The pavement of Zone A was still fairly intact, bar the crater from Burmy’s desperation attack, and many scraggly, half-dead weeds. Bits and pieces of leaves and stones, cast off from the earlier contestants, made a sort of pitiful mulch that covered the battlefield sparsely.
The crowd was murmuring rather excitedly about this match… Durant, the only truly inexperienced trainer to make it through the first round, against Max Milen, a man often acknowledged as one of the greatest ever to take up the trainer’s belt? It was the stuff that legends were made of. Many people secretively placed bets on the outcome, being sure to avoid being caught by security cameras. If Durant could find the will to win, he’d be famous overnight, and even if he didn’t, this was still going to be a great fight…

Durant went to the same side of the field he started on, and stood there, smiling the same smile as before, Taraek stood next to him, no longer was he bruised and torn up from the match with Burmy, but he stood there, ready to go with a smile quite similar to that which his trainer had.
"This is going to be awesome Taraek! We're going to go up against some of the best of the best!"
Taraek made a noise that could only be described as a grunt, to show how seriously he was taking it.
Durant bent down and patted him on the head fondly.
"We made it through the first round pal, that's all we came to do. So, have as much fun as you can with this, don't let the thought of victory get to your head. I'm proud of you already."
Durant stood back up and faced the opposite end of the arena, still smiling fiercely, and ready to face his next opponent.

OOC: Hope you don't mind if I take the first attack, and auto your Bulbasaur having taken its starting position as Max makes his entrance.
BIC: Max calmly walked into the arena, only barely recognizing the cheers from the crowd as he approached his position. Already, his mind was focused on the upcoming battle. This was a trainer that Max knew nothing about, except that he was relatively inexperienced and that his Pokemon for this battle was a Bulbasaur, which already stood in the starting position.
Again, I get a battle where I have an advantage by type, he thought. But I will need to be careful. Last round was a good example -- even at a disadvantage in type and strength, a trainer can still make a battle quite difficult.
As this train of thought concluded, Max reached the mark showing where he was to be during the battle. Quickly but deliberately, Max took the Pokeball containing his Delibird from his belt, and dropped it to the ground in front of him. The ball burst open, and emitted the standard brilliant white flash, which quickly resolved into a red, tiny-beaked bird whose tail formed what looked like a burlap bag. Delibird, without even waiting for orders, flapped its wings to bring itself to a position a few yards above the ground, letting out what somehow managed to sound like a combination between a small bird's chirp and an owl's hoot.
Max focused his eyes across the arena at his opponent. "I hope you're ready, friend," he called. "Good luck." With that, he turned his eyes to the referee standing on the sidelines, equidistant from the two trainers, and nodded. The referee returned the nod, and raised the red and green flags that had, for longer than Max could remember, been used to show the decisions. One second passed. Two seconds. The flags dropped, and the referee called out with one word. "Begin!"
Max turned his attention to the center of the arena, where the two Pokemon faced each other. "Let's start strong, Delibird! Ice Beam!" Delibird chirped, then set its eyes intensely on the grassy foe and opened its beak. A moment later, what looked to be a beam of a very light blue, almost white light streaked towards Bulbasaur. Looks could be deceiving, of course; the beam was actually made up of tiny ice crystals, focused into a cylinder maybe a foot in diameter. The apparent light came from the reflections and refractions off of these crystals.

OOC: Nah, not really. And just to warn you I won't always have time to respond in school, so I might be a tad bit slow responding, but I will be able to reply (unless there's some event that I cannot foresee) on Friday during the afternoon through to Sunday at about 6:50 EST)
BIC:"Same drill Taraek! Jump aside and use your vines to dodge the ice beam!" yelled Durant.
Taraek seemed to hesitate as Delibird's ice beam sped towards him, but right before it could hit, he leaped to the side, and then sent out his vines to propel him several feet farther.

"Come on, Durant!" Dace shouted loudly, throwing the seats in front of her into disarray with her wailing. She cupped her hands around her mouth, and gave an indistinct yet triumphant sounding shout.
"Don't lose to him! I'm not going to be the girl-" Dace paused, and inhaled deeply, before resuming. "-That lost to a loser!" Dace jumped back into her seat, knocking over her soda onto the concrete floor. "'ey!" She shouted, snatching for the cup as it tumbled.
"Aw, crud. So much for that." Dace grumbled, and slumped in her seat waiting for the action to begin. Lost a match, lost her soda... Today was just a crummy day for her.

"Ganesh, I'm not a very strong shouter. May I count on you to give Max Milen your support?"
Ganesh flapped his ears in agreement, then immediately gave a loud groaning whine as the Bulbasaur dodged the Delibird's Ice Beam. Laksha laughed. "Well, all right, you can boo the Bulbasaur too, but not very much, please."
She looked back at Dace, retreating in disappointment after spilling her soda, and felt somewhat torn. She'd like to see Max Milen and his Delibird do well, but she could tell how enthusiastic Dace was about seeing her own champion claim the victory. Really Laksha didn't want to turn it into an indirect competition between the two girls -- who was the more worthy loser? -- so she said nothing, only waiting to see what Max Milen's next move would be.

OOC: In-character spectators! Nice!
BIC: Agile little guy, Max thought as the Bulbasaur evaded Delibird's Ice Beam. But if he just plays defense, this battle's gonna be pretty one-sided. "What was that, a Hail Mary?" Max called, in an exaggerated teasing tone.
Apparently, Delibird caught the order within the barb. The delivery bird chirped, and raised one wing into the air. A keen observer might have seen a sea-blue ball of light emerge from the wingtip, rising straight into the air. A moment later, the sun was covered by dark clouds, and the ambient temperature dropped sharply. Max gasped and shivered. Balls of ice, each perhaps the size of a golf ball, began to shower the field.
If anything's going to encourage Durant to take a more aggressive strategy, this is it, thought Max. Delibird's not going to care much about the hail, but that Bulbasaur, on the other hand... Max gave himself a mental slap. Don't get overconfident, Max, he scolded himself. This battle's only just begun, and that Bulbasaur may yet have more tricks up its sleeve. Max returned his focus to the field, and began to consider what his next move would be.

OOC: Yeah, doesn't it just make you feel special?
BIC: Durant looked up into the sky and watched as it started hailing, then back down at Taraek. Taraek was busy leaping around trying to avoid getting hit by the hail, but occasionally failing and leaping directly under one of the falling balls of ice.
"Darn, I really didn't want to use this move, but it looks like it's the only way out. Taraek, use sunny day! We can't allow for any more hail to fall!"
Taraek stood still and concentrated on performing sunny day. A few more pieces of ice hit him, but soon the ice turned into rain, and shortly after that the clouds disappeared. Bright rays of sunshine poured into the arena, and the air around them began to feel very warm, almost tropical.

OOC: Yeesh! Sorry, guys. I'll try not to let this become a habit.
BIC: Well, so much for my little hailstorm, thought Max. But, looks like I may have an opening here. "Aurora Beam!" Delibird chirped, then opened its beak slightly. A ball of light, maybe the size of a tennis ball, appeared in front of Delibird, shimmering in all the colors of the rainbow. A quick point of one of its wings, and the ball expanded into a cone, streaking rapidly through the space between the red delivery bird and its grassy foe. By the time the cold cone reached Delibird's seeded sparring partner, it would be covering a fairly large area, hopefully enough that Bulbasaur's Vine Whip dodge would not be able to get it out of this one.
This battle's just starting, thought Max. Durant may yet have a few tricks up his sleeve. For now, I can press the attack, but I'd better be careful.

"Taraek, counter it and break through their Aurora Beam with Solar Beam!"
Taraek angled the bulb on his back towards the sun, and began drawing in energy. A few moments later Taraek seemed almost to glow with the energy the bulb on his back contained. He turned slightly, and fired the beam right at the center of the Aurora beam. The beams seemed to collide then, the solar beam pushed through it, and sped towards Deliberd. The beam, although no longer shining as brilliantly as it had a moment ago, still glowed brightly as it neared it's target.

Max gasped. He certainly hadn't been expecting this. Not only had the Solarbeam gone head-to-head with Delibird's Aurora Beam, it had pushed through. Only a small portion of the solar power had made it through, but it was enough to make contact with Delibird. The delivery bird squawked fiercely, and without even waiting for an order, pointed one wing at its grassy foe.
What's it doing? thought Max. Before he could even open his mouth, though, it became clear. Chunks of ice and mounds of snow rained down all over the field, seemingly out of nowhere. Of course, thought Max. It's triggered an Avalanche. Looks like a big one, too. Max shivered. Maybe I should have brought my coat.

Ganesh trembled as the Avalanche rumbled across the arena, perhaps out of fear as much as the cold. Laksha's hands fluttered to his leathery side. She knew he had had enough experience with ice and snow for one day.
The Phanpy let out an agitated snort, watching Max Milen's Delibird closely, but relaxed as Laksha pet his back. "Don't worry, we're safe," she murmured.
"It is a wide-reaching move, though," she added, to Dace more than to Ganesh. "That Bulbasaur is surprisingly evasive. Mr. Milen seems to be concentrating on covering as much of the field as possible to keep Taraek from avoiding damage. That's a very good tactic."

"Taraek, use your vine whip to jump out of the way!" Taraek jumped around, and tried to avoid getting hit by the avalanche, but before he could try to use his vines to jump out of the way, a particularly large mound of snow landed right on top of him.
"Taraek, I said it was time to have fun, but I didn't mean to play in the snow! Come on out of there!"
A few moments went by, and then Taraek's head popped out of the snow. "Come on now pal, let's show them that we're not down and out yet!"
Taraek pulled himself out of the snow and stood on it, snow still covered him, and frost was clinging to the bulb on his back.
"Taraek, scratch the last order, it's too late for that, use Leech Seed instead!"
Taraek shook himself slightly, causing some of the snow to fall off, then shot out a small series of seeds at Delibird.

"It might be. I caught him off guard by attacking so directly with my Burmy, but now he's expecting people to come straight at him, and's fighting with that in mind." Dace never thought of herself as the smartest in her age group, but she had picked up quite a bit about battle psychology from her father and her tutor.
Dace watched the avalanche come down, biting her lip, her hopes riding on the green dinosaur being able to tough this out.
"Come on, Tarake!" Dace shouted, obviously unable to fathom how to pronounce its name. "You're stronger than that! Don't let him overwhelm you with a weak attack like that!" She leaned forwards in her seat, continuing to shout. She knew that the avalanche was actually a fairly powerful attack, but calling it weak made it a much less grim situation for the people she was rooting (OOC: Pardon the pun.) for. As the seconds ticked by, Dace clearly grew more and more agitated, until Taraek emerged.
"YEAH!"

Leech Seed? Uh-oh, thought Max. "Icy Wind, quick!" No more than half a second later, Delibird was flapping its wings furiously. A chill breeze, interspersed with numerous tiny ice crystals, gusted towards the seed-bearing foe, carrying the tiny leeching seeds with it. Max could just see that each of the seeds was becoming coated with a thin layer of ice.
That was close, thought Max. If that had made contact, all Durant would have had to do was keep up a good defense, and he probably would have won. I'd better keep my eyes open. So, Durant, what's next?

Several ice crystals hit Taraek, but whatever pain he was put in from them, he seemed to largely ignore. The wind however, while not overly powerful, still managed to push him back. The chill air it brought with it though, left Taraek shaking, and a thin layer of frost could be seen on the bulb on it's back once more.
"You're doing great Taraek, keep it up!" Durant shouted, still smiling.
"Give them a taste of your toxic pal!"
Still shaking, Taraek produced two small, but powerful orbs of pure poison, which sped towards Delibird, they spun around each other, almost linked together, gaining speed by pushing each other onwards

OOC: Oy. Sorry to keep you waiting like this.
BIC: "Substitute, quick!" Delibird closed its eyes briefly. Almost immediately, there was a puff of smoke immediately in front of the crimson Pokemon. The smoke cleared to reveal a small doll, floating between the bird and its seed-bearing foe. A very keen observer might also have seen a sky-blue sphere surrounding the penguin-like Pokemon. The toxic orbs impacted on the Substitute. A clean hit, but since the Substitute itself was not a living thing, it could not be affected by the fearsome poison.
Max wiped a drop of sweat from his brow. That was close, he mused. But Delibird should be well-covered for now. That Bulbasaur hasn't exactly been pouring on the damage, and now I don't have to worry about attacks like Leech Seed and Toxic. Still, it's not over yet. Durant may yet have some tricks up his sleeve.

Laksha winced, remembering how Max Milen's Substitute had interfered with her own strategy. Ganesh, however, was much more of an upfront attacker than the Bulbasaur was turning out to be; Taraek had only used one direct offensive move in the match so far. This Substitute was liable to last much longer than the one against Ganesh had, unless Durant Larks opted to pursue a more linear approach.
"I have to say, both of these trainers have a better mind for tactics than I do," Laksha commented to Dace, while Ganesh sniffed the air, apparently to clarify that the doll was not alive.

"I don't know... If he can't get close, it could be bad," Dace looked into the bottom of her cup, counting the icecubes left after her earlier mishap.
"Delibird beat you guys because it was flying, and you weren't, right?" She asked watching the battle. "Durant is having the same problem, even though he has more ranged attacks. He can't just fight like he fought me..." Dace grumbled, setting her cup down again and resting her head in her hands. If he can't get close in, he's going to lose...
"Come ON!" Dace said forcefully, her voice hushed but clear. "BEAT[/] him!"

"Delibird, Blizzard!" It was time for the most powerful Ice attack that Delibird was capable of. Delibird seemed to crow a bit as it spread its wings. A moment later, the bird was flapping furiously. A harsh, cold wind, interspersed with ice crystals and snow, gusted over the field. Most of the leaves that had been launched at Delibird became encased in ice and fell to the ground. The occasional leaf made it through and impacted on the Substitute, though even they had little force left to them by then.
Max couldn't see the Substitute, not with all of the ice and snow. If he had, he would have noticed that it appeared completely intact, with not even the finest of cracks. Still, even without seeing that, Max could tell that the Bulbasaur's Razor Leaf attack hadn't been able to do much. Bulbasaur might just be out of his league, Max thought. Between the Substitute, positioning, and the type advantage, Durant doesn't have a lot of options. Still, I'd better keep an eye out. There may yet be a way for Durant to overcome the disadvantage.
