It's just communal storytelling, Raze, there isn't any mechanical element to it. No real comparison to MMORPGs. And like I told you, it isn't a necessary element of being a member here. There are plenty of people like Baboon who contribute tons to the forum without ever setting foot on the RP boards. I didn't even RP myself until this year.
We would still love to see you join though.

Basically, RPing is telling story with a bunch of other people, and it's based mostly off of character interactions. Nothing like MMOs.
And don't forget, if you mess up, we'll all shun you forever!

There's a fair amount to learn, but you'll get used to it. There should be stickies for most of this stuff, but let's see what I can do.
- First thing to do is choose your universe. There was a time when characters would often cross over from PRP to ORP and back again, but that was long ago. Now, each RP forum is more or less a universe unto itself, and has no continuity with the others.
- Second, create your character. Name, appearance, starting abilities (or, for PRP, starting team), and backstory are really the most important part at this point. You don't have to reveal, or even fully decide, your character's entire backstory when you first make the character. Just make sure, if you're doing one of the universes based on an established franchise, such as Pokemon or FMA, that you don't do either one of the canon characters or someone who's as close to one of them that they might as well be that person.
- Remember as you create your character that you will have to start off fairly weak, then his/her abilities will grow over time.
- Two of the biggest sins in RP are superplaying and auto'ing without permission. Superplaying is basically making your character do something he/she shouldn't be able to do, with no good reason for them to be able to do it. Auto'ing without permission is pretty much what it sounds like -- controlling the actions of another character without the permission of the person whose character it is. For example, let's say we were in PRP, and our characters were having a friendly battle. If one of your character's Pokemon used an Ice Beam, and you said it encased my Pokemon in ice, I'd be more than a little miffed. Yeah, that could happen -- but it's up to me to decide whether the Ice Beam even hits, let alone whether my Pokemon becomes encased in ice.
- RP is really more about telling an interesting story than it is about "winning". Especially in PRP, which has probably the most organized battle system of all the RP forums, a lot of people will lose sight of this. Most of the rules are in place to keep things interesting. This is also why most of the successful RP topics are cooperative, rather than competitive (though there have been a number of really good competitive RP topics over the years).
- Take your time when making an RP post. Pretty much nothing in RP is real-world-time-sensitive, and people would rather see a well-thought-out post that took you a few hours (or however long) than a quick post that gets done what needs to be done but is full of grammar and spelling errors because you cranked it out in a few minutes. I spent a couple of days on my latest PRP post; granted, that's a little extreme, but in that particular case, it was important to me.
That should cover the basics. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

A slight correction to the above post: Though most of the universes are independant from each other, Future RP is the same universe as ORP, just 30 years later.
Some forums you don't need to start weak as much in. Pretty much ANY forum under General RP you can start at a moderate or even high power level in (APCARP, S-Cry-Ed, FMA, etc.).
Oh, and one other thing. Villainous characters are always allowed to start out as being more powerful than good ones, if they so desire. That way, since there's less villains than good guys, there'll be more fair fights.

Of course nameless-henchmen / random-baddies / trolls / orcs / demons / genetic-"superbeings" / storm-troppers / cannon fodder is about as strong as the plot requires to have fun throwing them around.
