GUYS WE HAVE A PROBLEM FREEWEBS ONLY ALLOWS TWENTY PAGES FOR NON-PREMIUM USERS.
Which means someone needs to buy our way into Premium.
The basic package costs $50 a year and gives us all the benefits we'd need, including unlimited page count.
Someone with Visa, MasterCard or PayPal want to take one for the team?

Urg. If we're gonna go with a service like that, does anyone know if Google Pages is any better?

WE MIGHT STILL BE GOOD
Ok, so I've been poking around on the google page creator, and it looks A LOT better than the freewebs editor. Has a nice layout manager, and a handy little button that says "edit HTML" so you can easily change things like that.
We also get 100MB of storage. I didn't see anything about a maximum number of pages, and seeing as my friend has a website on googlepages, and he has multiple stories, i think we should be fine.
people just need to be willing to use Google.

As far as I'm concerned, a site domain is a site domain. It's the content of the site that matters, not who's hosting it.
*Is totally fine with Google*

Here's the test home page.Obviously we'll be changing the content. Unfortunately, I don't think we have complete control over the background colors / pictures. Someone should check up on that.

It says you can have 500 pages. Sounds like enough for us!
Actually, if we ever needed more pages than that, we could create another Google website for all further extensions off the core pages.

Yeah, basically. Google is awesome like that.
I bet they've started converting the Earth's crust into server space. Because otherwise, i dunno how it would all fit.

Say! Can other folks have the login info to edit?
And did you put in that Latin stuff yourself? Or what?

yeah, I'm PMing people right now.
And the Lorem Ipsum stuff I copied and pasted in. The professionals use it. Or something like that. >.>

Is it... like... going to be a permanent fixture on the boards?
Or was it just a test thing?

Lorem ipsum is a test thing, been around for 500 years or so for use in testing typesetting and such. Web designers use it to see what pages look like when they have content.

Unfortunately, I don't think we have complete control over the background colors / pictures. Someone should check up on that. Turns out you can change the color scheme by selecting "Change Look" in the upper right-hand corner while editing a page. I chose "Chemise Slate" which I find to be pretty sexy. But your mileage may vary. Please say so if it does.

yeah, I know you can change the look, that's how I got the branches. But I'd like to be able to change the color scheme, maybe even the banner...
I think I might be able to replicate that just by inserting a picture into the title spot, though.

I did a drastic thing to the home page which can be undone.
I changed the layout so there is no sidebar. Instead, all the sidebar links are in the footer at the bottom.
Why did I do this? Because the content column with a sidebar present is too freaking narrow. It'll make pages like stories and Mafia History require way too much scrolling. Also, it severely cuts down on the length of pictures that can be included.
Should I undo this? Your call, but I'd really rather give it a chance first. All the links will still be there -- just at the bottom.

I kinda like having a sidebar... I didn't see this particular one, but having the links all on the bottom is a little wonky. Perhaps just make sure any sidebar put in isn't wide? *shrug*

You can't alter the width of the sidebar, at least as far as I know.

The content with the sidebar was the perfect width for easy reading. Scrolling is good. You don't want your horizontal lines to be too long, or else it gets hard to read.

I entirely beg to differ! Longer rows of text are easier to read!
And what about images?
I actually really preferred the Freewebs engine (for many reasons, the wider content column being only one of them), but I doubt anyone would volunteer to shell out the $50 a year to make that possible.

$50 a year wouldn't be too bad and I'd be willing to pay it but I think there may be better hosts out there if we're looking to throw some money at this thing. I think we should shop around a little before deciding on a host.

30 pounds a year actually costs more than 50 dollars a year. It's equal to about 60 dollars a year, no?
Is there a sample by which we can test the page creation engine?

They have a free one if you want to give it a try. I get paid on tuesday so if we can decide on something soon we can get started straight away.
