At the sound of the clicking and whistling, the young girl opened her eyes and rubbed them sleepily. At first, she didn't know what it was that had awakened her, but as the clicking began again, a small shape swooped down off the ceiling and headed for the open window.
Mei Lin jumped from the couch where she had fallen asleep and ran to the window. The sun shone brightly off the rice paddies on the fields below the village. Two swallows swooped in front of the house, chirping hellos before they flew off down into the paddies to pick up mud for their nest. She held out her hand and caught some of the water dripping off the roof from the early morning rains. It was the rain that had forced her to sleep on the couch. She really needed to get up on the roof and fix the leak, otherwise she would drown in her bed.
The town, with steam rising from the wet streets, looked so inviting that she decided to put it off. She grabbed her bag, made sure the window was propped open and started toward the door. A chirping made her turn around; a swallow flew in through the open window. She stuck out her hand with her index finger extended. The swallow settled on her finger, chirped a few times, then flew up toward the ceiling.
"This is going to be a good day." She said, closing the door behind her and heading into town.
The air was cooler in between the houses, and her sandels flapped with each step as she weaved among the streets. Her dress was drab, and olive green faded much with use and the weather, and her hair was pulled back from her face. Defiantly, she refused to wear the hat that her parents had always insisted she wear.
"I won't succumb to class." She sniffed, "I'm not going to be just a peasant." She thought to herself as she entered the village center.

OOC: A really beautiful introduction! Atmospheric, aesthetically pleasing, and a great introduction to an interesting character. I'm just wondering, what kind of characters would you like for this plot? Would you like more ordinary humans, or are you open to Powers and such? Once I know what you'd like to see in this RP, I'll see what I can round up from the various authors on the site. Here's hoping you the best of success; I'm greatly enjoying your writing already.

OOC: Just a bunch of different characters for the plot. Take your pick really. I'm kinda thinking that it should be minimal powers, maybe weapons more than powers. I'm thinking a group of friends or just some townsfolk for the plot. Someone Mei sees every day or on a regular basis.

OOC: Did some asking around; Clicker (From Flint and Steel) says she's making a character and will join once she's got a few details worked out. There's a few other authors interested, so there should be some action here soon. (I'd love to join, but with as many plots as are waiting on me, I'd get swarmed by an angry mob.) Wishing you the best of luck, this plot looks fantastic!

Steam was wafting over the city streets; a light rain evaporating in the early morning heat. Xiao was strolling through the city, that is, strolling as much as a young boy can. His light blue shirt had a couple of rips and stains and his brown shorts had seen better days. He paused a rather substantial amount of time near the candy shop. He hovered outside the door fingering a couple coins. He had been saving up for materials to make the "most amazing super awesomest kite ever" as he so eloquently put it; unfortunately saving was having an extremely negative impact on his candy intake.
Exhaling deeply Xiao shuffled his small feet away from the confectionery shop. "OH boy!"He exclaimed in excitement, his former disappointment melting into pure delight. For to his great pleasure there on the ground laid the most amazing stick his eyes had ever beheld. It seemed to have a perfect holding spot just the right size for his small hands. He snatched it up happily. Then with all the joy and laughter of childhood he began to run with it. He tore past houses and shops all the while banging the stick on everything and anything he passed. He was a one man show, a personal drum solo running as fast as he could. Xiao laughed loudly and joyously as he clanged and banged and thwacked through the city.
Suddenly, though, everything turned for the worse. The perfect stick got caught almost at the same time as Xiaos right foot accidently kicked his left foot. The combination sent him face planting into the ground. After a moment he sat up, his lip was bleeding, as was his nose. However the worst part of all, by far, was that he had completely wiped out in front of someone. Not just anyone but a woman. Now Xiao, being only eight did not have much pride, but he did have some; and the small amount he did have was greatly wounded. Despite his best efforts Xiao couldn't keep the tears from rolling down his cheeks.

"Who's got the stick?" Mei thought as she passed between two stores that were still closed for the morning. "I can hear the bloody thing bouncing off of all kinds of things."
She stepped out into the street from the alleyway and there it was; a boy with the offending stick in hand. She was just about to shout when he tripped on himself and fell sprawling into the road. She saw him look up at her, blood running down his chin from both his lip and his nose. He was about 8, she though. Then she took a second, longer look.
"I know you!" She exclaimed accusingly. "Your that kid! The one who steals peoples things for your little projects."
He had tears in his eyes, she thought, oh for the love of weasels he's crying.
She took out her handkerchief and sat down in front of him to help mop up the blood. "What were you doing kid?" She asked. "An how come you kept banging that stick against things huh? You want to wake up the whole neighborhood?"
She went to stand up and a small metal object slipped out of the pocket of her dress and hit the ground. She felt his eyes upon her as she bent to snatch up the sharp object before he could get a close look at it.
His eyes bugged out as Mei slid her hand back into the small pocket. "What are you staring at?" She asked, stamping her foot in frustration.

From the roof tops the steams could be seen slowly rising throughout the town. A slight breeze carried whatever steam rose above the buildings toward the rice fields outside of town. A young teen laid sprawled on top of one of the many roofs, his shaggy blond hair shifted slightly as the breeze flowed over him. Usually the town was fairly peaceful at this time of day, however, today the normal chirping of birds was disrupted by loud banging noises on the streets below.
"It sounds like that kid is at it again." Oni muttered to himself as he watched the clouds slowly drift through the sky.
A sudden silence brought his attention away from the clouds and to the streets below. Standing up he slowly walked over to the edge of the roof to get a better look, however he stumbled over his rucksack that had been carelessly thrown onto the floor when he laid down. Landing near the edge of the roof he grabbed his rucksack and peered over the edge. Down below a young lady was talking to the towns mischievous youngster. A small metal object fell from her pocket, but she retrieved it and returned it to its original hiding place before he could get a good look.
"I wonder what they are doing." He wondered.

Xiao didn't want to seem weak, but he was grateful for the gentle hand, even though it did come with some not so gentle reprimands. He meekly tried to shrug away, but have been secretly hurt had she actually stopped. He rubbed his eyes on the back of his arm, trying to disperse the offending tears. "I don't steal stuff." He snapped out. Though not entirely true, it was close enough, after all there were some things he hadn't stolen. Besides that he did appreciate a complete stranger viewing him in such a negative light. "I wasn't either making a loud racket!" He sniffed. Something metal and totally cool looking fell from her pocket. Xiao wanted to grab it but decided better of it, as he had just proclaimed his innocence at being denounced as a thief. "So what cha doin with something like that?"

" I don't intend to tell you, kid" Mei said as he stared at her. "And it's no use glaring at me like that you little squirt."
She turned and walked away. "Don't make such a racket this early. Other's won't be so nice."
She wanted to get down to the paddies; with any luck today she'd be able to find the box she had buried down in the far corner by the small patch of woods. Last time she tried to find it she had been searching in the wrong section of the fields.
"S'not my fault that I have a very short memory for things like this," she muttered to herself, "I blame other people."
She trotted across the grassy pathway between the paddies and watched the swallows fly up from the mud. She paused again, held out her hand and let another swallow land on her extended finger. "Hello, my little swallow." She cooed at it. It cocked it's head to the side and then flew off toward the village. "
"Almost there" she said.

Xiao rocked on his feet for a couple moments watching her leave. A brief smirk crossed his face, and his eyes started to sparkle. Then, about as subtle as a hot pink elephant, he began to creep along after her. They were heading to the rice paddies.
Xiao had been to the rice patties hundreds of times, but his parents forbid him to go unsupervised. Xiao was not a bad child, but he could be well labeled as mischievous, and hyper. However, he did not quite blame himself for what had happened. Either way he was with an adult now, so that should count as supervised.

Watching them wander away Oni stood up and tried to wipe some of the dirt off his worn black t-shirt and brown shorts. Most of the dirt wiped off but some had been ground in long ago. Small blood droplets stained his shirt as well, but this was to be expected when you were the son of the towns butcher. Throwing on his rucksack he turned to follow the two individuals. Before walking he checked to see if his butchers cleaver was still sheathed on his belt below his rucksack. Feeling the handle made from steel and wrapped in clothe socked in resin for grip comforted him. The knife made famous by his fathers trade reminded him of how safe he was when his father was around.
Suddenly realizing that the young one would be out of site soon, he quickly turned and started running along the roof tops jumping across the gaps between the buildings.
"If I remember correctly the young one is named Xiao, the girl I've seen around but I don't think I've ever heard her name." He muttered to himself as he ran. "I may as well follow them, I have nothing better to do."

Mei paused as she passed by a field where a heron was standing. The Heron looked at her, then looked behind her. She smiled tightly to herself, then rushed on. She could hear the boy blundering along behind her.
Sixty-seven steps behind, she thought as the heron croaked its unique call of indignation and flapped it's ungainly body into the sky. Sixty-seven steps. He's not bad for keeping up.
She ducked behind a bush, took a running leap and jumped across a section of a paddy. She was almost at the woods now. All she'd have to do is find the right tree.
She heard a chirp and a click behind her. She slowed as a swallow dove around her, circled her a few times, chirped again, and flew off in a different direction.
"That way, huh?" She said aloud. She changed course and ran along the edge of the water and the forest. She felt free when she ran, like nothing in the world could ever catch her and she could just race away toward the sunset. Her father had always said something about that. Her mother too, come to that. It has always sounded too stern for her liking, but what could you say when you had been shirking off of work to do other things. At least she'd gained enough knowledge to know how to work the rice paddies that belonged to her parents before they died.
The bird turned and darted into the trees. She followed.

Xiao ran now as fast as his small legs would carry him. He tried to keep up with the young woman. He watched her jump over a corner of a rice paddie. 'I can make that' he thought smuggly to himself. "Easy Peasy!" He bellowed as every muscle in his entired body pushed him forward. Unfortunately for him every muscle was still small and though the effort was there, the ability wasn't. Xiao began descent about half way from the anticipaed spot. A small splatting sound, and a mini tidal wave later, there was one really wet muddy boy sitting in a rice paddie.
Not having time for incidentals like clothing or dignity, Xiao sloshed through the rest of the way and scrambled up the bank. Within moments he was in hot pursuit again. "Waaaaaiiiiitttt!" He whined in desperation, once he realized that he was becoming winded, and the distance was becoming greater. Granted it was not his most mature move but sometimes one has no time or patience for maturity. "Waaaaiiiitttt! I can't keep up!" She didn't seem to be sympathizing at all with his previous misfortunes, and this did irritate him greatly. "Please. I'll get in trouble if they catch me here alone, and I don't know my way back from here. Beside I won't tell no one I promise! Please slow up."

The end of town brought an abrupt end to the roofs. Seeing the edge of the last roof quickly approaching Oni desperately tried to stop, but his foot slid through the small amounts of water that remained in puddles along the rooftops. With far to much speed and far to little friction he slid over the edge of the roof. Frantacly grabbing for something to grab onto Oni managed to get one hand on the roofs ledge.
"That was close." He thought as he dropped the rest of the way to the ground in a much more controlled fall. A loud splash sent some birds flying in the air as Xiao fell into the water. Oni admired the little guys determination to keep up even if he lacked the ability. After seeing the young one enter the woods he broke into a sprint to keep him in sight. Easily clearing the rice paddie he soon had the smaller child in his sight.

Entering the woods, Mei heard the little boy shout. She wanted to keep going but she wasn't sure if she should. It was the brat's fault that he had followed her, why should she have to stop and wait for him. The bird was only a little ways ahead, and she was gaining. She could see it flapping hard.
Alarm bells started going off in her brain. Why was she catching up to the bird? The bird hadn't changed its speed, and neither had she. She glanced at a tree as she was passing it. There was a deep gouge in the bark. She slid to a stop in the dirt, kicking up a big cloud of dust. With the wind at my back, she thought, the dust should blow away soon. Even as she had the thought, the dust was indeed blowing away from her and her visibility was getting much....
The dust parted, flowing around something in the path in front of her. The hair on the back of Mei's neck stood up on end. She glanced at the tree again out of the corner of her eye, then at others. One, two, three, four....four trees; a deep gash in each, all about head height.
Thick trees, she thought, probably 25 centimeters in diameter. Cuts appear to be 5 centimeters deep. This means that the bloody thing is probably using a force of --
The dust swirled upwards in a small tornado on the right side of the object.
Mei jumped backwards and threw herself flat on her back. She felt the air around her move as something passed right above her and slammed into the trunk of a tree, nearly cutting completely through it. Another swirl, this time on it's left. She rolled away as a deep cut appeared in the ground and the dust flew into the air again.
The damn thing's invisible, she thought as she sprang to her feet. She took a few hurried steps backwards and tried to think. What was it her Grandmother had taught her? Something about some words or something that would make things show their true selves.
"Oh to hell with this." She said aloud. "Show yourself!" The air fizzled. Then she heard the footsteps. She turned, and made a leap at the boy who had just appeared around the side of a tree.
"Run!" She shouted, grabbing him.

Xiao had almost reached the lady. He watched her disappear in the woods, but quickly caught sight of her again. Suddenly she paused. 'Perfect' he thought ' I can finally catch up.' Suddenly, Xiao felt a funny feeling in his tummy; best described as 100 earth worms dropping from his tummy to his toes, then wriggling around. It was the same feeling he got that one time when he'd accidentally caused a ladies sales booth to collapse. Or more accurately the feeling he got when her husband pulled out a belt. Perhaps one could say he was starting recognize the feeling of dread. He decided that exercising prudence here would be, by far, the best coarse of action; and the once determined boy now crept behind a tree and waited. Xiao didn't know exactly why he was afraid but some self preserving instinct made him hold still.
"Show yourself!" The young woman yelled. Xiao was still afraid but he figured that he could trust the woman. He couldn't have answered had some one asked him of what was he afraid. The forest was normal looking, no thieves or robbers that he could see, and no Nian to kidnap him either. His mother always said that is how he was going to go, taken out by a Nian for being so naughty. However this girl had given him a direct order, so he puffed out his chest and marched himself out from behind the tree. Xiao was determined to show no fear.
Before Xiao could prove himself unafraid a hand had slipped into his, and nearly yanking his arm out of socket whipped him around opposite of the direction he had previously been facing. "Whaa!" He exhaled as they made a mad dash together. Suddenly he noticed for the first time a shaggy blond haired man. He didn't know the man, and he didn't know what he was trying to escape from, but the man looked like the best option. All Xiao knew for sure was that he wanted to be running towards the man. Xiao decided to make his intentions known to his newly acquired running partner. So he ever so smoothly flung his head towards the man, and eloquently grunted "Eh" as he changed direction ever so slightly.

The teen's eyes darted around the forest wondering where the little one had gone. Suddenly the sound of chaos softly drifted through the air for a brief second, as if death had come to whisper a few last words into the ears of those in the forest. Sensing the danger, little birds darted from trees in every conceivable direction. Feeling nervous Oni began fumbling with the straps that held the cleaver in its sheath. Finally unclipping all the straps he slid his hand to the cloth wrapped handle. Feeling the resin soaked cloth slightly calmed his nerves, but the feeling of danger and dread began to fill his stomach until it seemed it would flow out of him into the forest around him. Or perhaps it was the other way around and the forest's feeling of dread was seeping into him. Quickly suppressing these feeling, he tightened his grip on the cleaver and ran faster.
Crashing brush brought his attention a little to his left. The girl could be seen running through the forest as if Hell had exploded behind her and heaven had granted her feet wings. Despite the deadly atmosphere Oni couldn't help but smile. From were he stood it almost seemed that the girl was dragging Xiao through the forest as some of the village's little girls dragged around rag dolls. However the smile quickly faded as the Xiao looked his way and tried to change direction. It wasn't the little ones attention that had taken the smile away, it was the small poofs of dust that would appear behind the pair.
"Not an invisible..... something" He moaned. "I'm to young to possibly die. I'm not even 17 yet." " Now what did father say about vital points and cutting up large chunks of meat?" Oni began to muse.

Mei heard the kid grunt, and glanced the way he was looking. She saw him change direction and head towards some blond, shaggy-headed guy.
Who the heck is this guy? She said to herself.
She started to slow down, saw him take out a cleaver and decided not to find out. He could be with the creature chasing me. He's looking rather worried though. Wait....he's not going to try and attack the damn thing in here is he? With a meat cleaver?? That's not going to work at all!
"Run, you moron! That's not enough to get through it's skin!" She yelled as she sped past. "Unless you're volunteering to be a diversion and get eaten so we don't! In that case, Thank you!" She called over her shoulder. "We'll treasure your memory always!"

Jamming the cleaver back into its sheath Oni quickly refastened the straps and began sprinting back towards the village. "Never met something I couldn't cut before." He thought. "But I'm sure not staying around to see what it is!"
Looking over his shoulder he saw the puffs of dust getting a little closer. "Crap, I'm to young to die, I'm to young to die." He shouted. Before long Oni caught up to the two that had left him for dead. He couldn't blame them he would have done the same thing, although he probably wouldn't have yelled a nice warning as the lady had done.
Noticing that Xiao was slowing the girl down Oni reached down and grabbed him under the arm lifting him a few inches of the ground. Now suspended between the two of them the child seemed less of a burden. Since Xiao no longer dredged behind like a ships anchor the girl managed to pick up some more speed.

Xiao gasped as his feet left the ground. He attempted to run, but to little affect, seeing as niether feet were in contact with the earth. Through this brief moment of sheer terror, being unable to alter the situation for either better or worse, Xiao took the time to contemplate his life. 'I should've bought the candy. I should've bought the candy. I lost out on so many pieces of candy that could've been mine. Besides that I saved up so much money just to build the most amazing awesomest kite ever, and now I'll never get to build it, not even fly it.' A tear slid down his cheek. 'Whats the point of saving money if you're just gonna up and die before you get to use it.' "Saving is stupid" He cried loudly forgetting the current situation by focusing on the unfairness of dying before spending the saved money.

Mei looked down in astonishment. "What the hell is wrong with you, Kid?" She yelled at him.
The dappled light filtering through the trees was getting brighter, and with a sudden burst of sunshine, they were out into the fields. Mei turned and ran right, dragging the other two with her in the hopes that they would follow. She skirted a paddy and was just turning left to head up between two rows when she heard the creature blunder out of the forest.
She turned to look. It was visible now; the shimmering air that had been their only hint of where it was had disappeared.
The creature was tall, muscular, brown skinned, and had weird shaped protrusions around its shoulders and down on its thighs. They looked a bit like the fungus people would normally see on the trees in the forest. The arms had....blades. It was the only to describe them. They were long, looked sharp, and very, very lethal. There were blue and silver swirls like tattoos on its body, and they looked to be moving continuously.
It looked directly at Mei and growled. The teeth were twisted and gnarled. Meant for tearing flesh from bone, she thought. The eyes were deep set, red, and glowing.
The creature took a step forward, bunched its legs as though it were ready to spring, and launched itself forward over the paddy...
Or that is what would have happened, if the side of the paddy hadn't crumbled into the water. The creature pitched forward and fell, face first, into the muck. It raised its head, and tried to growl. A bubble of mud filled and popped in its mouth.
Mei stopped running. Then she started to laugh; it was high-pitched, full of terror and bravado, and she couldn't stop. She looked at the others, laughing maniacally, pointing at the creature.
"It blew a mud-bubble," She burbled. "Growl, pop! The logistics of that happening is ridiculous! I don't think I can stop laughing!"
Still holding the other two, laughing maniacally, she ran on. Soon they were all out of breath, and they stopped. They were very close to the village now, and when they turned, the creature had stopped following and was slinking back into the forest.

Xiao wasn't sure how to feel, aside from hungry, he realized how hungry he was as they made their way back into the village. There was terror, and mud bubbles, and a man with a cleaver, and this lady wouldn't stop laughing. With all of these thoughts whirling around poor Xiao, and not being able to handle so much excitement all at once, his mind focused on the most tangible thought; this thought being hunger. "Guys I'm hungry!" He whined loudly. Mei shot him a dirty look. 'Whining is not the way to go' Xiao thought decidedly. He scrunched his face up really tight and squinted at Mei and the guy. Mei seemed more like the leader, so Xiao decided that all requests be directed towards her. 'Now how to get my way' he thought still watching her. However Xiao's attention span was about average for a boy of his age, and he got distracted by the smells coming from a small restaurant.
"Lets grab brunch over there." He said shrugging, his demeanor completely changed from the whining brat of the previous moment. On the contrary now he was most agreeable. "Its makes the best food ever!" He added. "My mother used to bring us in there every night for dinner." This wasn't the truth, in fact not even close to the truth, Xiao had never been inside the place, let alone eaten there. The woman and young man both looked up at the old sign. It read 'The Hapi Puppi'
"My names Xiao" he said pulling the older pair towards the resteraunt, "and we're a team now right? So we gotta eat yummy food!"

OOC: Just a heads up, Mack, Silentshadow. Shoni is moving into a boarding school this weekend, and as such has been a bit busy to post. I'll talk with him next chance I get, and see how things work out for him to do writing. Worst comes to worst, I'll fill in for him til his next home leave. Just a momentary delay, and we should be back in motion. Excellent writing you guys, I've really enjoyed following this RP thusfar.

OOC: Sorry for the delay guys. I finally got around to checking if the site was unblocked and lucky for me it is so I will try to keep up with the writing.
BIC: Entering the restaurant, the past few minutes began flowing through Oni's head in a giant blur. Most of it could be explained as some part of freakish fairy tail he had heard as a child or maybe some strange weather patterns. But the creature that seemed so elusive in side the forest haunted each memory. It seemed as though the creature had come from the depths of hell to chase the group of people who had innocently wandered into it's path. Sitting down at the table he thought of something. "You said I couldn't cut it, that means you knew what it was. What was it?" He inquired as he turned to Mei.
Before she could answer an employee wandered over to ask what they wanted to eat.

The waitress left, heading with some speed toward the kitchen. Mei looked at Xiao. "Did you have to order ALL that food?" She asked him. He just smiled in return.
She looked up at Oni and noticed he was still staring at her. He asked the question again. Mei looked out the window. "I don't know what it is--" She started to say, and held up her hand as Oni went to speak. "I don't. Really. But I have heard rumors." She leaned forward, and little Xiao had to climb on to his knees in order to get in on the whispering. "A few years ago, somewhere around 20 or so, there was this maniac in charge of this really bizarre sect somewhere in the Eastern part of the Province. They had managed to get a hold of this doctor who specialized in...some really strange form of surgery. My father once told me that he would travel into the forest, look for a certain kind of plant, and use the toxins in the plant to dream. When he would wake up, he would create whatever he saw in his dreams. The sect had him create an army of creatures that were...I don't know...like weapons. Skin like iron, which is why you would never have been able to cut him; at least not with that cleaver anyway. Supposedly this doctor put things like spears and swords and axes on their arms. My father said they even had creatures that had siege weapons attached to them. I don't think I ever truly believed him, but when he would talk about these things, he would get a very--" She hesitated, then continued "well, dead look in his eyes. Sometimes when he had been drinking, he would look into the distance with horror. One thing he said did get to me at one point. He said that the creatures were created from human beings. It was very evil. Very evil. I had thought they were all destroyed by the Government."
She glanced around as she said the last part, and noticed the waitress was staring pointedly at her. She turned back to the other two. "That's what I heard anyway."

Xiao listened intently to Mei's dissertation on the monsters. Despite the effort of his entire being to attempt to understand what she was saying, none of it made very much sense. In fact, Xiao felt very similar to the time his little brother Lee asked for help on a puzzle. He had graciously accepted the challenge, only to feel absolutely inept at puzzle building. He was finding pieces that were not of any shade or hue in similarity with any on the box. When, after a long frustrating go at the puzzle Xiao finally had questioned Lee, Lee revealed that he had found the box in a dumpster filled with a bunch of pieces. That would've made sense if there were only missing pieces, however the biggest conundrum being the pieces that matched nothing, drove Xiao to question further. Upon harder questioning it came to light that Lee had been gathering up extra puzzle pieces for over a year to make up for the missing ones.
The feeling from that day was exactly how Xiao felt at the moment. He took a green crayon, one of the four so generously provided by the waitress, and started writing a list on the back of the colouring page which was also supplied.
"What are you doing?" Mei groaned.
"Making a list of all the pieces I'm positive belong to this puzzle." Was all Xiao would say. Peering over his shoulder she could read the list, it was as follows Postive 1. wierd metal thing 2. creepy guy 3. birds 4. metal bear 5. doesn't leave forest
unpostive 1.human metal bear 2. nightmare inventions 3. Government killed all??
"Ok so how do we find this nightmare maker, if he exists?" Xiao asked beginning to pig out on the food. "And yes, I didn't know what I would like so I had to order it all, you guys have enough money right?
