Taraek shuddered, then let out a loud cry. Durant got up and began to approach him.
"Taraek, are you-" he began, but was cut off by a sudden flurry of leaves that began spiraling around the small plant pokemon. Several leaves struck Durant, causing him to shield his face from the rest of leaves.
After a few seconds the flurry ended and the last few leaves that Taraek had previously surrounded Taraek fell to the ground. Durant stopped covering his face and looked at his friend, but where there had once been small dinosaur-like pokemon with a small green bulb on his back there now stood something different. Though still a dinosaur in appearance, there was no green bulb on it's back. Instead, there was now a budding flower, and the pokemon larger in appearance.
"Taraek..." began Durant, who was now standing in awe of his friend. "you finally evolved!" A moment passed, then Durant tackled Taraek. "You did it pal! Congratulations!"

Dace stood still for a moment, regarding the spectacle. This was something new to her, actually. Though Minnow's Paradigm Shift ability was technically an evolution, she still looked the same afterwards, still was the same mentally. A full fledged evolution, where the Pokemon as a whole changed? Physically, capably, and even mentally? This was the first time she had ever seen one in person.
"That's... That's amazing. Taraek, ummm, uh-" Dace paused, uncertain. How much of the past would a Pokemon remember if it changed so dramatically?
"Good job, I guess?", and then turned to Laksha.
"Laksha, you need to keep Ganesh from running off like that," She said coldly, her voice thin and lacking its usual pep. She saw Laksha's slightly surprised expression, and decided to keep going.
"Yeah, this time was okay, but what if he did that when we fought that Granbull? It would have kicked Taraek's butt! And today, we're going to be fighting something even stronger! If my tutor's worried about it, this thing must be like- like-" Dace paused, her harsh tone echoing off the hills of the cape.
"It could be like a legendary or something! If you can't control Ganesh, we can't count on you!" Dace turned, and began walking away, arms folded over her chest. She came to the slope, and slid down, not turning back to acknowledge the group or even vocally acknowledging what she would have considered a fun drop.
OOC: Yeah, Dace is venting a bit from the stress from the bridge trainers picking on her, and a bit about getting left out of the battle there. But I don't think she quite realizes it.

Ganesh kicked up some dust excitedly, then bumped Taraek the Ivysaur with his trunk, their scuffle completely dispelled from his mind. He drew in his breath, then snorted heavily through his trunk to blow some of the leaves back up into the air. Then he rolled back to Laksha and beamed up at her, expecting at least a pat on the head for his role in helping Taraek evolve.
But Laksha didn't touch him. She was staring down the slope where Dace had returned to their original path. There was an uncomfortably stony feeling in her stomach. She'd never heard Dace sound like that.
She felt Ganesh nudging her hand with his trunk and looked down at him. He looked very proud of himself. Her lip curled downward.
"Ganesh, I sent you to keep an eye on Taraek, not fight him," she said, "and if you'd stood still long enough for me to talk to you, you might have known that."
Ganesh's eyes widened. He instantly quailed, almost seeming to shrink under her gaze.
"I think you'd better rest now." Laksha drew out his Pokeball. "Here, Ganesh."
The Phanpy only had enough time to utter a soft whine before transforming again into red light and returning into the Pokeball.
Laksha felt hot in the face. She looked over at Durant's shoes before starting off to follow Dace.

OOC: Go for it.
BIC: Durant smiled as he caught up with the group with Taraek following closely behind. Although Dace's outburst struck him as odd, even a bit cruel, especially since Taraek had been the first one to run off, he was too excited about his friend's evolution to be too concerned about it.
However, as he walked past Laksha and saw the expression on her face he couldn't help but feel a bit bad about how things had gone, and his own part in it.
"Hey Laksha, are you alright?"

Dace had been moving quickly along, trying to stay ahead of the other two despite their longer legs. She heard Laksha's reprimands, and Durant's concerns, but didn't acknowledge either of them. They both acted like Pokemon were their buddies, like the Pokemon were almost in charge most of the time.
Wasn't something that her tutor said something about that? She kept trying to pull her tutor's voice to the front of her mind, to recall their sage wisdom and such. It was all hazy though. Garbled bits and pieces of sayings, moments of lessons. She just couldn't really focus on it.
She moved one of her hands, putting it to her forehead, the other dangling at her side. Wasn't she supposed to keep things in line? Or did he say something else, something about how Pokemon should be allowed to give their own opinions, too? She glanced back. The others had almost caught up to her.
She shoved her freely swinging hand into her pocket, and felt something there. A piece of cloth? She tugged it free, glancing at its design. The trident symbol... That thing that Minnow had dove-
Oh. Crap. CRAP. She had let Minnow do the exact same thing! The exact same thing, totally. If it had been less of an issue, it was only because Minnow was slower and less able to go off on its own.
And she had just shouted at her friend about it.
Cheeks burning, Dace threw the scrap of fabric down in the grass. She pitched her weight against the pack, and began walking faster.

OOC: FALLFISH ANGST NIIIGGGHT
"Don't worry about it, Durant. It's fine -- could you--?" She reached out an arm to Durant to get his help in descending the slope. He wasn't wearing open-toed sandals.
"I'm glad for you and Taraek, really. Ganesh is, too. That was the important thing -- the evolution. That's the only part we'll remember in five years." She smiled. "To quote my mother."
She sped up a bit, not wanting to hang back from Dace. It would be better for the three of them to stay together. She noticed that Dace had dropped something -- it was the fabric from before. Wordlessly, she picked it up and tucked it into her satchel.

Durant took her hand and held it as Laksha carefully maneuvered down the slope.
"Never heard that before, my aunt Julie always said that we remember things by showing who we are. Memories can't be forgotten, cause they make up who we are. They're always with us." said Durant, once more sporting a broad grin.
At the base of the slope, he moved ahead and started walking with Dace.
"Hey Dace.... Any real idea what we're going to be up against? I mean.... You're tutor wouldn't really send you out against a legendary, would he?

Dace tried to outpace the others, but it wasn't much good. She couldn't run outright. That'd just be infantile. So she was stuck letting them catch up to her.
"Uhhh... I dunno? They said it was a problem Pokemon," Dace shrugged, trying to recall what else the letter had said. She couldn't recall anything else.
"He trusted that I could beat it, but he's put me against a few really hard fights and some of those I woulda lost if he didn't step in and help me," Dace wiped a tear from the corner of her eye discreetly, and sniffled as quietly as she could.
"So I think it's probably something that's right like, well, too strong for me alone, prolly, but we prolly can beat it as a team. My tutor always did say that numbers were a really big deal with Pokemon, so if you had a lot, you could win against somebody with only a few," Dace chuckled quietly.
"Of course, I'm the only one not taking that ad-" She paused. It looked like something dark had moved in the bushes. Her hand flew to her pocket, seizing Minnow's Pokeball.
"I think I saw something in there, guys. Didn't you?" She pressed the button on the sphere, triggering its release mechanism in an explosion of sparks. Minnow landed on the soft grass, and glanced back to her trainer. Dace looked slightly shaken by something. Maybe it was a sign of a challenging battle coming up?
Minnow bent low, curling into a ready position to launch into a Tackle. Whatever was there wouldn't catch her off guard.

Laksha looked into the bushes, lining up her Pokemon in her mind. Ganesh would sit this one out, she concluded without looking at Dace. She considered sending Sankh, who hardly ever seemed even the least bit fatigued, but she decided that Taraek's averse reaction to the Fire-type wasn't likely to have diminished even if he had just evolved. No, Matsya would be interested in a challenge, having been discounted for the fight against Jed and Roufus.
"Quick, now, Matsya," she whispered. In another second, the Remoraid was given form, and scrutinized the bushes carefully, puffing up her cheeks in anticipation of an early Water Gun. Her reflexes were lightning-quick, as Laksha knew; if she didn't pace her attacks properly, she could fly into a trigger-happy frenzy.

Durant stared at the bush, trying to see what his friends thought they saw. After a moment though, he found that whatever it was they saw, he had apparently missed it.
"No... I don't see anything there." He turned to look behind him and saw that Taraek was staring at the bush as well.
"What do you think it is pal, a pokemon?"
Taraek's only response was to let out a growl and shift his position. Whatever it was in there was upsetting him, a lot. Durant looked back at the bush that seemed to hold everyone else's attention, then a sudden thought occurred to him.
"Dace, could it be that pokemon that we're here for?"

"It probably could be..." Dace turned to Minnow.
"No, not Tackle. Hidden Power. You can hit them more before they get to you, that way," The bagworm took her advice, little beads of electric power forming on its shell. They burst outwards, still growing, and began to whorl about her. Bits of fluff from the garbage about her, and stray seeds and bits of leaf litter began to creep in, drawn as if by a magnet.
"Okay, Minnow, you give them the first shot-" Dace held up a hand, clearly intending for her Pokemon to pause.
"Now!" She brought her hand down, Minnow obeying instantly. A series of orbs fired away from her, sizzling into the bushes and causing scorched leaves to go flying out in all directions.
There was an unearthly scream as a dark form, almost an indistinct blur shot out of the bushes. It rushed past the group, vanishing into a crag in the ridge above their present position.
"Guys... I have no idea what that just was," Dace muttered, kneeling by Minnow's side and keeping her eyes locked on where the creature had vanished.

When Minnow activated her Hidden Power attack, Matsya sprang forward, eager to follow up with her stored Water Gun. But she came too close, and the unseen Pokemon that emerged from the bushes nearly trampled her as it bolted past. Matsya flopped backward, overwhelmed. When the creature had disappeared again, Laksha hurried to the Remoraid and helped her back upright.
"Hold your range, Matsya. You know that. You're not to approach anything you can hit from a distance, let alone a Pokemon you can't even see."
Matsya perked up her head in acknowledgement and faced the ridge, still resolutely storing her Water Gun.

"It would be better not to attack any pokemon, even if it's one you can see." Replied a voice from behind.
The group and their pokemon turned around to see a young woman standing behind them. She was tall with light brown hair that had a touch of blond to it. Her eyes were a light blue, and would have been very beautiful if not for the icy glare that emanated from them. She wore a forest green vest with pale yellow accents, a black shirt beneath it and black jeans.
Most notable about her sudden appearance wasn't how suddenly she appeared, but what appeared with her. On one side stood a Charizard which mirrored her icy stare. It stood slightly behind her, but had a fierceness to it that surpassed it's trainer.
On her other side was a Muk, although it did not possess the icy look in it's eyes that both it's trainer and the Charizard had, or even their fierceness, it held an obvious toxicity to it that more than made up for it.
Matsya, somewhat surprised by their sudden appearance, set off her water gun at the Charizard. The Charizard turned it's gaze onto Matsya and, before the water could even reach it, took a step forward and let out a stream of fire at the jet of water , creating a brief pillar of steam.
"Calm down Spitfire. You can wait a moment" Said the trainer, placing a hand on the Charizard's chest. She eyed each one of the trainers and their pokemon, pausing on Taraek who was standing protectively in front of Durant and glaring at Spitfire, who was returning the budding pokemon's glare. She then looked up at Durant, who had taken an involuntary step back from the rest of the group and grabbed at his shoulder.
"Hello little brother"

"Little brother? What?" Dace's voice was shrill. She glanced over to the trembling Durant, and then back to the young woman. Dace judged the trainer at a glance, comparing her to the pros she had seen in Lavender. The way the one in green moved was pure business, all harsh efficiency. She didn't have the ease about her that most top level trainers did, but her party was clearly strong and well ordered. Easily stronger than a group of beginners like Dace and company.
"So, you're the person who hurt him, then..." Dace balled her little hands into ineffective fists, glaring at the new arrivals.
"And that's Spitfire!" Minnow, hearing her master's words, began to charge up another Hidden Power attack. Its eyes were narrowed into a hateful stare, focused on the duo that had hurt two of its friends so badly in the past.
"You're not here to make up... If you were, you'd be giving him a hug right now, not standing there with your party ready to fight."
"So I bet you're just here to pick on him some more. You saw that he got tougher now, so you gotta just go and stomp him back down, right?" Dace stepped nearer to Durant and Ophelia, craning her neck to try to meet the sister's eye.
"Am I right?" Behind Dace, Minnow's attack crackled ominously and spat a stream of voltage into the air.

Laksha turned to look directly at Dace for the first time since withdrawing Ganesh. She was taking an upright, confrontational stance with fists at the ready. Laksha frowned. Perhaps it was admirable for Dace to display such passion on Durant's behalf, but Laksha also considered it fairly jarring that Dace -- who had twenty minutes earlier opposed a minor scuffle between Ganesh and Taraek on the grounds that the party needed to conserve energy -- was now plainly inviting a challenge from a trainer who appeared far stronger than the Nugget Bridge group.
Matsya sprang back to Laksha's side, not taking her horrified eyes off the Charizard and the Muk. Laksha touched her blue-gray scales in reassurance. "We're not interested in a fight," she mumbled, fully expecting that none of the others would hear her from her distance.

She ignored Dace and continued to stare at Durant, even taking a step towards him.
"I don't have time to play with you or your friends today Durant. Give me the Grandbull you have in that little blue ball, and no one will be harmed." She said, taking another step forward. "But don't, and you know I have no problem with taking it from you."
Durant stopped shaking and shook his head, causing his sister to scowl. "Last chance Durant. One way or another, I will have that Granbull."
"No Ophelia." He said, shaking his head once more. " If you know what this pokemon is, then you know why I can't g-"
"So be it!" she nearly shouted as she turned around and walked behind her two pokemon. "Spitfire, you know you're enemy. Sludge, the fish and the bug are both yours." As she turned back around to face Durant, her two pokemon advanced on their designated opponents.
"Remember Durant, this is all your fault." She said coldly. "Sludge, body slam the Remoraid. Spitfire, slash!"

"He's not going to just hand over a Pokemon he captured, just because some bully tells him to!" Dace shouted, trying to catch Ophelia's attention.
"I don't know what you think, but he's not going to be pushed around by you any more! Just since I know him, he's gotten a ton stronger, and so's Taraek!" Seeing that Ophelia was undeterred, Dace changed her approach slightly.
"Pokemon's all a numbers thing anyways. You've got two, we've got three, right? Even if you're stronger, we still have more versatility and stuff. We won't lose anywhere near as easily as you think we will," Dace knelt, whispering a command to Minnow.
"-and you can bet that if you're going after Durant, you're going to fight each and every one of us!" She concluded the moment she was no longer instructing her Burmy.
At that moment, Ophelia launched her preemptive attack. Her Pokemon surged past her with frightening speed, bearing down on their targets. Spitfire brought its talons forwards, moving them so quickly that the trainers had trouble following their path. It lunged in, ready to punish Taraek once more-
Only to be deflected by a cerulean streak. Minnow landed, Protect still raised, on the sandy soil to the side of the conflict. Sparks from where talon met forcefield slowly drifted earthwards, fading as they dropped to the ground.
"I said you'd fight all of us, didn't I?"

Matsya hopped back quickly to avoid the Muk's bulk, but it caused a splatter of mud as it landed on the ground, some of which landed on her. She lost her balance, but quickly resumed her position beside Laksha to await her orders.
But the girl was standing stock-still, silent. She was torn. The socially easy and superficially noble choice was to fight back -- but even if they somehow managed to win this battle, with the beast of Cerulean possibly so close and capable of attacking at any time, their party would be too fatigued to stand up against it. It would be much more difficult to go against her friends' wishes and oppose the fight, and although they would remain much safer that way, Laksha didn't know what she could say to persuade Ophelia to call it off.
Matysa stood raptly by her side, while Sludge reconstituted itself a short distance away. Laksha clutched the strap of her satchel. If she took one step to stand between the Remoraid and the Muk, it would be illegal -- and an unimaginable breach of ethics -- for Ophelia to command her Muk to advance.
But what would Laksha's friends say?
The girl drew herself up straight... and took a step backward. "Aurora Beam, then," she muttered. The Remoraid complied instantly with a beam of rainbow-colored light shot dead-on at Sludge.

Ophelia turned her eyes to watch the Remoraid's attack. Not surprisingly to her it struck Sludge, even freezing part of it's body. Without ordering Sludge's next attack, she turned here eyes briefly over to Dace and her now shielded bug, then to Taraek. He was still glaring at Charizard, even growling now. Ophelia smiled, but unlike her brother's smile, it held no joy or friendliness to it. Only malevolence.
"Sludge, thunderbolt." She said, still staring at Taraek. The Muk opened it's mouth, as if to smile at the Remoraid, then released a bolt of electricity at it.
"Spitfire," at that moment Taraek ran forward and Ophelia paused. It only took another moment, and then Taraek jumped up in the air, preparing to use take down on his age old foe. It was then that Ophelia chose to finish her command.
"Slash!" Spitfire stepped back and in the moment before Taraek would have struck him, he brought his talons across the side of Taraek's body. The force of the blow sent Taraek flying into a nearby tree.
"Your weed evolved Durant." She said, looking back at her brother. "When weeds grow, they get cut down."
Durant watched as Taraek's body hit the tree and, before he even hit the ground, Durant was running to his friend. "Taraek!" he shouted, his voice breaking, indicating that he was close to tears. "Come on pal, we-" But before Durant could say another word, a vine went from the base of the budding flower and covered his mouth, cutting off any suggestion his trainer was making. Taraek then turned over and began to stand up. It took a moment, and was obviously painful, but once more he stood, ready to take on the Charizard again.

OOC: When weeds grow, they get cut down... Awesome line. Somebody's getting some karma!
BIC: "You aren't going to beat us! No matter what!" Dace shouted, pointing directly at Ophelia. Minnow's shields exploded into shards, falling to the grass and sparkling away into nothing.
"Minnow, tuck'n'roll!" The bagworm threw itself to the side with greater might than its size would indicate, tumbling to a stand directly behind Spitfire. It hopped back, avoiding a lashing tail.
"Let's see if you managed to hold that charge! Hidden Power, now!" Minnow skidded sideways, branches of electricity immediately lacing outwards through the air around it in a dense corona. Minnow's eyes shifted blue, wisps and flickers of the energy arcing back from its antenna back towards its body.
"This one's for Taraek! Hit 'em!" About twenty orbs of lightning fired out from Minnow, hovering in the air for a fraction of a moment. Then, synchronized precisely in the motion, they rocketed forwards. They all began converged at one point, moving fast enough to leave a visible trail in the air. The attack lanced at Spitfire's back with a crack like a thunderbolt.

At the last instant, Matsya flipped out of the way of the Thunderbolt, avoiding an attack that would otherwise have caused her considerable damage. Laksha was loathe to smile triumphantly for fear it would bring on a reversal of her fortune. But she did whisper "Well done," not taking her eyes off the Muk.
The wisest move would be perhaps to disorient this foe and put it on the defensive. But how? The Muk looked all but unshakeable, as sturdy as Sankh, as it seeped forward. Nearly its only discernable feature was its eyes... perhaps -- Laksha was distracted by a crackling burst as Minnow's Hidden Power took form and flew toward the Charizard. For a battle containing no Electric Pokemon, quite a few sparks were flying.
Laksha stooped close to Matsya, her mind made up. "Bullet Seed," she said softly. "Aim for the eyes. Throw it off guard."
Matsya didn't need to be told twice. Not budging from where she stood, she instantly discharged a rapid-fire spray of tiny seeds at the Muk's face. Although the Grass-type move was unlikely to seriously hurt the Poison-type, Laksha was hoping Matsya would blind her target temporarily, which would leave her with enough time to set up a Lock-On.

Sludge turned suddenly when an angry roar came from his partner. At first it appeared to be in surprise, but then came Ophelia's command.
"Sludge! Gunk shot!" and, without even a moment's hesitation, Sludge spit a large purple substance into it's hand and threw it at the Burmy.
A moment later, it struck the Burmy at the back of it's head with enough force to knock the bug pokemon face first into the ground. Ophelia then turned to Dace, still smiling malevolently. "I said that the fish and the bug were both Sludge's, didn't I?"
Ophelia then glanced briefly at Sludge, who had a small cluster of seeds where his face had been not more than a few seconds ago, then to Spitfire, who had been facing the Burmy, and Ophelia, ready for the next attack. With one slight nod from it's trainer, the dragon-like pokemon leaped into the air, and continued rising until he was well above the treetops.
Durant, who had watched Minnow's attack with a small bit of joy, felt it drain from him after the Burmy fell to the ground, even though it had gotten back up rather quickly.
This isn't doing us any good! The longer we stay here fighting her, the worse this will be for all of us! Durant then turned his attention to Taraek. Although he stood ready to continue the fight, it was with obvious difficulty that he stood at all. Where the Ivysaur had been hit with the slash attack was bleeding, and many of the plants immediately around Taraek had a decent coating of blood on them.
Although sorely tempted to switch Taraek out with Oddish, Durant knew that there was know way it could take the beating Taraek already had. Even if he tried to switch pokemon, Taraek wouldn't have allowed it to happen. No, this fight would continue. A few tears began making their way down Durant's face as he realized that there would be no way for him to end the suffering that he was causing his best friend by simply refusing his sister's demand.

Laksha cast a glance at Durant. His manner was so resolute and assured most of the time that it was upsetting to see tears on his face. They were in over their heads, and Laksha hadn't looked forward to seeing Durant realize it. She felt another pang of guilt for not having intervened to prevent the fight when she'd had the chance. But since she'd settled on the easy option, now it seemed they had no recourse but to see this doomed fight through to its end.
Fortunately, her plan to impede the Muk's vision had worked. The muddy beast was groping this way and that, unable to see through the seeds that riddled his face. Laksha took this as a cue to change her target on the fly. "Lock-On," she issued in a whisper. "But onto the Charizard, please."
Matysa's pupils dilated, and she swiveled to stare up at the Charizard, who was circling overhead without giving the least indication that he noticed her. She blinked twice to let Laksha know she had fixated on his position.
"Bubblebeam, now," Laksha commanded. The Remoraid twitched her fins back, reared up, and let loose a stream of multicolored bubbles that coiled like a strand of DNA as they converged on the orange dragon.
OOC: Two attacks in one post? Well, since Lee might move the plot along at any time, I didn't want to set up the combo and then possibly let it go to waste. Of course, Lee might also decide to let this battle ride out for another round or two.

"You never have any one opponent in a double battle!" Dace snapped back, leaning forwards.
"If it looks like Taraek needs help, then I'm going to help him. And since you're bullying him around with a flippin' Charizard, I think that's fair and right that I help him!" She glanced nervously at the Charizard's flight, looking back to Burmy. She took a few steps back, and turned to face Laksha.
"We switch now," She mouthed, and looked back to the battle.
"Minnow, Tackle! You know who!" The bagworm didn't waste any time, already perceiving the shift in tactics. She bounded sideways, flinging herself into a bounce high into the air. Coiling into a tight ball, she then plummeted into the Muk with a noise like a shovel slapping wet concrete.
Dace winced as a few flecks of purple gunk hit her face, superficial damage from the attack.

"Body slam!" commanded Ophelia. Sludge responded immediately by jumping up and landing on the Burmy before it could react.
Spitfire, who had begun circling the group, let out another stream of flame as the bubbles approached. The dragon-like pokemon gave the Remoraid a look of annoyance and, if it were not for the training Ophelia had given him, Spitfire would be likely to have attacked with such speed that even the agile fish would have had problems dodging.
Meanwhile, Durant was crouched down next to Taraek whispering in his ear. Although still crying, he had regained enough of his composure to continue the fight. When he was done whispering, he and Taraek began inching closer to the fight.
