak by if Bulbasaur hadn't been overcome yet. After that... lights out.

OOC: Yeah, this is a fight you'd see in Viridian Forest. >_< Both of our trainers are being written as total battle newbies, so every tackle is a kidney punch.
And the winner is going to have an uphill battle ahead of them, too.

OOC: Personally, based on my read, I'd say it's gonna be: Blood/Me (About 60/40), DJK (sorry photu, but writing a convincing newbie hurt you. You still have a chance, but it's low.), Kaz (Torkoal is a huge edge. About 70/30, if he plays right), and BB/El (60/40, though El is looking pretty good. Hardest one to call, in my opinion.)

OOC - I know, mine is the only match where the outcome was immediately easy to predict based on trainer levels. But I don't mind. PLUS IT AIN'T OVER YET
IF I CAN JUST ACTUALLY HIT DELIBIRD OR SOMETHING
THAT'D BE NICE

OOC: Well, good luck there, I think it'd be awesome if you could pwn a vet. (I just recieved some angry glares for that didn't I? I can see majorly evil plots to wipe me out already just for that statement......)
BIC: Taraek was breathing deeply as it lay a couple feet from where it was once held by the grass knot. The attack was a near miss.... But the impact into the ground itself had taken a terrible toll on him. Durant watched him. Taraek got back up on it's feet and set himself so that he would be ready for whatever else could come at him.
"That was nice, it really was!" Durant looked up and smiled at Dace.
Durant then turned his attention to back to Taraek. "Alright, let's keep going, you're doing great pal! Give that Burmy another taste of your razor leaf". Taraek was breathing better, but definantly wasn't up to snuff quiet yet. He loosed a flurry of leaves at it's opponent, and then waited, and watched.

"Thanks! You aren't doing too shabby yourself. Musta been training that one pretty well, huh?" Dace smiled fiercely, thrilled about getting to use her trick despite herself. Durant was just about even with her, something she had never had before in an opponent. In the wilderness, nothing was smart enough to handle the tactics she had learnt, and the one time she had challenged her master, he had literally punched her Pokemon's lights out on his own for the impudence.
Speaking of which... She watched the attack hit Minnow full-on, ripping easily through the rest of its extra protection and sending bits of gravel and stone to rain down on the arena. The armor down, Bulbasaur pressed the assault, dozens of razor edged leaves ripping through the air with little sound, until they hit, gouging out pieces of the arena floor or burying themselves in Burmy. Most simply damaged the outer shell, but she saw two, possibly three blue spots seeping through its armor. It was too vulnerable to Bulbasaur's strikes in its present state... Still, she couldn't put up another Protect for a few rounds at least, and she had to keep her last trick in hiding. She'd need to take it slow this turn.
"HP!" Dace snipped this command to a stacatto declaration, hoping that her opponent wouldn't catch on. It was an incredibly simple ruse, but she might just eke it by him. Minnow nodded, wincing slightly from the pain of moving with its wounds. Darn it... We're going to need to use THAT move next turn. Otherwise, he's going to win. I'm sure.
Meanwhile, the Burmy had begun shaking as if possessed. A loud humming began emitting from it, like a thousand bees on the wing, rising in pitch and volume until the audience could hear it clearly. Bits of gravel and pieces of trash began drifting towards it across the floor, moving as if pulled by ghostly hands.
"RELEASE!" Dace shouted, and Burmy complied, six orbs of electricity firing from its body. They all arced outwards, turning to travel towards their target and leaving a trail of light in the path they had taken. They all converged on the Bulbasaur, crackling with power as they closed in on their prey.

OOC: I'm a bit pressed for other things but fine. I'll do it since it seems to be what other people want me to do.
BIC: "Taraek! Try to ground yourself, now! Shoot your vines into the ground!" Taraek hastily responded, shooting it's vines into the shredded parts of the arena where there was still some actual dirt instead of asphalt. Durant was, if anything, beaming at this last attack from his opponent.
"I'll admit I don't know much about electricity, but I'm hoping that this will have some effect."
That's the thing about grounding..... It was one of those things that Durant never really thought to study..... Although this last move excited him, he wasn't sure that he could stop it. Taraek's grass type might save him, but he was incredibly beat up......
As the balls went flying towards Taraek, the scene froze in Durant's mind. He could see the weariness in both pokemon, the worry and pride that appeared in Dace's face.
Then the attack hit! As all six orbs colided with Taraek, Durant looked down at him, nearly praying that his plan worked.
Taraek shuddered, but took each one.
After the final orb hit, Taraek was still standing! Durant couldn't figure out if his plan had worked, all he knew is that Taraek still stood!

OOC - BloodWolf, you've now basically asked Lee to decide how that Hidden Power attack affected Taraek. That's okay if you really don't mind, but standard PRP procedure (which I know as a longtime PRP observer, not a recent PRP participant) is for each post to decide the outcome of the previous attack and then initiate a new one. So traditionally it would be your prerogative to describe the effect of the Hidden Power's impact, rather than have Lee do it.
Again, if you'd really rather let him do it, that's fine, but you could just as well conclude that post with the Hidden Power actually hitting Taraek, and describe how the damage is reduced by Durant's clever grounding tactic. And then launch the counterattack. Don't feel you have to shy away from diminishing, avoiding or negating his attacks.

There's our opening! We can catch up! Dace smirked, and stood up straight, adjusting her four feet of height to seem as tall as she could. She tried to snap her fingers, failed, attempted again with even less success, and then finally cleared her throat, exasperated. "Okay, cutie, let's patch up those nasty cuts..." She muttered to her Burmy. Minnow nodded, already knowing what was being asked of it. It closed its eyes, seemingly drawing in a deep breath, and then going limp on the arena floor. Dace stood watching, unphased by the movements of her pet. Still a little slow... We really need to work on this move... The Burmy stopped moving completely, sagging in a pitiful pile on the arena floor. A few people in the audience began to murmur, trying to discern if it had been knocked out, or if it was playing dead. Dace held up a hand, silencing them, as pieces of rock and dirt began to slough off of her Pokemon. "Hey, girl, return your freaking Pokemon!" Somebody in the audience shouted. The youthful trainer bit her lip, and continued facing the battle. COME ON. You never took THIS long before! Dace turned and kicked the wall behind her, totally missing the spectacle that occured. The tumbling pebbles and stones that had before been rolling down its still form now began popping into the air and rattling to the ground. Bits of dust and sand were thrown off of Burmy in erratic puffs, covering the arena floor in a gritty mess. Its eyes snapped wide open, glowing with a greyish light. It bounced to a vertical position again, curling slightly for balance. The blue glow crept from its eyes, first engulfing its face, and then trickling down its bodies in waterlike rivulets. After a network of azure lines covered its body, they converged. It began to rumble quietly, a wind blowing about it as it began to rise from the arena floor. The debris it had cast off earlier began to spiral around it, occasional new pieces of cast off armor adding themselves to the maelstrom. The roaring vortex ceased, letting the gravel and soil drop around it in clumps. The glow had dissipated, leaving it revealed once more. Still a Burmy, but something had changed... Its wreath of earthen shards and grit had been replaced. Instead, now, its countenance was considerably more bizarre. Bits and pieces of shimmering scrap metal jutted out at odd angles from a shell of plastic wrappers and pieces of torn paper. A few corkscrew spires of rusted iron lanced out at odd degrees, bent and worn before they had even been adopted. Dace turned around slowly, already knowing what had happened. "My trump card." She proudly declared, pointing to the worm. "Burmies are a very unique Pokémon... VERY unique. They're the only species to have three phases as children, and four as adults. Due to this, they're extremely easy to change... um... genetically. What I just used was a 'Fake Evolution', where I used that to switch its phase. Ground type to steel type." Dace snapped her fingers. "Just like that." "It's a bit draining, but if used right, it can turn things around. At least, that's what my dad told me..." Dace paused for a moment, thinking again. "Good job, Minnow. And that, everybody, is a Paradigm Shift." OOC: Yup, Dace's special trick. I'm imagining it as a 1 PP Bug move that does minor damage while taking about 10% of its own HP and changing its type. That's aboot the gist of it. I just hope Bulbasaur doesn't get any decent Fire attacks.

OOC - Sly's Bulbs can use fire attacks.
1. Use Razor Leaf a bunch of times to make a big ol' pile of leaves. 2. Use Sunny Day to dry them up. They'll burn better that way. 3. Use Seed Bomb to cause tiny explosions that will light them on fire. 4. Use Vine Whip to scoop up batches of them at a safe distance and toss them at the foe. 5. ???? 6. Profit!
