Rick nodded and the cap floated down onto his head once more. Again they were in a slightly rearranged lab. As the memory continued to reconstruct itself, Rick took the moment and turned toward Lee.
“I’m not sure if my father ever found out anything else,” he said softly. “I choose not to be privy to that part of the experiment. Sly abandoned that phase a few weeks after that last memory; he wouldn’t say anything but I think his conscience finally got to him. I know the past can’t be changed, but don’t let this one act taint your memory of him…”
The lab now had six extra occupants. Two were Pokemon, the rest appeared human. Venusaur was setting on the floor; its massive size blocked most of the aisle it was in. Jeff was leaning up against a wall. Mew, being the carefree Pokemon that it was, had perched atop his head. Rick was typing at a computer with Ally fast asleep beside him, resting her head on his shoulder like it was a pillow. The last person was tall with thick black hair. Most everything about him looked normal, except the large angelic wings on his back.
“That’s my father,” Rick said once more for Aurora’s benefit. “He was stuck down in a furious battle with the Kul. We thought we had lost him, but Sly was able to ascend to another plane of existence and attain a new body.”
Sly looked out over the others. “Jeff, go up into the house. Bring down any supplies you think are worth taking. Weapons, food, various gadgets of mine, et cetera. And may god help you if I see you bring down the TV.” Jeff nodded as he bolted upstairs with Mew perfectly balanced on his head. “Rick, how are those programs coming?”
“Pretty good,” Rick said as his fingers made the last few keystrokes. “The computer will be able to detect the optimal spots for tapping into the dimensional rift…”
It was like someone had turned down the volume. Even though Rick’s mouth was moving, no sound was being emitted.
“Pretty much the rest of this will have to be narrated,” the present Rick said from the memory chair. “By this time the machine was done, and it just needed that last program to be operational. Dad had discovered that by travelling to a dimension one step up on the frequency scale, the only harm it did was to cause a person to emit more static electricity than normal. But if it were a long jump, like the one tonight, it would cause a large amount of destruction. These optimal operation spots where the computer was leading us, Sly theorized, contained a material or object with which the device was reacting. And he was right." Rick reached into his pocket, pulled out the blue crystal and set it down on the arm of the chair.
“We travelled to so many different dimensions. We found a world where they had never heard of war, famine, or plagues. My dad had the idea of setting up a system of ‘gates’ that would allow travel between dimensions. He hoped it would offer new ways for people to live. But unfortunately, not all dimensions were so nice. The last one, number fifty-six, was a world ravaged by war. The beings there resembled our orcs, but much more technologically advanced. They pretended to be our friends, but they deceived us.”
As Rick spoke many beautiful worlds played out in front of the small group. Fifty-five worlds in all were shown, until it arrived at number fifty-six. It looked like something out of a horror movie, a blood-red sky with two suns. Destroyed cites could be seen in every direction.
“We were there for at least a month. My father, always the scientist, was amazed by their technology. Apparently they had won their war a year before with a newly developed superweapon. They had discovered advanced-stage cloning, the ability to produce a fully grown clone in only a few hours. They mass-produced these clones until their army was almost limitless.
“These beings began to show great interest in the dimensional device. Fearing what they wanted it for, my father hacked into their internal main frame and discovered their plans. They had developed a new device capable of turning soil into energy. He was amazed at first, until he read of their plans to use our device to travel to and ‘harvest’ other dimensions of resources before converting the planets to energy, thus killing every living being in that dimension.
“It was this moment he realized there would be no great system of gates connecting all the dimensions; that as long as his invention existed, no world was safe. That morning he told us of his plan to leave, to come directly back here and destroy the machine. That was only a few days ago…”
Rick took a few moments before finishing. “We don’t know how they found out about our plan to leave but they did, and they were determined to keep us from doing it. They tracked us to a frozen tundra of ice and snow... but even after... everything... they still ended up with the machine.”
Rick’s eyes were bloodshot as he took off the cap and looked at the others.
“I don’t know how long it will take them to figure out how the device works, but when they do, they’ll attack. I ask you, please stand with me when the time comes and help to avenge our friends, and to make sure that my father's last invention of science doesn’t become a weapon of war.”
Rick felt as if he were going to collapse. He had overdone himself before, but after everything that had occurred, he had fully consumed his stamina and energy. He teetered on the edge of the chair, struggling to stay upright with every last ounce of strength he had.
OOC – Well this may be a long post but it’s not my best. I’m tired so I’m not sure how bad it sounds. Well post what you will.
