THE OSCARS
BEST RECENT RPThere have been some fantastic new RPs since the
2007 Lugiasian Awards. All the nominees here were worthy candidates, and all received at least some support from the voters. The winner of this award got the most votes only because
all of its participants chose it for the Best Recent RP over other RPs they're in, which must tell you something. I'm pleased to give this award to that cozy little RP known as
Fallfish (
link).
BEST OVERALL RPTo be sure, there was some overlap between this award and the previous one -- most of the RPs being considered for Best Overall are new enough to count for Best Recent as well. What does this mean? It means
we're RPing like we never have before! Or we just have poor memories, but I like the other explanation better. At any rate, the winner of this award is a deeply thoughtful and sensitive RP, and set to become one of the most epochal additions to the RP continuity. I'm talking about
End Game (
link), and not the Samuel Beckett play.
BEST PLOT TWISTThere weren't too many nominees for this one, which is understandable. Really crucial and powerful surprises aren't as easy to come by in RP as they are in normal fiction (to some degree no doubt because it's hard to get all the way through an RP). Of the nominees,
That Shrinking Feeling becomes about something more than ice cream preferences (
link) gets the first runner-up prize for being about the most decisive way to kick a characterization topic into touch. But its support was topped by
Terrian hired by the villains in Triannual (
link). Indeed, Triannual just would not be the same thing on any level without Terrian. And that's why this award, much like that RP, has been... yes. I have to say it.
T-T-TERRIANJACKED!WORST RPThe Razzies may be two days past us, but that's no reason why we can't have one more lil' negative shout-out. Not all these nominees are in here for the same reason. For instance,
That Shrinking Feeling (
link) has a top-notch plot hook and well-written characters courtesy of solid RPers, but the challenge of crossing the river has caused it to degenerate into a feeble mass of endlessly circuitous democracy -- too many cooks have spoiled the broth. But that RP has nothing on
Miss, Did It Hurt When You Fell From Heaven? (
link). No such delay here -- this RP was churned out in less than 24 hours by just two dedicated RPers. Unfortunately, those two RPers were
Prime and
Aurora. So, I mean, there you are. Of course, this RP looks a lot cleaner now that I've edited it, but I think the subject matter should still give you a good idea of why it won.
BEST STORYTELLERThis award was practically
made for
Lee, and it's no surprise that he claims it by nearly unanimous consent. He has an unquenchable thirst to tell new stories, which is why he's always running like four RPs at a time plus all the other ones he's in. Maybe it's telling that he won both this award and Best Procrastinator, but let's not judge
too hard.
BEST RECENT RP CHARACTERJust about everyone scraped at least one vote here, except for
Ernest who gets honorable mention anyway because he's so damn hilarious. But the narrow winner is
Terrian. Hey, what can I say. He's pretty rad.
BEST OVERALL RP CHARACTERAgain, nearly all nominees were supported, but our winner for Best Overall RP Character is none other than
Zebedee, who I know would be a lot more modest and self-deprecating about it then
Terrian would be with the Best Recent RP Character award.
BEST CHARACTERIZERJust three nominees here, all of them responsible for bringing some superb characters into the cast of RP. And, in
Lee's case, a
lot of superb characters. In
Choobs' case, a
good number of superb characters. Then there's
Pohatu with his
very few superb characters. But they were the favorites, so
Pohatu it is. I love it when the underdog wins! I also love it when I win, so it's like Christmas came early.
BEST PERSONALITYA well-thought-out history and an awesome powerset may be great, but in the end it's the personality that makes a character memorable and much-loved. So I'm really glad to be able to give this award to a character whom her own best friend considers a "heartless bitch". She may not be the friendliest... or one of the friendlier... or friendly at all... but she surely has captured Archie Exie's heart.
Rie takes this one.
BEST HISTORYAn awesome powerset and a distinctive personality may be great, but there's nothing like a solid history to tie it all together and give the character weight and texture. Such history may be the backstory from before a character debuted in RP, the overall narrative comprised of the RPs that character has participated in, or a combination of both. In
Sly's case it
is a combination of both with a dash of
really freakin' epic thrown into the mix. If you've got half an hour to burn, go look him up in the Character Bios. Easy to see why he dominated this award.
BEST POWERSETA distinctive personality and a well-thought-out history may be great, but there's just about no way to compete with ORP's finest without some sweet powers. Which is not to say that regular human characters haven't been a success in ORP -- and obviously they're the norm elsewhere -- but sadly this award is not for them. Where was I. Best Powerset. Yes. And the winner is
Terrian. Self-duplication didn't make Multiple Man the King of the X-Men, but in the medium of RPing I'd say it's a pretty sweet racket.
BEST PRP TACTICIANPokemon battles in RP are obviously much less structured than in the video games, but there are still plenty of rules, standards and expectations that make PRP battles a very different thing from usual RP combat. This award recognizes a character whose masterful strategies have changed the face of PRPing. It's
Max, practically the icon of PRP on Archie Exie, and through him
Djkates, the one who's really coming up with the tactics.
BEST RECENT RPERPohatu, whose RP debut pushes the definition of "recent" precisely as far as it will go for the considerations of the
2008 Lugiasian Awards, humbly accepts this one.
BEST OVERALL RPERFor all the amazing RPers on this board, I can't say I'm astonished to see who got picked for the number-one slot.
Lee, have another award.
MOST IMPROVED RPERQuite a variety of RPers here, from the recent (
Blood) to the relatively recent (
Kazkame) to the deep-seated (
Prime). All have improved a lot, but it's
Clicker to whom the votes ultimately fell. Go ahead and claim your award,
Clicker, and don't let me hear you gripin' any more about being invisible within the community, y'hear?
