I haven't played a pokemon game since gold/silver but now i'm working with middle school children all day so I think I might purchase this new game when it is available to get educated about all these stupid bugs and ice dragons and whatever else exists in the pokemon universe.

Wow.Uh... I'll have to take a more in-depth look later but for now I'm pretty impressed. This is a really weird, unexpected, but very cool generation. My only broad response at the moment is I was at first a little disappointed at how many pure single-type Pokemon there are in this set. Still, what we have are very cool: Fighting/Dark, Water/Ghost, Grass/Steel, Ghost/Fire, Electric/Ground, Ground/Ghost, Dark/Dragon, Bug/Fire, Steel/Fighting, Rock/Fighting stand out. (Though for some reason they overloaded on Bug/Steel types. I count like three different families using that type.) Also, looks like we've got Fighting and Bug legendaries! Now if only they'd release a Poison one...

I personally find it hilarious that Bug/Electric, the type Pohatu played in Mafia, is a huge honkin' spider. (They also have Prime's type combo in a Ghidra-dragon thing, and Loogs' in Victini.)
I actually found a fighting type I like in this Roopushin guy. Provided it doesn't go too overly mainstream, I think I'll sub it in for Mawile in my final party. (That'll give me: Pidgeot, Kabutops, Chinchou, Masquerain, Wormadam, and Roopushin. One from each gen but the first, which doubles up.)(It also answered a question on a spot for Dace's party, so I'm happy with that. She's only got one open spot left now for planning, so we'll see where that goes.)
And HOLY HELL, THE OTTER THING ACTUALLY BECOMES COOL! Some things have Magikarp power where they suck in battle until evolved. This thing has Magikarp coolness.
The one flaw in this gen is a few too many three-stage lines, but I'll take decompressed evolutionary lines over the block of filler that was Gen IV. In my eyes, this is the best Gen since II.

Are you kidding me? You like Daikenki? That thing is a piece of shit! It's a weirdly-shaped fucker that doesn't look remotely otterish and is basically Swampert Mk. II -- already the worst Water starter final evolution by a long shot. And screw Chaobuu, the Fire final evolution, too. Jaroda turned out okay -- kinda Quetzalcoatl-ish -- though I still won't forgive it for being another reptile.
Dokkora - Dotekkotsu - Roopushin are definitely pretty cool though. I think it'd be interesting if each of them learned a move that involved hitting the opponent with what they're carrying. Grass for the first one, Steel for the second, and Rock for the third.
Too many three-stage evolution lines you are right!
Meguroko the goggle crocodile went in a pretty disappointing direction. Those evolutions look like generic bad guys out of Mario.
LOVE the hermit crab that evolves into an entire fucking cross-section of the planet.
That's all for now.

i hate how all the good typings are legendary in every generation. i'm not allowed to use legendaries no matter how much they suck in PvP!
also otter 2.0 isn't bad. kung fu otter is pretty great, in fact.
the flat electric ground thing looks dope too.
and that dark/steel pokemon is totally Rie.

Shinpora the Mayincatec-looking bird thing is bizarre but SOO COOOL. Ignacio needs one.
The new fossil Pokemon are fucking great, it's awesome that they're branching out a bit. They both (I mean, all four) look fantastic.
Yabakuron and Dasutodasu! THEY'RE GARBAGE BAG POKEMON. Why the hell not, Grimer and Koffing could use some more friends. They tried hanging out with Gulpin, but he's kinda weird.
Yuniran-Daburan-Rankurasu are the best argument against the overabundance of three-tier evolution lines in this gen. They could have been ONE Pokemon. Maybe two. As it is they remind me of baby Digimon and that's not cool.
Hell yeah, Shubarugo.

Well, just happened upon a bit of information about the Water starter. I guess it's supposed to be a sea lion with a samurai motif, based on their whiskers. It's random, but sea-lion makes in much more forgivable than otter. I don't get what they're trying to do with the fire starter though. It's a neat design, but it's really... Nothing inspiring. I'm more bored with the constant bipedal Fire/Fighting than I am with the stream of Grass Reptiles. (Though making this one Grass/Dark would've helped a bit too.)
The monkeys don't really do it for me. At all. As such, I'm probably going to nuke them whenever we meet.
A bit of a shame the pigeon evolves into a pheasant. Some day, I'd like a pigeony thing that DOESN'T turn into a falcony thing. Though a pheasant IS a step in the right direction.
Koromori interests me. Will these override the typical Zubats, leading to the first generation where Zubat isn't shoved down your throat every two minutes? Or will they be intermingled with them?
Tabunne is Patamon (or whatever it's called. Forgive me, it's been a decade since I watched any Digimon.). Prove me wrong.
Erufuun is great. Reinforcing my opinion that this generation is designed around a sort of folklore/cultural feeling, it's based on the Barometz/Vegetable Lamb of Tartary. I think I'll need to snag one of those on my first time through.
Earth hermit crab is cool. Probably shouldn't have been a Bug, all things considered (and this is coming from a huge fan of bug types!), but it's neat.
I have no idea what the Dark/Fighting thing is supposed to be. Please enlighten me. Likewise with the Psychic/Flying thing right below it.
Cool fossils this generation. If there's one thing Pokemon does consistantly right, they've yet to have an uncool fossil. (Armaldo isn't that great, but ignore the eyes and see the red dots as its eyes. Then it's awesome enough again.)
Poison thing is an odd design. Looks like something from Chowder, maybe? I kinda like it, kinda hate it. I'll have to use it before I really know.
Gochiruziru is a Gardevoir rebelling against its parents.
Rankurusu is cool, but really could have skipped one of its stages without a problem.
Ice cream thing is fun. Kinda like Weezing on antidepressants. I like how it keeps gaining eyes. Could be wicked interesting to write in an RP. I may go for it with Isambard, since it fits his theme. (Dodrio, Exeggcute, etc.)
Shikijika gives me hope they've incorporated seasons. That'd make the game much more immersive (and explain the sudden boom of fire and ice types!) (On second thought, I guess there aren't that many ice types. Felt like there was.)
The mushrooms... are much less believable than Voltorbs. but hey, I'll take another fungi Pokemon. They're underused as is.
No idea what's with the Water/Ghost, but it's a cool typing.
The spider is my favorite design this generation. Pity it has two types my party abounds with, really.
Pinecone thing is cool. Second stage could be some fun choreography.
The gear thing is... a surprisingly unambitious line. But, on the other hand, it's a neat concept for evolutions. I'm very torn on them.
I think they switched up two bug lines, since the Helmet bug has to evolve into Knight bug. Unless there's something FREAKY going on there.
The electric ray is neat. It's Water Absorb away from being the coolest type combo they've done yet.
The Dark/Steel thing is very Sentai. I'll have to team it up with Ledian for a sentai fight (Is there anything else? This seems like a fun potential party! Maybe Gallade?)
Baffuron is cool. Any idea on if this is a Tauros evolution, or just a similar design?
I like the two three stage dragons. Very Toho, very Godzilla sorts of things. Those'll be fun to see battle, even if I won't use them (I've sworn off the type, bar Vibrava, since Dragonfly Dragon is too neat to not use.)
Fighting trio is sort of neat, and the cloud trio is... Interesting, albeit somewhat lazy. I'm hoping that one is actually a pure flying type, and that's not a glitch. That'd make me happy.
Seems like there's 13 legendaries out of 155. I think that's better than Gen IV, though I don't have numbers on hand.

My only opinion is this: I'M FREAKING EXCITED! It's the first time that I can't decide who to put in a team, all from the same Generation!!! Actually, I forgot to say this in my post, too. This is the first time since Gen II I've had enough favorites that I could make a spare party. Gen III and IV had some things I liked (Masquerain, Mawile, Wormadam, Drifblim, and Cherrim), but I was apathetic on the majority of the generation. This time, there's very few things I wouldn't train, and quite a few of those are just due to my personal code, though I like them okay (I don't use Starters, Legendaries, Dragons, or most really popular things, such as Lucario). And I actually adore the dragons and legendaries this time through.

Erufuun is great. Reinforcing my opinion that this generation is designed around a sort of folklore/cultural feeling, it's based on the Barometz/Vegetable Lamb of Tartary. I think I'll need to snag one of those on my first time through. SWEET CATCH. I didn't get that at all. Nice move, Gen V. Poison thing is an odd design. Looks like something from Chowder, maybe? I kinda like it, kinda hate it. I'll have to use it before I really know. I really like the trashbags actually! Maybe I'm just a sucker for Pokemon based on inanimate objects, but these two are goofy and fun. Also, if the second one's name is supposed to be "Dustodust", that's legit. Shikijika gives me hope they've incorporated seasons. That'd make the game much more immersive (and explain the sudden boom of fire and ice types!) (On second thought, I guess there aren't that many ice types. Felt like there was.) They have. You go through one ingame season per month of real time. Also, there is nothing at all like a boom of Fire and Ice types. If anything, there's a boom of Bug, Fighting and Grass types. Psychic too. Also, I think they're not using any old Pokemon in Black and White (pre-National Dex, that is). So no Zubats thank GOD. But that also might mean Emonga, Mamanbo and Buffalon might not be evolutions of Pachirisu, Luvdisc and Tauros which -- ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF MAMANBO BECAUSE HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU ROLL A DESIGN LIKE THAT OUT THE DOOR AND PRETEND LUVDISC DOESN'T EXIST -- would make me do a spectacular fucking jackknife off the handle.

The funny thing is that I STILL like them more than Uxie/Azelf/Mesprit, because they actually feel different, even if they all are "Stormcloud Oni things". Uxie/Azelf/Mesprit were all bland psychic types with decent stats. That was about all there was to them, because they didn't give them any neat typings/traits to help make them better represent their motif.

y'know, looking back over old topics, Pohatu's otter design would actually be a superior way to start the Water Starter line. (Not to mention that it starts off looking like a kitten, a better way to herald the upcoming sea lion.) Though I'd really prefer if this one ended up as Water/Steel or Water/Fighting, and as Pohatu pointed out, there's way too much blue in the current starter. But yeah, anyways...

Man, I wish we had the time to go and whip up an entire generation. My newest idea for one is something halfway based on Carmeldansen and halfway based on the Water Scorpion, which holds its scythelike claws in a similar pose while waiting for prey. I don't know if it'd be Water/Dark, Bug/Dark, Water/Bug, or what.
