The only light in Viridian Forest that night was from the moon. Long shadows would dance along the ground with every passing cloud. The only sound was from the wind slowly rustling through the trees. A few small animals were out and about, scurrying along the ground, foraging for food. One such animal was a young rabbit. It quietly hopped along, stopping at each patch of grass it came to for a quick snack. On the way to the next patch, something caused the rabbit to halt. The wind had stopped entirely. Even the clouds were now still. Animals all across the forest had forgotten what they were doing and began listening to the silence.
Crack!
A bolt of energy erupted out of the ground and formed into a ball just a few feet above the ground. The rabbit bolted toward the nearest bush and disappeared inside. Animals scurried as quickly as they could to get away. The wind picked back up, blowing much harder than it had before. Energy continued to erupt from the ground and into the orb, which was now growing in size with each new bolt.
Instability had begun to take hold of the ball as it grew. Bolts of energy erupted out of the orb, destroying trees and sending dirt and debris into the now-raging wind. Energy constantly poured from the small hole in the ground up into the orb, which was now the size of a car.
Finally the orb became so charged with energy that it erupted in all directions. Trees were uprooted and tossed like nothing, chunks of ground and rock flew every which way, and all that was left in the orb's place was a thin sheet of energy floating just inches off the ground. It stood as high as a movie screen and about as long.
Energy burned along the edges as if in a violent reaction. To look at the sheet itself was like looking into another room through a window. But instead of seeing the rest of the dark forest on the other side, a bright snow filled tundra with a raging battle in the middle greeted anyone who looked through it. There was an army of strange, almost orcish looking creatures brandishing archaic weapons running toward six figures near the energy sheet.
The closest was kneeling right next to the sheet of energy on the other side, fiddling with a machine on the ground. The other five were farther away and placed directly between the army and the energy field. Three of them looked human, though one had a large pair of angelic wings. The fourth was on all fours and had a large plant growing on its back. The last of the five was almost cat-like, except it floated a few feet off the ground; it was the smallest and had a long tail.
“Dad! It's on!” the closest one to the energy sheet yelled. “It just needs a few more minutes before it will be stable enough for us to pass through!”
The humanoid with the angelic wings called back, “Good job Rick! Now get back here and help us buy some time.”
Rick nodded and left the machine running. He joined the five others, taking a place between his father, Sly, and the creature with the flower on its back, Venusaur. To Sly’s left was the floating cat, Mew, and to Venusaur’s right were the two other humanoids, Ally and Jeff.
When the army was close enough, Sly and Mew took to the air. Rick, Ally, and Jeff pulled out their weapons and rushed headfirst into the throng. This left Venusaur, who began absorbing sunlight into the plant on its back.
High in the air the two fliers could see the almost infinite number of the army. Toward the back of the main attack force were more high tech beam weapons which the enemy promptly began firing at Sly and Mew. The two kicked into evasive action. Mew teleported here and there, casting down balls of psionic energy when he could get the chance. Sly, on the other hand, would dive down into the fray and plow through the enemy, knocking them into each other’s weapons. With Sly and Mew distracting the long-range weapons, that left the other four to take out the ground forces.
Jeff swung his battle-axes every which way the enemy presented itself to him. When one of the orcs grabbed him from behind it got a nasty surprise as Jeff erupted into a swirling mass of electricity. The orc was sent flying back, dead.
Ally managed to fight her way to Jeff and the two began fighting back to back. With the chips in their heads, courtesy of illegal experiments done by the military, each of the two knew what the other was about to do. Ally would duck as Jeff rotated at the hip, swing around in a circle, slicing as many as he could in the stomach. She would come back up and dig her sais into the chest of the closest orc.
For every orc they killed, three more seemed to take its place. Ally pocketed her sais, and Jeff did the same. She reached back and grabbed his arm; immediately he dipped her around and began to swing her in circles. Ally’s feet ignited in flame as she kicked the first orc in the face and continued through the rest.
They couldn’t continue to fight using conventional weapons. Without speaking a word the two nodded and Jeff threw Ally into a crowd of orcs. Her hair ignited into a ball of flame as she soared through the air. When she landed columns of flame spewed from her hands as she torched any orc near her. Jeff charged himself with electricity and began lobbing orbs of lightning into the enemy.
Rick swung his sword, decapitating another orc. He, unlike the two elementals Ally and Jeff, was a mage. The frozen, burnt, electrocuted, and diced corpses around him were a testament to how far he had come over the years. At one time he had barely been able to defend himself -- but now, after all he had endured through the years, he had finally reached a level few mages ever had. He threw orbs of ice that would freeze body parts or whole bodies depending on where they landed. Balls of fire would explode incinerating all who were caught in the flame. Bolts of electricity would rain down from the clear sky to electrocute the enemy. None of these orcs here could stand in his way.
Venusaur was the farthest back and tasked with the job of protecting the portal. That was the army’s main purpose -- to secure the portal and take the machine able to create it. Beams of intense sunlight turned bodies to ash, razor-sharp leaves would gut an enemy in seconds, and when the orcs came close enough, vines would strangle them before throwing them into other orcs. There was an axe sticking out of Venusaur's left side and a spiked club embedded in its right shoulder: both were lucky hits. The snow around the creature was dyed a dark purple now but still he continued to fight on.
Stray beam shots would occasionally pass Venusaur and rebound off the portal with a strange hiss. One such shot didn’t hiss or rebound but made an almost splashing noise as it entered the portal and exited into the Viridian Forest. Venusaur threw the orc it had been strangling to the side and turned to look at the portal. It was ready.
The pokemon quickly turned back to the battle. Rick was the closest. “Vena, Vena! Saur!” the pokemon shouted. Rick looked back and nodded. He formed a ball of black energy in his hands and threw it up into the air. It was like a magical firecracker exploding in the sky.
“That’s our cue Mew!” Sly shouted as he and Mew began their retreat towards the portal.
<Something’s wrong,> Ally thought to Jeff as she rejoined him and the two began fighting their way back to the portal. <The enemy is retreating the way they came.>
Sure enough, the throngs of orcs were completely ignoring their enemy and were running back.
Rick felt the ground begin to tremble. He and Venusaur were the only two still facing the enemy. Something large was coming over the top of the horizon. Rick’s eyes widened when he realized what it was. It was the largest airship he had ever seen. Ally and Jeff were still too far away. The ship would easily overtake them before they reached the portal. If Rick could get to them in time he would be able to cast a shield around them and protect them on the way back to the portal.
“Venusaur! Use Hyper Beams on that ship!” Rick yelled as he started sprinting towards Ally and Jeff. Venusaur positioned itself and began collecting energy in its mouth. When enough had collected the pokemon let loose a destructive beam of energy that tore through the belly of the ship.
Sly saw the beam and turned around in the air to see where it was headed. He had never seen a ship so large before; at least two or three dome ships could fit in this one easily. Several panels opened up on the front of the ship to reveal hundreds of beam cannons. Before Sly could warn Mew, the cannons opened fire. Sly was forced to dive.
Mew was not so lucky. Several beams struck the Pokemon in the back, nearly killing it. The small creature plummeted toward the ground, unconscious. Sly fumbled for its Pokeball. He recalled it just before it struck the ground. “You’ll be safe in here until we get back home.”
Sly was about to pocket the ball when he heard a horrible crackling roar. A larger panel had opened underneath the nose of the craft and a much larger device had been revealed, a plasma cannon. Sly looked at the ground where it was pointed. He was horrified; Ally and Jeff were its targets. Another barrage of beam cannons caused Sly to retreat lower to the ground. He just hoped he could make it in time.
Rick could see that Ally had pulled far ahead of Jeff, who had stopped to kill a few more orcs. When Rick finally noticed the ball of plasma energy bearing down behind them, he couldn’t do anything but watch.
Jeff was hit directly. His body was ripped and torn to shreds.
The resulting explosion was powerful enough that it threw Rick almost as far back as Venusaur. He quickly scrambled to his feet, taking in what had just happened. Jeff was dead, he had watched his body get ripped apart by the explosion, but where was Ally? There -- her hand was sticking up out of the snow. He ran over to her and pulled her out. He cradled her in his arms.
“Ally! Come on, wake up!” Rick could feel something thick and warm on the back of her head. He pulled his hand back and saw it was covered in blood, Ally’s blood. Her body slowly slid out of his hands.
The sadness that gripped his body over the loss of his friends was nothing compared to the anger and hatred that immediately took hold. He stood up and faced the ship. The cannons had retracted and now smaller attack vessels were beginning to fly forth from the craft. Before Rick could go on the attack again, Sly was next to him, holding him back.
“No Rick! They will pay, but not today. We have to escape while we can. We--”
Another explosion hit nearby, sending Rick and Sly flying through the air. Rick was flipped head over heels, but he could see that he was heading towards the portal. There was a rush of what felt like cold water as he passed through it and landed hard in Viridian Forest.
“No...!” was all he could manage. The portal was only one-way. He was unable to help Sly and Venusaur. He pressed up against the hard transparent surface of the portal, looking for Sly. When he found him, a sob raised up in Rick’s throat.
Sly was dragging himself along by his hands. Both his wings and lower body had been severed. Nearby was Venusaur, sprawled out motionless along the snow. The army was returning now and heading for Sly.
Rick beat against the portal. “No! Stay away from him! You bastards!”
The orcs surrounded Sly and began to mutilate his body.
Rick slumped down against the portal. “No… Stop...”
One of the orcs ran up to the edge of the portal and knelt down by the machine. Rick stared at the creature with such hatred. He watched as it pulled the machine from the ground, ripping the wires out of the back. The portal flickered and was sucked back up into the small hole in the ground.
With the portal no longer there, everything in the forest slowly returned to normal. Rick fell back against the ground on something hard. He reached behind about to throw it when he realized what it was. It was Mew's Pokeball.
Rick held it close to him. He couldn't handle everything that had just happened. Tears began to flow down Ricks face. Tears that had built up every time a comrade was lost and only now were finally released.
OOC- That took a long time to write damn it… well hopefully it’s a good re-entrance into the RP… I need to get ready for work.
