So lately I've been playing MechWarrior4 again, partially because I started reading one of my old BattleTech books, and I decided to do a search on material related to Mech4. This search brings about a review of a Clan Mech Pack, as well as "MechWarrior 5 Trouble Brewing?". Well, once I see this I instantly become curious and decide to investigate.
It turns out to be a short article on Harmony Gold USA issuing a Cease and Desist order to IGN regarding images that they used. (I'm assuming that they received them from Piranha, who's developing the game)
Well it's guaranteed that there will be a long stream of comments, but I'm disappointed that they're almost all "Robotech sucks! Let them make the game!" or "They hardly look similar at all, Harmony Gold is just being pissheads!"
Well, I'm sure most of you are wondering why I'm calling attention to this, whenever you have somn like this pop up there's bound to be a bunch of morons saying stupid stuff.
My point is more-so to call it to attention for those of you that don't know about it, and also complain about there stupidity, cause when I was 5-6 years old I could tell that MechWarrior was using a bunch of designs from the Robotech universe (which is another common complaint, that it's a different universe. So they don't see the problem with it which, if I'm not mistaken, is actually the real problem.)
Also, none of these guys mentioned that the Marauder was based on the Officer's Pod in the Macross Saga. I haven't finished reading it yet, so there's a chance they could show that they remember it, but still..... (Also I think the Rifleman was ripped off of somn from the Macross Saga, though I could be mistaken about that one... It's been awhile.)

At least you guys get your knockoff designs in the states... SRT, because it went the licensing route, is damned to Japan exclusivity.

Which is a bummer
(Also, one person FINALLY mentioned that the Marauder, as well as the Hammer are total ripoffs.)
It's just a pissing thing of fans damning Harmony Gold for protecting their stuff. I'd like to see the Marauder and a few others get put back into MechWarrior too, but I'm not going to get pissy about them being removed because of a lawsuit from back in 96 (which most of these people seem to be ignoring. MechWarrior 5 may take place before those games, but that doesn't erase the fact that the lawsuit exists and they stopped using the material.)

"On September 7, 2007, the Hollywood Reporter stated that Warner Bros. had acquired the film rights to Robotech and would be producing a live-action film with an as-yet-unknown release date.[7] Tobey Maguire is producing the film through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is pursuing the lead role in what the studio plans on being a tentpole sci-fi franchise."
I'd be more concerned with this, really.
Now that I think about it, if they're pushing for a movie, that may be why they're so touchy at the moment. Protecting product identity and such. I remember a few other things that got modified substantially to avoid product identity clashes (Namely some DC comics characters that had name changes, and some Transformers naming/design issues).

Personally, with Robotech, I am more concerned about the movie. I'll be quite peeved if they screw it up.

Wait what's the issue? The OP takes a lot of words to explain something simple, but I can't figure out what that simple issue is.

Basically that the fans are getting really stupid over a small legal battle between Piranha and Harmony Gold. They seem to think it means no MechWarrior 5, when that's not the issue at all.

Who is Piranha and who is Harmony Gold and why should I care?

And what's MechWarrior? And what's Robotech? And who's BloodWolf7?

...... I stated that Piranha was developing a game in the first paragraph. But here, I'll try again.
IGN, a multimedia website who's primary focus is on video games and reviewing them, was issued a cease and desist order by Harmony Gold, who holds licenses and copyrights for Robotech (which is an altered version of Japan's "Macross".)
The order came shortly after IGN placed pictures given to them by Piranha (the company developing MechWarrior 5) on their website. These pictures featured the mech "Warhammer", who's original design was the Tomahawk Destroid, one of the many mecha featured in Robotech.
In 1996 Harmony Gold filed a lawsuit against the FASA Corporation (the original creator's of the BattleTech universe and the MechWarrior games) when they used several of their mecha designs, which were obtained by a third party, without Harmony Gold's permission. After "MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat" came out, FASA agreed to stop using these mech designs, one of which was the Warhammer.
Although there supposedly was some modifications, Harmony Gold still filed suit. This has led to the MechWarrior community to rise up and curse Harmony Gold, essentially telling them that they need to get over the usage of their images and mecha, especially since nearly all mecha designs are stolen from other companies. Many of these members also ignored that many of the mecha used by FASA (and Piranha, who's game was to reuse the old designs) were exact replicas. Most are merely concerned with whether or not this means that the game will see the light of day.
Is that better?

So basically this is about intellectual property and gamers getting all uppity?
And you did not state Piranha was developing a game anywhere.
But otherwise, yeah, that's better.

That contains the Warhammer which, from what I can tell, is still pretty much the same as it was back in MechWarrior 2 (except for a new level of awesomeness added to the graphics). That's the Tomahawk Destroid. There are a few big differences here, but I think Harmony Gold does have a point.
