Marvin spun onto his back and fired his pistol several times into the nearby construct, each one sending a bolt of pain up his arm that made each successive round move farther and farther away from the metallic beast.
Elliot rolled as soon as he realized that another construct was upon him, narrowly dodging a blow that would have shattered his shoulder. He fired several more rounds into, backing away as he went in order to create more space for himself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The gunfire had ceased, but the shouting still persisted. Jimmy turned back towards Yvette, who seemed to be straining to hear what was going on. Her eyes went wide as loud mechanical noises came from just outside the ship. Quickly she shuffled over to Jimmy.
"We need to get out of here, ASAP. I think they're going to blow the ship up. If you know of a back way out of this thing, then now is the time for it."
"I know one way... but I don't know how well it will work."
"We don't have a choice, either we bolt now or we get blown up!"
"My pilot seat is an old ejector model, I'll hop on and then you climb on top and strap us in while I punch the ejection codes."
Yvette nodded and grabbed onto the straps in preparation. Jimmy picked up a small chunk of a chair that had been ripped apart by the turret's fire and forcefully threw it as hard as he could at the other end of the ship, then he swiftly climbed into his seat and punched several keys. Yvette then sat squarely on top of him and clicked locked the straps into place just as the seat began its sudden ascent. Moments passed as Jimmy felt a sudden pressure begin to crush him, and then he saw black.

Dom groaned and slowly got to his feet, dusting himself off and he could feel every cut and scrape on his face after having been pelted with rocks and metal fragments. He could still hear gunfire from Elliot and Marvin behind him though his ears were still ringing from the explosion of the construct he had just killed. He gave the construct’s smoldering remains a quick look over before turning around, satisfied that it was dead.
“Shit!” He shouted upon seeing that Marvin was still in grave danger and quickly picked up his heavy Scorpion rifle and sprinted in his direction. “Marvin watch out!”
The construct slammed its last tendril down on Marvin’s leg in a move that he was sure broke something and judging by the young soldier’s wails of pain shortly after, it had. Dom continued his sprint straight at the construct and opened fire at it, his shots pinging off of its armor. “Come pick on somebody that’s still on their feet!”
Suddenly there was a massive explosion in the distance, where the wreck of the ship had been, that seemed to rattle everything for miles around. Dom quickly snapped his gaze in that direction trying to discern exactly what had just exploded. Suddenly a projectile from above struck the construct he had been fighting and went right through its exposed head causing it to fall where it was.
“Ah crap not again!” He shouted as the glowing cracks began to form on its body and he quickly ran and dove away next to Marvin as it exploded. Dom lay still next to Marvin’s unconscious body with his head covered for several minutes until hearing the sound of a descending ship above him.
“Dom, do you copy?” It was Elena’s voice and Dom quickly rolled over on his back and responded into his suit radio, “yeah, we’re here, nice shot by the way.”
“As if you expected anything less”, she chimed confidently over the radio.
Dom heard a shriek and quickly stood up remembering the other construct that Elliot had been fighting and watched as it closed its armor over its face and glided off across the ground away from the ship.
Dom spoke into his suit radio again, “Elliot, grab Azira from over by the spire, the other ship is here.”
He turned away from Elliot and watched the ship gently touch down a few feet away and the deployment door on his side slid open. “Elena we have two injured here and one of them needs a leg splint and what was that explosion?”
“I’m not certain, but the emergency beacon from your ship cut out shortly after”, she responded.
“Damn, I hope Jimmy and Yvette got out alright. We’ll check it out after we get these injured loaded up”, he said as he pointed out which of Marvin’s legs was broken to the two men that were preparing the splint.

Elliot was already moving to Azira when Dom gave the order to go get her. Slowly, carefully, he picked her up and cradled her in his arms, taking great care to support her neck at the same time.
We've just started and already as many as half of our members are injured. God, please let Jimmy and Yvette be alright.
Marvin struggled, but slowly began to pull himself upright. Pain burned across his body, filling ever limb, every digit. Still, he forced himself to stand still and wait for the dropship to come down. After that, he'd likely be out of the action for a little while. Lieutenant Frost's men would likely be taking over with the rest of the remaining crew supplementing their forces. At this point things had gone so poorly that they may even just leave.

"Jimmy, come on! Wake up already!" Yvette shook Jimmy roughly, hoping that he'd wake up. After several minutes she stopped and sat down behind the pillar they they'd landed behind.
Alright, think. We've dropped down far enough away that they shouldn't catch up to us immediately, but if Jimmy doesn't wake up soon then we're screwed. We need to find Dom and Elliot, and radio in to Lieutenant Frost. She'll need to relay that we need another ship to get off this rock.
"Elliot, Dom, can you hear me? We've been attacked by unknown forces and they've destroyed the ship. I repeat, our ship has been destroyed. Last seen enemy forces were still at the ship and may be there yet. Jimmy is alive, but unconscious. We are low on ammo and need to regroup with you."
Silence came back to her, and she wondered briefly if the message even got through. Jimmy probably knew the suit's radio range, she'd need to ask him about it when he woke up.

Elena stepped off the ship following the two men that had been prepping the leg splint for Marvin, a long sniper rifle propped against her shoulder. Dom moved to her quickly and they proceeded closer to the tail of the ship where the sound of the engines would mask their voices.
“The things that have been attacking us since we got here, you saw what they were right?” Dom asked her in a serious tone.
She nodded quickly, “They look an awful lot like those things that we encountered during that classified operation on Excelsior 5.”
“Exactly, so there must be another artifact similar to the one we were sent to retrieve from Excelsior 5 somewhere on this planet.”
Elena nodded, “The Medusa was a research vessel so that could be why it was sent way out here in the first place. All that unidentified wreckage in orbit was probably where the artifact was originally and something must have happened when they tried to retrieve it that caused the ship to crash.”
Dom sighed heavily as he looked over at Marvin with a leg splint and then to Elliot carrying the unconscious Azira. “This mission has already gone badly enough and now this. I think it best if we just forget about the artifact and book it out of here while we still can.”
“That’s going to be a bit of a problem.” Elena stated. “Our ship’s radio can’t get through to the Hydra or at least theirs can’t get through to us.”
“Damn, we had the same problem on the way in and I figured it was damage to the comm system due to the debris field.”
Elena looked up into the sky where the debris field could be seen faintly through the planet’s thin atmosphere. “Either those alien constructs or something in orbit in that debris field is jamming our comm signals and we have no way of pinpointing the source.”
Dom rubbed his chin thoughtfully before speaking again. “If we can get to the Medusa’s wreck and find the ship’s bridge and if the comm system is still in tact then we might stand a better chance of getting a signal through.”
Elena tapped the sniper rifle against her shoulder lightly. “That’s a lot of ifs, but the Medusa would definitely be able to broadcast a stronger signal than the dropship can.”
“I don’t see that we really have any other options, getting back to the Hydra will be next to impossible unless we have some idea of their position relative to ours.”
“Agreed.” Elena stated with a nod. “We already located the Medusa’s wreck on the way to your distress signal, it’s in the bottom of a wide canyon about five clicks north of here.” She explained as she nodded her head in the direction of the wreck.
“Perfect, now we just need to collect Jimmy and Yvette and hope the Medusa’s wreck isn’t swarming with those construct things.” Dom stated half in a hopeful tone and half in a pessimistic one.

"Alright Azzy, just hang on for a moment." Elliot whispered, mostly to himself. Carefully he pulled her into the transport and set her down. Marvin pulled himself in behind them and sat down next to her.
"I'll keep an eye on her sir." he told Elliot with a grunt of pain.
"Thanks, just take care of yourself for now." he replied before turning around and heading back off the ship. Now that the wounded would be properly taken care of he needed to check up on Jimmy and Yvette and find out what that explosion was.
"Jimmy, this is Elliot. We've been attacked by unknown forces, Marv was wounded in the process and Azzy was found unconscious. Is everything alright on your end?" he asked. Silence came back to him and, after a few seconds, he called back out. "Jimmy, Yvette, this is Elliot. Could someone please answer me?" Again silence came back to him. "Hey, guys pick up!" he demanded, panic flooding his voice. Again, only silence responded to his call.
Damn it, not them too! We need to get them and get out of here, now!
"Dom! This is Elliot" he almost shouted into the radio. "I can't reach anyone back at the ship. We need to move out to it ASAP."

Dom winced slightly at the tone and pitch of Elliot’s voice over the radio, “copy that, lets get moving.” He replied as he moved towards the open door of the ship.
Elena walked behind him to the door and climbed into the ship as Dom stood just outside the door. The wind was blowing harder than ever now and lightning continued to arc through the dark clouds above the advancing storm which was only a few miles away now. Sand could be heard raking the metal hull of the ship and Dom could feel it against his suit. The howling of the heavy wind was almost deafening as he finally turned and climbed into the ship behind Elliot.
“That storm is coming in fast, we need to get moving!” He shouted to the pilot as he mashed the door control button. The deployment door slowly slid shut as the ship began to rise from the ground.
“Alright, lets get to the crash site of the other ship as quickly as possible, we don’t have much time.” Dom ordered as he walked up to the cockpit.
“Copy that sir.” The pilot responded as he took the ship into the air and got it moving towards where the wreck of the other ship had been.
Two members of Elena’s team with medical training were tending to Azira and Marvin as best they could with limited supplies and equipment. “I think she’s got a pretty bad concussion, we need to get her back to the Hydra’s medical bay ASAP.” One of them reported.
“Until we can get in contact with the Hydra that really isn’t an option.” Dom responded with a heavy sigh. “We need to get to the Medusa’s wreck and see if we can get her com system powered up.”
“Sir, we’re approaching the crash site of your vessel.” The pilot reported.
Dom turned back to the cockpit, “what’s left?”
“Not much sir and no sign of any hostiles. I am picking up some kind of beacon a few yards ahead of us though, looks like one from an old ejector seat.”
Dom gave a sigh of relief, “that’s Jimmy and with luck Yvette is with him. Take us in.”
“Copy sir, approaching beacon site.”
The ship approached one of the many rock spires dominating the landscape and began to maneuver to go around to the other side of it. As it did it shuddered a bit and seemed unsteady in the air.
“Anything wrong?” Dom asked the pilot. “It’s the wind sir, seems as if it’s picking up speed and strength with every passing minute.” He reported.
“No worries, as soon as we make this pickup we’ll be moving away from the storm and should reach the Medusa’s wreck well before it hits there.” Dom said, hoping to reassure the young pilot.
“That’s good to know sir.” He responded as he continuously gave a nervous glance in the direction of the advancing wall of dust off in the distance. Lightning continued to arc through the dark clouds above the dust storm and one could hear the sound of sand pelleting the outside of the hull.
The ship finally began to descend to the ground on the other side of the rock spire and Dom could make out two figures below waving their arms in the air. “That’s them, they’re alright.”
Dom glanced back at Elliot, “Jimmy and Yvette are alright Lieutenant, get that door open and get them in. With that storm nearly on top of us we haven’t got a second to lose.”

Elliot was already at the door, pulling it open for the pair as they ran towards the waiting ship. "Are you two alright?" Elliot asked them once they were onboard and the door was shut. "Any injuries to report?"
"We're alright. Jimmy passed out after we launched from the dropship, but that's all." answered Yvette.
"Alright then. Jimmy, go have the medics take a quick look at you. If they give you a clean bill I want you to be ready to take over the ship, assuming Dom and Lt. Frost clear it. I trust you much more than whoever it is up there. Yvette, you may as well get looked at too. The few cuts and scrapes you have aren't much but I'd prefer they get taken care of quickly, there's too many unknowns up ahead. Then the pair of you should report to our Black Sheep. We need to know what happened." The pair moved to the back of the ship, where Azira was being taken care of. With any luck she'll wake up soon Elliot thought. It was something to pray over, that she made it through. That they all would.

“Alright, they’re in. Go, go, go.” Dom said as he patted the top of the pilot’s seat.
“Heading out sir.” The pilot responded as he pulled the ship into the air and turned it away from the advancing storm, the whole craft shuddering in the air again from the wind.
“Alright, punch it, get us out of here.” Elena ordered.
“Happy to mam.” Responded the pilot as he hit the throttle and rocketed the ship away from the storm and headed towards the wreck site of the Medusa. With the storm left behind the ship flew smoothly through the air now.
“How long to the wreck site?” Asked Dom.
“Twenty minutes maybe, assuming we don’t have company again”, answered Elena.
“Good and what’s the plan for getting on board the wreck exactly?”
“If we’re lucky we’ll find an open docking bay. If we’re not lucky we’ll have to find a way to enter through where the belly of the ship split open when it crashed.”
“Lets hope that we’re lucky then.” Dom concluded.

Jimmy watched as Yvette was poked, prodded, and then cleaned up by the medics before finally being bandaged and let go. Then they repeated the process on him. It was short, not more than a few minutes, but it felt much longer. After replying no to the the questions of pain they finally began sterilizing and bandaging the cuts he had all over his face and hands, many of which he hadn't noticed before, and released him as well.
"You'd think all that squeezing and poking is unnecessary by now. If something was broken we'd be able to tell by now." Yvette told him.
"It's in case we're in shock. When you face a serious injury the body doesn't always work properly and it can go undetected for awhile." he replied.
"I know, it's just..."
"You're uncomfortable around them?"
"Yeah. They poke around inside of you and if you give the slightest hint that something is wrong they'll give you a million reasons why that feeling is. 'Ghost pains, dehydration, poor nourishment, cancer'" she said mockingly.
"You should tell that to Elliot. Whenever he has to check in at the end of a mission he gets into a fight with the head nurse. She uses a certain painkiller that he says just puts him in more pain. She thinks he's just whiny."
Laughter erupted from her at that, causing a pair of Lt. Frost's soldiers to turn to look at her briefly before returning to their own business. The loudness of it surprised him, making him laugh too.
"Speaking of which, he told us to go report to Dom. We should get that taken care of."
"Yeah, he'll be at the front of the ship with the Lieutenant."
It didn't take long to reach the front of the ship. On the way there they passed Elliot who glanced at them, but didn't acknowledge them any further. I bet he's worried about Azira. Jimmy thought. He remembered awhile back when Elliot's flirting had been playful, but harmless. Azira had repeatedly shot him down, even demanding that he stop calling her "Azzy", but after awhile that had changed. Elliot kept flirting, but he'd become serious about it. Now that she was injured his normally jovial mood had soured.
When they reached Dom he was giving orders to the ship's pilot. It sent a small pain through Jimmy, he'd been their pilot for quite some time and seeing someone else flying for his team felt wrong. He dismissed it though, whoever this pilot was they had graduated from flight school.
"Sir," he began "we were sent to report to you."

Dom turned around upon hearing Jimmy’s voice and he looked him over and then Yvette standing behind him. “The two of you don’t look too bad off, good to have you back.”
He glanced back out the cockpit window and saw the massive canyon, containing the Medusa’s wreck, coming up in the distance. “When you get to the edge follow it down and stay low to the canyon floor on approach to the wreck”, he told the pilot before turning back to Jimmy and Yvette.
“Now, I need to know what happened at our crash site. What caused the drop ship's wreck to explode?” Dom’s voice sounded very demanding and interrogational as he clasped his hands behind his back. “Were you attacked?”

"Sir, we were attacked" began Jimmy. "We had just finished repairing the hull when-"
"When these guys started shooting at us! They came down in some ship and landed right next to us. At first I thought it was Lt. Frost's team but Jimmy said it didn't sound right and he kept me from heading outside. So we started barricading the door, I expected them to rush right in. We had just finished removing a row of seats and placing them against the door when we heard heavy caliber rounds from a turret slamming against the hull.
"I wasn't sure what to do, I'm not used to assault conditions, especially not while defending, but I reasoned that since it seemed like a turret I should be able to use an EMP grenade to freeze it, and hopefully a few other pieces of their tech. But I knew if I appeared at the window I'd be blown away in a heartbeat, and I needed to see where the turret was before I threw the grenade, otherwise I might miss and they'd be expecting more to come from us. So I called to Jimmy and told him to run up to the cockpit and draw their fire to the front end of the ship. Once I heard the cockpit's window break from the gunfire I popped up and threw my grenade out there and that was the end of the turret!"
"But," started Jimmy, who decided to take the moment's pause so that he could continue giving the report. "That wasn't the end of it, sir. The enemy was still out there, we could hear them shouting, though I couldn't tell what they were shouting. Yvette said she thought they were planning to blow the ship and asked if I knew another way out. The only other way out was to use the ejector seat in the cockpit. I wasn't sure it would work, since the model was old and overdue for a replacement, but once we strapped into the seat and I hit the button we were off. I'm not sure what happened after that, I... blacked out from the ride. Next thing I knew I was being woken up and Lt. Frost's ship had landed."
