Yoshimitsu and Illiana stepped out into the square, blinking slightly at the sudden change in lighting. There was a commotion going on, apparently. A crowd had gathered to watch sometimes, and Yoshimitsu thought he could see fireworks just above the centre of the crowd. Probably not fireworks, actually, thinking about it. It was a mage festival, those were probably spells. Showy sort, for tourists. Even Yoshimitsu could do a bit of that when he wanted to. He glanced sideways at Illiana, who was trying to hide her awe at the spectacle she could see.
"You don't have to hide how you're feeling, y'know," Yoshimitsu commented, nudging Illiana lightly. She smiled in response.
"It's just strange," she replied in a thoughtful voice. There was a sudden faraway look in her face, one that Yoshimitsu knew quite well.
"Something on your mind?" He asked, keeping his eyes on bit of the parade he could see.
"Since I got here, I haven't had a single nasty look or judgemental comment," Illiana explained. "Not even a passing snide remark, or anything. I'm not used to that."
"Is that because..?"
"Because I'm a Summoner, yes," Illiana confirmed, nodding just once. "I don't think Lord Miko was wrong in what he did, but I don't think it's fair that our entire race should be punished because he was forced to do something so... destructive."
"I wasn't there at the fight at Slateport," Yoshimitsu admitted, rubbing the back of his head. "But I know Miko. Not really well or anything, but I know him well enough. He's a good man, who's had a lot of responsibility shoved at him. I know what he did at Slateport and why he did it, but I don't really think any worse of him. I've done a lot worse in my time, just... nothing so in the public eye."
"You're a rare person, Yoshimitsu," Illiana said, surprising Yoshimitsu entirely.
"I am?"
"Yeah... It's not often I meet someone who understands us," Illiana said with a smile. "We're not perfect, and some of us even cheered for Miko when he did what he did. You don't think any worse of us because of it."
"I've always been a fan," Yoshimitsu replied, flashing a lopsided grin. "Does that mean we can be friends?"
Illiana laughed, which Yoshimitsu took to mean they could. Without any warning, he seized Illiana's hand and lead her through to the front of the crowd, snagging a program of the day's events from a random bystander. Once they hit the front of the crowd, Yoshimitsu heard Illiana gasp. The display in front of them was pretty fantastic, even if it was just the tail-end of the parade. Mages on floats that were moving on their own, weaving illusions and light displays with such a confidence that it looked natural to them, like they breathed the magic and it just did what they wanted it to. A bright crimson phoenix made of wisps of smoke soared above the crowd, each flap of its wings sending rainbow coloured spirals down that faded away slowly, flying through brightly coloured rings that flashed and exploded colourfully as they were passed.
"Impressive, must take a lot of effort to keep coloured smoke in a form like that," Yoshimitsu commented appreciatively. He turned his attention to the program in front of him, checking to see what the day's events would be. Illiana's eyes were still locked on to the floats as the last of them finally passed by.
"Well there's a few things we could check out," Yoshimitsu said as Illiana turned her attention back to him. "They've got a light show down here-" he indicated by pointing on the map in the progam "-or we could check out some of the bars and see what mages drink, or just wander around to look at some of the architecture, or maybe shopping? I could do with a new pair of shoes."
